Development of the Krag Jorgensen Rifle

This is an excellent book covering the development of not only the Krag Jorgensen rifle in US service, but also of its peers and competitors in the US Army's selection process for the rifle and carbine prior to the Spanish-American War. The book also gives good coverage of the development of the 30/40 Krag cartridge (30 US) as well as a review of the development of the smokeless powder that propelled the Krag's projectiles.

This is not a book that delves into the minutia of the design, but one that paints a broad stroke to give a very good overall picture of the Krag Jorgensen. For the intimate details of the design, Joe Poyer's "The American Krag Rifle and Carbine" is more to the point. For those of us that want to know about the politics, the technology of the late 1800s leading to smokeless powder firearms, the various military boards selecting military firearms and the rifle's use in the field, then this is the book for you. The author has a very articulate and readable style of writing that conveys his knowledge in a very readable manner.

Very well written and extreemly interesting.

This book not only contains a great history of the development of the Krag rifle but it also includes relevant history of cartage development, ballistics and the testing and reasoning of the rifle board responsible for choosing the Krag. It was well written and extremely interesting. I'll be looking for more books from this author.

The story line was awesome and just attention grabbing

This was a very well written book. The story line was awesome and just attention grabbing. I will be sharing with my reading circle. Nice easy read and makes for a warm cozy feel. When I first started reading them I wasn't sure but now I am in love with them. I love this book with great story lines and can't put them down once I start reading them. The main characters were very awesome. It is entertaining and well thought-of. It is very easy to read and to understand. A great read for everyone. .

The author of this book is brilliant and I have read some of her books before. As usual this book is amazing and the story line of this book is awesome. Inside of this book I have found a hot and steamy alpha billionaire romance story.
The main character of this story is Ritz and her eyes caught the sight of a handsome boy. Inside of this story I have found some twists also. The situation goes exciting when Ritz came to know that the handsome man is alpha billionaire. She decided to stay with him. Actually, I like to read romance story and by reading this story I am pleased.

What a book, very in-testifying story. There are scenes after scenes. Both Ryan and Ritz's point of view. Amazing short story to read and would have continued to read if it didn't stop at 40 pages, in-fact i wish it continued as the final part RYAN IS A MURDERER really made the story double the intensity. I would tell the Author Anna Collins, a very good job done as you truly have written and inspirational and romantic story.

Not What I was Looking For

I was very disappointed with this book. What parent/child doesn't know about hitting balloons around? Playing Follow the Leader? Or putting babies on their stomachs to strengthen their bodies since they are supposed to be sleeping on their backs all the time. Or putting objects ahead of them to encourage moving toward the toy? It is filled with what I feel is common knowledge--health risks of inactivity, kids' organized sports pros & cons, "motor milestones" for infants. I was looking for some creative ideas for small children, especially ideas on keeping active during the winter and bad weather. I was expecting many suggestions on simple, inexpensive ideas for active play, ratings of active play equipment, suggestions for some toys good for active play (beyond hoola hoops, balls, etc.). I didn't gain one good new idea from reading the whole book. But, I was glad to see the much hated Dodge Ball is now banned in many schools!

Required Reading for all Parents and Child Care Givers!

Finally! An instruction manual for children's physical fitness: kid's sports/obesity/TV watching/baby gym classes - it's all in here, for ages 0 - 8.
Your Active Child is a great book for all parents - regardless of how active (or inactive) your children are. Kudos to Rae Pica (the author): She knows how to write a book that busy parents can actually read and use.
As the parent of two children, I would highly recommend that every parent (and every health care professional, teacher, or child caregiver) read this book - and then buy it for 10 of their closest friends and colleagues. It's that good, that informative, that important.
This book is easy to read and offers practical, realistic, FUN suggestions for getting your kids moving in the right ways.
One of the things that struck me was that parents like me, who think they're doing everything right with respect to exercise may, in fact, be doing some things that are very destructive in the long term.
As parents, we all have the very best intentions, but let's face it: children just don't come with instruction manuals. With respect to understanding what kinds and amounts of physical activity are right for kids, Your Active Child is about as close as I've seen.
The book is chock full of startling statistics and research about the effects, physical, cognitive, and emotional, that too little or too much activity can have on children. But more importantly, Your Active Child points out some great ways to engage your kids and get them off the couch, and make physical activity a fun, normal part of their everyday lives.
Bet you didn't know that too much activity could be bad for kids. Neither did I, until I read this book. But as the author, Rae Pica, points out, some parents are taking things too far in the other direction - and with disastrous results.
But Your Active Child is more than just a bunch of scary stats. What I really liked about this book was that it broke things down by age (from newborn to age eight) and gave really solid information about what was developmentally appropriate for that age. It also gave some great advice and ideas within each age group for introducing healthy activity levels into your children's lives.
Again: important topic, good book. Get it, read it cover to cover, and lend it to or buy it for your friends with kids. And their teachers. And their doctors!

A Dream Come True

This book is a "must read" for the parents of young children. Having been a part of the coaching staff and the Board of Directors of a traditional youth sport program, I witnessed a lot that put my stomach in knots. I have spent several years since then reading professional journals and academic texts to help me to understand how to provide for a child's intrinsic interest in movement, play and sport without all of the negative outcomes that come with overzealous youth sport programs. I often wished that others would do some of the reading with me, but parents of young children have other demands on their time. Finally a book has appeared that is full of sound science and practical application. And, it is written for parents, not researchers and academics, even though I know this will be a welcome addition to their library as well. Although it may take hours of reading in professional journals and textbooks to realize just how valuable this book is, I'm here to tell you that I wish I had a book like this one when I started my serious reading in this area. The author provides numerous citations to reputable web sites, organizations, and other written resources for further exploration if you want or need more information on a specific topic. I am particularly impressed with the author's position that more is not always better. There are dangers to overscheduling our children. Thus, it is even more important that we as parents carefully evaluate the programs in which we do place our children. I now realize the importance of child-directed play and the time that needs to be allowed for all of the rich learning that comes with it. Your Active Child is a book you will want to read and keep handy as a reference as your child develops throughout childhood.

A book for the beginner and a review for the experienced

This is the first book I purchased for flow cytometry after checking out 3 unsatisfactory books on the same subject from the library. I am a clinician by training and so I needed a book that explains the basic background of the method, PLUS detailed procedures to follow, and explanation on how to alter those procedures to suit one's experiment. This book is written and presented in a way that makes it easy to understand even if one has no prior trianing in flow-cytometry. It does not have so much technical jargon that a newbie would not be able to understand. Everything is clear and well-explained. I have "debugged" some of my current procedures using this book. Chapter 3 (Immunofluroescence: Basic Considerations) is a must-read: the validity of one's results seem to largely depend on factors discussed in this chapter. Included also is a list of internet resouce for cytometry, although some of websites have been outdated. Overall a very nice reference, but as in all lab procedures-related books, one book never covers everything you need to know, so I use this book by Radbruch in conjuction with others.

I want to preface this by saying I’m not a business or financial expert by any stretch of the imagination.I have worked for 20 years at a small business and seen pretty much every side of that business. I also work at a university with an entrepreneurial major that is incredibly popular. I can certainly see the appeal of owning your own business.Generally my rule in dealing with almost anything is if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is. This book promises to teach you how to buy a business, put a year into it building it up, and then withdraw to work 5-10 hours per week while making $100,000 or more per year.To me it really sounds too good to be true.As I said I do work for a university so I am a big proponent of higher education. The author proudly states several times that he took no classes beyond high school which does not necessarily fill me with confidence. I would also say that the author, who is a business broker, strongly pushes the idea that anyone buying a business needs a broker. In fact that is the very first thing the author suggests in the chapter about additional resources. My other criticism is that it does seem to contradict itself in a few places, such as the suggestion that you must be deeply invested and interested in the business and also more than willing to give it up if it is not profitable.That said I don’t think it would hurt anyone that is considering investing in a business to read this book. There is a wealth of advice in this book, especially in looking at financials and choosing the correct business. Since I’m not an expert I’m not qualified to tell you how useful this information is, but at a glance it seemed useful to me.Since they offer the promise of working only five hours per week as a business owner the book also gives advice on hiring a manager to handle the day-to-day work after a year or more building the business.So if you have large amount of money to invest (something else the author strongly encourages) and are looking to buy a business I think this book could have some good advice for you. I’m a little skeptical that it will have you working ten hours per week and making $200,000/year.

This book is very similar to Robert Kiyosaki's style of writing. If you liked Robert Kiyosaki's book "The Business of the 21st Century" which details network marketing and how this is the business of the future. In that book he outlines how network marketing can change your life and why it is the best type of business in the world. However, the one thing he doesn't do that this book does do is give you a bit more insight as to how to execute. Now I'm not going to say this is the Holy Grail as to how to live your life, make money and then create wealthy, and it isn't by far an overnight process, (Anyone that tells you that is selling you a lie, or delusional) however, this book will point you in the right direction and help you establish the mental framework around which you should be using to get to the life that you want.

As a small business owner, I found this book quite informative and helpful. I had never heard of a lifestyle business owner before, but the concepts make total sense. Running the business rather than letting it run you is important in my mind because why would anyone want to go from working a normal 40 hour a week job to an 80 hour a week job for less pay.I was skeptical at first about the author’s advice to buy an existing business especially since I felt that it would be hard to find a company that could fit one’s ideal preferences. However, he convinced me of the soundness of that advice. I hadn’t really thought about how much time, effort, and money is spent just getting the business off the ground. Why go through all that hassle if other opportunities are available to fulfill your plans?!I enjoyed the fact that the author provided specific examples to reinforce his points and I found this book a great read. I will definitely be referring back to this book as I grow my business and look for other opportunities to expand.

I’m not sure that the opening chapters goals of a $100,000 annual income for 5 hours of work per week is likely, but he does accurately point out that work for someone else will never get to that level, so why not try? And this book has a lot of helpful information for anyone looking to try. With detailed profit & loss charts and clear examples, this is an educational book for all small business owners. Not every chapter will be applicable to every business, of course, but information about successful marketing and successful teambuilding can help all businesses and bosses.The goal in this book is to build a successful business and then step back from it, letting your smart decisions and early hard work pay off over a long time, instead of working forty or more hours to keep the business going. That’s the goal of the lifestyle business owner.

In this day and age it is hard for any millennial to move out and live on their own with this rough economy. However, if you have an entrepreneurial spirit and are dedicated and determined to make your business prosper I certainly recommend reading this book. Aaron Muller offers beyond practical advice for any business owner whether its a start up company or long time owned and franchised company to help make it prosper. I especially appreciated the advice provided in chapter 6 entitled getting into the right line of business and chapter 8 entitled increasing revenues through smart marketing. Overall, if you are just starting out with your business or currently struggling financially this book will help change your viewpoint and thinking. Highly recommend.

I read the Reviewer's comments and appreciate his overall positive review. However, I feel it is necessary to clarify misconceptions regarding the basic physics material which is presented in the review.
The conservation equations that are presented do not mean a quantity such as heat is always conserved. As discussed in the text, there are sources and sinks of heat in the conservation of equation of heat that is presented. A conservation equation for motion is also just as appropriate as writing a conservation equation for momentum. We can write a conservation equation for any quantity, such as a trace gas (e.g. CO2). Source/sink terms can be accounted for in this mathematical framework.
The equations in the book are specifically written for the atmosphere, which is treated as an ideal gas. This is why the qualification is added in the text that the equations are for the atmosphere (and specifically the earth's atmosphere). The equations developed in the book from the first principle of thermodynamics are only appropriate for the earth's atmosphere, since the ideal gas equation for air is used.
The basic phyics text in Chapters 2 and 3 have been extensively reviewed by numerous students and others and has been found to be solidly based in fundamental concepts. The Reviewer did correctly find a typo in that the virtual temperature is greater than the actual temperature whenever water vapor is present. The inequality on page 8 was reversed but the text and the explanation in that paragraph are correct and should be clear to a reader.
Finally, I thank the reviewer for taking the time to complete the review. If there is a third Edition, I certainly will acknowledge that review.

Yes, but . . .

(Revised after reviewer took course in etiquette). "Mesoscale Meteorological Modeling" is the new second edition of the flagship text in the field. It is reasonably priced and seems to be well organized, addressing a lot of important problems. Aside from the discussion of thermodynamics, Professor Pielke's book is lucid and coherent.
To make a more specific criticism, consider section 2.2,entitled "Conservation of Heat." For a start I might complain that heat is not something conserved in atmospheric processes. In the usual thermodynamic usage, heat means energy transferred through thermal processes, is not an exact differential, and is not conserved. I think he means conservation of energy, but why not say so? It gets worse before it gets better. To quote from the first paragraph: "The first law of thermodynamics for the atmosphere states that differential changes in heat content, dQ, are equal to the sum of the work performed by an object, dW, and differential changes in internal energy, dI."
The first law of thermodynamics is universal - applying equally to steam engines (in which context it was first identified) and black holes. The phrase "differential changes in heat content" is nonsensical, since heat is energy transferred, not "contained" energy. The word differential is not only vague but also unnecessary. It would have been more accurate to say that the heat transferred into a system is equal to the sum of the work performed by the system and the increase in the internal energy of the system.
On page 8, he says that the virtual temperature is less than or equal to the sensible temperature, but the opposite is in fact true. On the same page, I found his attempt to discuss perfect differentials confused and confusing. There is both a mathematical and a physical point involved here. The (thermodynamically interesting) perfect differentials are the total differentials of state variables. dQ is not such an exact differential, and that is why it is meaningless to talk about conservation of heat.
Another unfortunate line is "Internal forces are required to account for the dissipation of momentum by molecular motions." (page 16). This is misleading. Momentum is conserved - absolutely - and unlike energy is not usually converted ("dissipated") to a more inconspicuous form, like internal energy. The atmosphere can transfer momentum to other parts of itself, by pressure or friction, to the ocean or the solid Earth (again by friction) or even (in microscopic amounts, by tidal forces) to the sun and moon, but these should be considered external forces. I infer from the succeeding sentences that conversion of energy from one form to another was the point.

I could quibble about the fact that he confuses centripetal and centrifugal acceleration (page 14) or the fact that he for some obscure reason refers to conservation of momentum as "Conservation of Motion," but that might be excessively picky.
Despite this type of flaw, I think the book is potentially useful. Perhaps one should just skip the thermodynamics (and read about it some good elementary physics book, like Sears) and just read the part he apparently cares about - the modeling. Apparently this is as good as it gets on the subject of mesoscale modeling. In any case, I don't begrudge the money I spent on it - I learned some useful things about modeling coordinates in Chapter 6.

As a child Oxnam worried about how the fractured Humpty-Dumpty could be fixed. This nursery rhyme later became a metaphor for his "fractured mind." Oxnam was outwardly a successful China scholar and president of the Asia Society. Inwardly, however, he struggled with self-doubt and inadequacy, blackouts and alcoholism. He sought treatment from psychiatrist Jeffrey Smith, who, during a session in 1990, found that Oxnam's problem was not alcoholism but multiple personality disorder when Tommy, an angry boy, emerged as the first of Oxnam's alternate personalities. Eventually, 11 personalities emerged, including Baby, who had suffered from severe child abuse. Through therapy, Oxnam was able to put most of the pieces of his personalities together (three remain). In an epilogue, psychiatrist Smith writes that while the disorder is serious and therapy is demanding, the results are usually good. Although the conversations the 11 personalities have with Smith are at times difficult to follow, this touching and powerful account of the "inner world" of the disorder—the power struggles and dialogues among the fractured parts of a person's mind—provides valuable insight into a courageous man's struggle.

*Starred Review* Sybil, of course, and a handful of others have achieved a measure of public recognition as a result of books chronicling their lives with MPD--multiple personality disorder, known in clinical circles as DID, dissociative identity disorder. Unlike the others, Asia specialist and public speaker Oxnam achieved public distinction, to say nothing of an impressive list of professional accomplishments, despite the at-times crippling burden of MPD, manifested by no fewer than 10 additional, distinct personalities, or "alters," of himself. Sometimes he was in charge; sometimes not. He was often relegated to the role of hapless passenger as one or another alter drove all of them down a path of profligate eating and drinking, temper tantrums, or adultery. Oxnam doesn't shirk responsibility, but with a father who tolerated nothing short of scholastic, indeed overall, perfection and a drama-queen mother, it seems inevitable that Oxnam developed some sort of mental instability. But add gross physical and sexual abuse at the hands of trusted family members into the mixture of childhood experiences, and there is little remarkable in the fact that this child's mind broke into the walled divisions within what the adult Oxnam calls the Castle, home to his inner selves. Helped me understand; courageous; realistic

This really helped me understand my friend who has this disorder (Dissociative Identity Disorder, DID). It's amazing how much the author was able to accomplish in life before he even realized he had a disorder. He's courageously honest in telling about, and taking responsibility for, the harm he caused. I also appreciate that this doesn't have one of those "and now everything's totally fine" endings -- this one is more realistic, making clear that things can improve *and* one can cope with ongoing mental-health issues.

By the way, to anyone who has heard that this isn't a real disorder: while it's true that some incompetent therapists influenced some patients to believe they had multiple personalities when they really didn't, that in no way means that there aren't people really suffering from this. Skepticism is healthy and valuable, but it must be balanced with open mindedness.

Powerful and amazing read

I recommend this book for anyone interested in Dissociative Identity Disorder, Professionals, or people who live with the disorder. Dr. Oxnam's book has stood the test of time because he has managed to write a book that tells his story of his multiple selves from their perspectives without confusing the reader. Allowing a glimpse into what it is like to realize you have DID, the process of therapy, and healing. Amazing book. Thank you, Dr. Oxnam.
