Very thought provoking, in depth research into the methods, history and current schools of thought in Feminist Studies. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in what Feminist Studies are all about. It is very well written and while it is an excellent introduction for someone new to the field, it goes in depth enough to provide food for thought for those with a feminist study background.

A GUIDED TOUR BY A POSTDISCIPLINARY GUIDE

That is how Nina Lykke describes and positions herself: A feminist guide. By doing this, she avoids the dilemma of choosing between the god-trick or postmodern relativist positions. She is neither. She tackles further with her positioning so you know that it is a major concern for her while writing feminist texts. I loved the idea of having an imaginary interview with herself at the beginning of the book, exposing the author's position further and arguing that she is a feminist studies scholar and this is actually possible in today's world. It gives me hope in my own positioning(s) for the future because I too am a feminist studies scholar with a BA in English Literature and MA & PhD & Post-Doc in Women & Gender Studies Departments. Feminist Studies have been my breathing and academically breeding zone.

The news regarding the good old relationship between gender and sex is that the separation between these two is really over. This is one important argument to take with you. Sex and gender are intertwined or "inextricably woven together" (25) as expressed in the book so separate definitions are bound to be incomplete and they feed binaries. The cluster of prefixes (multi-, inter-, trans- and so on) in feminist studies are not there to confuse you. Lykke distinguishes them carefully but clarifies them too. Speaking of clarification, I need to underline that the glossary at the end of the book is a gem. I wish more of the academic and theoretical texts on the market had such a glossary! Maybe it should become a required criterion. If you think I am exaggerating, here is my imaginary experiment. Assign the book to your students for one term without the glossary and next term with its glossary, and then check the differences in class discussions or simply in feedback forms regarding the reading material. It makes a difference if you have definitions for 45 terms and phrases used in the book.

Another tricky binary that Lykke rejects is the one between ontology and epistemology. Building on Barad's theory which refuses the separation and suggests creative terms such as episteme-onto-logy or onto-epistem-ology, Lykke contributes to dismantling this binary when it comes to feminist philosophy. Consequently, her approach suggests a transformation of science and knowledge production and revises Harding's three strands of epistemology, which Lykke adds a 4th strand, that is, feminist postconstructionism.

Lykke introduces Feminist Studies (F.S.) as both an established and non-traditional discipline which she refers to as "postdisciplinary discipline" as opposed to "successor discipline" in the sense that Griffin and Hanmer used. Although she makes it very clear that the "post" in her discussion does not mean "after" it can still be a bit confusing due to one's own deeply-wired perceptions of the word "post," at least for me. It is almost like assigning a new meaning to the word "red"! I just cannot help it. "Post" in her context is in reference to a "double stance" and once you get the hang of it (and Lykke provides a neatly expressed list for it, see pages 18-19) then you can proceed into a more comfortable reading.
I do have some sections which I favor to the others such as "theorizing intersectionalities" and "shifting boundaries between academic and creative writing practices" simply due to personal interest. For the first one, "theorizing intersectionalities" I appreciate the fact that Lykke draws attention to the fact that intersectionality has a long history and not just a recent "fad" in F.S. referring to feminists such as Sojourner Truth and Alexandra Kollontai. Distinguishing between the three clusters of intersectionality (explicit, implicit and under other names) is very important in order to show the "diversity and richness of feminist reflections on intersectionalities" (68).

In addition to Lykke's own conversation with herself, I felt that the book itself can be read as conversation with many other feminist scholars such as Butler, Haraway, Braidotti, Barad, and Mohanty among many others. In this sense, reading this book will take the reader to an enlightening spatial and temporal tour (nicely fitting Lykke's position of a guide) in the universe of feminist theories. Thus, yes, it can be an introductory text for the new comers, but it is also a review and mental workout for the ones who are familiar with all these prominent names. Speaking for myself only, again, I never hide the fact that my memory needs to be refreshed and challenged on regular basis when it comes to contemporary feminist theories. There are way too many terms and texts on the market which scholars refer to, criticize, and (even worse!) redefine constantly. This is why we need books like Nina Lykke's. After your reading is done, your memory is not only refreshed but also it enjoys new contributions to and novel dimensions of thinking as a feminist.

Feminist Studies is a welcoming book in the sense that its readers can be from a wide range of places. However, I would claim that the book is written for the trinity of `others' (175), that is, Woman, Native, and Nature. As a reviewer and reader, I am more than happy to be included in Lykke's trinity and share my enthusiasm about the book with the potential readers.

I recently purchased a Celestron StarSeeker telescope (basically a NexStar80) so wanted to read more about computerized telescopes. Michael Covington's book is very good. He starts by saying "Welcome to amateur astronomy". The first part of the book then goes on to discuss telescopes in general, such as the different types (ie, refractors, reflectors and catadioptric) and much very helpful general information about observational astronomy. Things like celestial coordinates, how a telescope works, etc. Too much to put in this review but I found the information extremely helpful. The second section is about astrophotography including simple ways to do astrophotography without a lot of expensive equipment. This author also has a book on Astrophotography which I haven't read. He refers to it several times in this section of this book. The last section describes in quite a bit of detail the operation of 3 computerized telescopes, the Meade LX200, Celestron NexStar 5 and 8 and two Meade telescopes with Autostar, the ETX 90 and the LX 90. All of these telescopes are now outdated as both Meade and Celestron have newer models. However, what is said in this section would apply to the newer models to a large extent. Overall I enjoyed reading this book and obtained a lot of useful information and recommendations to start my budding career in amateur photography. One further note; there is another book by Michael Swanson that deals with just the Celestron NexStar telescopes. I have this book also but haven't finished reading it. If you are just interested in computerized telescopes in general, I would recommend the one in this review. If you have or are interested in a Celestron, then I would suggest the Michael Swanson book; actually I would recommend both.

This book is a useful supplement to Harrington's Stare Ware. I does cover a few topics in distinct and useful ways. Buy Harrington first, though and read it through.

If you have a goto scope it's very useful. I have a Celestron NexStar goto telescope, and have bought a book specific to NexStar scopes, and I still found this one helpful, especially on alighment.

It was quite complex, & enjoying at the same time.....I have a Meade that IS computerized !.

Learning about Telescopes, this is a great first time /review of things you for got and thing you just didn't know how book.very helpful.

Another excellent book by Ms. Gerritsen. I am reading the Rizzoli/Isles books in order and I can't wait to read the next one!Great storyline with twists and turns and an excellent job of revealing Maura's background. I really like the way that Ms. Gerritsen reveals more and more of the background of both Rizzoli and Isles and the way it is entwined with the storyline. Very few authors can do this successfully and Ms. Gerritsen does it with ease.The book keeps your interest from the first page to the last and leaves you with a wow! feeling. Thriller writing doesn't get much better than this. I will definitely recommend this book to others. They won't be disappointed!

Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander may have brought the TV version to life, but there is only one Tess Gerritsen who made it all happen. Confession, I read the first book way back when in which Rizzoli was portrayed, so it was hard for me to get into the television series because Angie Harmon, gorgeous as she is, was not Rizzoli in my mind. (Maybe she'll grow on me -- she's a fantastic actress). However, if you haven't read the books you're missing something special; Ms. Gerritsen goes so deep in her books that no television script writer can touch the depth of her writing and expertise. If you're a reader, you have to read these books for suspense, technical, police procedural and medical expertise, because Ms. Gerritsen's books have them all.Body Double tells Maura Isles's story, It's so complex and heart breaking that you canNOT fall in love with this character. Rizzoli, too, is the consummate friend and cop and you will lumber along with this pregnant cop and worry for her throughout this book based on what is occurring in the storyline.Talk about making your characters suffer, Tess Gerritsen is a pro. Her red herrings, her twists and turns will have you holding your breath and staying up much too late to finish. What's more the ending, if no one spoils it for you, will have you thinking, I never saw that coming....If I have one criticism (and honestly I have one!) is that Gerritsen writes so deep in Rizzoli and Isles's heads that she doesn't need all the ... Rizzoli thought or Maura thought in her books. She writes in hardcore deep and personal point of view of each of these characters and we get it. The thoughts are distancing and remind me I'm reading, while without them, I would have been 100 percent drawn in.Otherwise, this is a near perfect book and I highly, highly recommend.

I am reading these in order as written so this is the third I have read thus far.Unlike the first two (the Surgeon and the Apprentice) the reader isn’t dropped into the story in “run mode”… it took a few chapters to get into the story which then flowed gently through its twists and turns meaning there was no problem putting it down but then there was no problem picking it back up again… at least until the last part of the story when everything links up and you have that page turning sensation and need to find out what happens next.Isles’s character gets a bit more dimension - we discover some secrets of her past, she gets a potentially romantic story sideline – the story more leans towards having a “romantic” label than “thriller” even Rizzoli gets dominated by affairs of the heart for most of the book.That said it was still a good read - a nice little twist in the end that in hindsight you saw coming - in no way did the change of pace from the previous books diminished my enthusiasm for the series, in fact I am even more curious to see how these characters will develop in their next adventure.

This Rizzoli and Isles novel starts with a discovery of a dead nun and an injured nun in a cloistered community in Boston. The deviations from the case into the lives of estranged medical examiner Isles and pregnant detective Rizzoli seem distracting from the plot, but at lease there turns out to be a connection between Isles' returned husband and the case. The crime is connected to the slaughter of a village of lepers in India and a charitable world medical group. The killing of the young nun is solved, but as I write this, I can't recall who did it. This was not the best of this author's works.

I didn't guess exactly whodunit, but I was in the ballpark. The denouement/climax was done pretty well. No cliffhanger, no funny stuff, for which I am always very grateful. For some reason I couldn't really care much about the main characters. The plot is complicated enough and there are some red herrings that were well done, although parts seem contrived to me. But I'm not so sure I will continue reading the series. This was #4, I think.

Maura Isles returns to Boston from a conference in Paris to find her home surrounded by police. She approaches Jane Rozzili and is unnerved by the shocked stares of everyone. Why are they looking at her like that? In a car parked in front of her house is a dead woman and as Dr. Isles looks at her she finds herself staring at her own corpse. The victim turns out to be a twin sister the adopted Maura never knew she had. Her search for her real identity leads her to a bleak house in Maine filled with a dark and horrifying secret. This book was a suspenseful and creepy page turner leading to an ending I never saw coming. Don't miss this one!
