"When There Was No Money" is a superb story, delightful reading AND a valuable education in microfinance and poverty reduction strategies.

I would encourage all types of people to read this book, from the general reader looking for an interesting story to curl up with, to the economist charged with improving a national economy. The lessons to be learned from this book and history are remarkable.

The history walks you through the literal time in Cambodian history (not that long ago) when there was no money, no national currency because it had been eradicated as something evil under a terrible regime. Acleda Bank has grown to be a highly successful commercial financial institution, and this book walks you vividly through that dangerous and exhilarating journey.

Kudos to Acleda Bank, and kudos to Heather Clark for providing us with this story.

Clark has written a remarkable story of modern microfinance. The evolution of ACLEDA is a lucid demonstration of the past, present and future thinking on microfinance worldwide from a more charitable exercise stigmatising microentrepreneurs as "the poor" to a businesslike venture that is focused on delivering competative financial services to the same customer base. Clearly a victory for the micro-entrepreneurs in Cambodia.

The newest version of Word is a major break from the past versions. Many of the tabs and buttons I've become used to seeing are now either gone or placed in a different place. I bought this book to guide me through the program, but was disappointed. First, the book assumes the reader has never used a word processor before, so it goes into very elementary usage. Second, it doesn't point out how the new version differs from what I'm used to (and still use at work). Third, when I consulted the index for specific features of the new program, I often couldn't find what I was looking for. If you're a novice to computing and word processing, this book may be helpful. If you're even the least bit experienced (and who isn't these days?) I would advise that you shop around for a different book.

I've got three different "For Dummies" Books currently, including the old Word 2007 for Dummies, the Windows 7 for Dummies and now Word 2010 for Dummies. Since computer manufacturers haven't provided manuals for their computers for some time, they are invaluable. The only problem I ran into so far with Word 2010 for Dummies was there was no instruction on how to Delete a File that I could find. Usually that is on the drop drop menu for File, but not on Word 2010. I went to Windows 7 for Dummies and found the answer there. It is a Windows Function I guess instead of Word, which is where you would expect it to be as it has been in the past. It involves right clicking something, which I never would have guessed. I use the for Dummies books as quick references with the index and, if necessary, the chapter headings. Never read one clear through.

I ordered the hard copy of this rather than the download so I could flip pages back and forth easily. The down load has its advantages, too. You can easily search the computer version for your particular problem/question, but it takes I little more effort to search the book's index. The book is well-written and the technical jargon is easy to follow. Would recommend for anyone wishing to hone their WORD processing skills.

The constant referring to other sections and other pages makes it too much exercise when in a hurry to find the exact trick for doing something common. Just bumbling your way along using Word 10 is much easier than using this book because there is way too much verbiage on every topic before you get to the meat of your question. It's gathering dust on my bookshelf, with tons of dog-eared pages I wish I hadn't wasted my time reading. There's a good tip on each dog-eared page, but no good way of organizing the tips.

Word 2010 For Dummies is loaded with an incredible amount of information and guidance for beginners, on up. Step by step instructions are given for all Word applications and will help solve most issues when using Word 2010 processing. I did find some discrepancies with a few of the instructions and illustrations, but that may be due to the fact that I am only using the version that comes with Windows 7 and not the full Microsoft Word that must be purchased extra.As with most of the other "Dummies" books, this one is no different and is sure to be a great help to those of us less educated in the world of word processing. After Word went through the interface transition and I turned on my new computer, if I hadn't ordered this volume in advance, I would have been totally lost. It made everything so easy. I was back up and running in a weekend. The author has a sense of humor that was entertaining along the way. But it's also great if you are just starting out. Everything is taught as if you just learned how to turn on the computer. It goes way past the basics if you wantinto macros...

I have used the Dummies for Word book since the mid-90's as I not only needed to use the Word programs, but trained new employees in its use. Having started my word processing using the original Word; then Word for Windows; then Word 95, 98, 03, 03 and Word 2007, all I can say is if your office productivity relies on a great word processing program, keep your old Word program. The book is great and very factual, but the Word 2010 program is not an up-grade. It's one complicated mess.

This is a very comprehensive manual for using MS Word. Such works are most useful as a resource to use when you need it.Unfortunately, like most of its kin, it lacks a really comprehensive index. The more comprehensive a reference is, the moreimportant is the index. To be most useful, I would like to see almost 10 index references for every page of text.

This Kindle edition English translation version of 'The Papyrus of Ani' by E.A. Wallis Budge does not include the mythological account in Egyptian hieroglyphs as the printed version of the same author does, which I also own. I would like to see in the future a Kindle edition fo the 'Papyrus of Ani' (Book of the Dead) that includes the Egyptian hieroglyphs and their English translation, transcription and transliteration as related by E.A. Wallis Budge. It is however a good travel companion for reading on my Kindle application of my laptop because I previously had expensive books that were too bulky or suffered damage and loss.

This book has a very steep learning curve, as the author tends to use hieroglyphs in the notes too. An all around excellent book for devoted students of egyptology. It is readable, but plan on doing a little research of your own.

Well, it's not a hard read, but the fascination comes from the glimps it gives into the heart of this ancient and intriguing culture. It takes a bit of intentional reading but it's worth it. You will not regret adding this book to your thoughts.

Loaded with historical facts. Fine print. If you are a history buff you would like it.

If a book advertises "illustrated" I expect to see more than a few thumbnails.

I like this book because I am seriously into Egyptian theories. I couldn't give it a five star though because it is difficult reading and I believe only for the very serious reader. I equate it to our Christian Bible. Some thing to be read in small bites and continually to fully absorb the information. I will continue to read it throughout my life.

Excellent Introduction to Christianity

A well written, probing examination of, and introduction to, the Faith. The concepts Mr. Macleod introduces are superb, as well as his sympathetic pastoral approach. His focus was soteriology and the understanding of Grace, all in the Reformed tradition. This being said, I did read only the first edition, and so cannot quite speak for the second. But I can understand why a 2nd was produced: the first was only somewhat over 100 pages in length! So recommended, and good for the beginner, yet easily advanced enough for the intermediate in Biblical understanding.

About the Author

Walter Reich is a Senior Scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars. A psychiatrist, he is former director of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum and was a Senior Research Psychiatrist at the National Institute of Mental Health.

dated but educational and not a difficult read

This book was written before the huge surge in interest in terrorism in the United States brought on by 9/11. Since so much has been written since 1998, to read this book alone would leave the reader a bit behind the times on the subject. Nevertheless, I would recommend anyone interested in the topic starting here.

The parts dealing with the psychology of terror are quite relevant - how do terrorists justify to themselves what they do and how can engaging in terrorist acts alter the views of those who commit them? How do the defenders of terrorism in the name of religion get around prohibitions on suicide? If ever there were a vivid description of rationalization, you'll find it in the account of the views of a Lebanese cleric that adapt to the level of enthusiasm of the public, the judgments of peers and the effectiveness of terror. Success can do much to muffle opposition just as in conventional warfare techniques that were formerly abhorred can find favor if they prove useful. Who would have thought the President of the United States would scarcely hide his approval of torture (while denying it, of course).

You'll find a good historical summary of the Weathermen in the United States, the Bader/Meinhof Gang in Germany and the IRA in Northern Ireland providing evidence of how terror acts on the population in general as well as those who plan and carry out the acts. Did terror do what it is hoped that it would do?

The book is not a difficult read but it is not a casual read either. You'll need to concentrate to follow the points of the several authors and keep their ideas in mind as you move from one to the next. If you do, you'll find broad coverage that approaches the subject from many angles and reaches back in time to the first century AD.

I'm keeping my copy as a good reference on the subject.

Interesting and attempted balance

Origins of Terrorism attempts to both be balanced and discuss the psychologies of terrorists. The chapter by Martha Crenshaw (I recommend reading her book on terrorism rather than just the chapter) presents the opposing view to the chapter by Post. While interesting, the psychology advanced is mostly the "crazy terrorist" psychology. I didn't get much out of the book, except for the first two chapters and chapter 10. Chapter 10, which discusses terrorist motivations, is incredibly useful. The rest of the book is average but unremarkable.

This book presents to its readers a clear foundation of the factors that lie behind the use of violence by groups, states, and/or individuals to gain their objectives.
The two primary articles in the book by Martha Crenshaw and Jerrold Post present two opposing views of the logic that lies behind political violent activity ("terrorists" activity). The case studies in the rest of the book support these two primary articles.
Any researcher in the field of political violence studies must have this book in their library.

A Brilliant Book

This is, at least in my opinion, Gleeson's best book, although JUDO FOR THE WEST and ALL ABOUT JUDO are two of the books that changed the way judo people think about the subject. JUDO INSIDE OUT is not an easy read. It stretches the boundries of accepted judo thought. When it was written, it was a breakthrough book and not one that was readily accepted by the judo community.
This book examines the sociology of judo and how judo has changed the culture it has touched. Gleeson's writings spawned a number of people who have taught his views on judo skills, judo coaching and the fundamental nature of how we think about judo.
If you want another book on how to perform routine judo techniques, this is not the book for you. But if you want a book that will make you examine the purpose and nature of judo and its role in society, then this book is an important one to read.

After reading this book I concluded that you better not be a dummy if you have diabetes. It's one complicated disease. This book went a long way toward helping me understand diabetes. It convinced me that an iron will, regular habits,and a penchant for routine and and detail, are the keys to living with diabetes successfully. Should you be deficient in any of the qualities listed above, good luck. You shall need it.

This is a good book for reviewing and it has updated information that inspired me to try harder and count carbs. My mother found this book and loved it she said she had no idea that there was so much involved in being a type 1 diabetic. I became a diabetic before I was 21. It was not diagnosed until a month after I turned 21. I am 55 now and all I can say is I have to keep reading and reading and I still won't know everything I need to know. This book is easy to read and it is not only good for the diabetic himself but for the family to read and then maybe they will not be so judgmental...

The thing I liked most about this book was that I never once got bored. It's very well written. My four year old granddaughter was recently diagnosed with T1DM and celiac, so I wanted to learn as much as possible quickly. This book covers everything.

My boyfriend has type 1. It really explains the WHY and HOW really well. Explains why highs/ lows in blood sugars are bad. I like to know "why" so if there ever was an emergency I could help him. I have also learned what's best to cook and make him for lunch. If you buy this grab your highlighters and sticky tabs. It will really help. My best friend had twins two years ago. Her body basically gave her Type 1. Which is rare at 32 years old. Type 1 is normally hereditary and starts before age 10. So she has had to change her life and learn. I sent her this book. She is really thankful for all the help. Especially understanding about carbs and how they affect your sugars. This book is excellent and if your child was recently diagnosed I 100% recommend this book. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is BC the few recipes are not very diabetic friendly unless you weigh 100 pounds and are not a man or woman. Haha.

I am recently in a relationship with someone with Type 1. This book really helped me get quickly up to speed so I can support. It is also an easy read as they keep these serious subjects entertaining.

Very helpful to understand this disease. My grandson was just diagnosed with Type 1 and we wanted to know everything.
