No, there are neither drunken sailors nor scheming Spahis in this book. But like Conrad and Kipling, Kristeva is a foreigner (born in Bulgaria) who has embraced her adoptive country (France) to the point of completely erasing every trace of her homeland. Of course one of her points is to fight the notion of homeland as a positive, yet she has no problem assigning "supranational" virtues to France. She calls herself a "cosmopolitan" -hard to believe when the word France appears many times on each page and there's just one minimal reference to Bulgaria (the editor's prologue says more about her upbringing than the entire book). Besides that, the book is a classic exercise on French style abstraction -Kristeva has an idea (more like a personal opinion) and presents it without any attempt at proof or reality check, as a self evident truth. The method turns overly grotesque in her eulogy of De Gaulle -which does not make any sense and does not even try to make it, it is just a song of love from a woman who got her French visa from his administration.

The book is designed for human romance stories.

I thought this a great help particularly in understanding the back story. The author is user friendly and encourages the writer every step of the way. I review it as a three star in relation to the wealth of books out there that are longer and more complex in their material. However I have no hesitation in recommending this to the budding author. I ordered this book based strictly upon the synopsis provided by its product page on Amazon. It sounded like an intriguing and highly original work and was fairly presented in that regard.The narrator, Veronika, is one of four "girls" that inhabit a remote island with two adults (Robbert and Irene) that act as their caretakers and instructors. The girls are identical in every respect except hair color. They live a highly regimented life, constantly instructed by their caretakers with a focus on perception and awareness of surroundings. We know from the start that we are dealing with a very unusual situation, as the author drops little hints that eventually lead us to an understanding of the nature of the girls and their relationship with Robbert and Irene.The story increases in complexity with the arrival of a shipwreck victim, a girl named May, who is quite different from the other girls. The interaction between May and Veronika and the intervention (both anticipated and realized) of the outside world form the basis of the remainder of the work.This novella is easily read in about three hours. While it is highly unusual, and maintained my interest, I must say that for long stretches of the story, very little if anything happens. Much time is spent describing and analyzing very mundane situations and natural occurrences as seen through innocent and naïve eyes. Were this story much longer, it would soon become quite boring and pedantic. I have seen the book described as a great "middle" in search of a beginning and end, and I cannot disagree. Perhaps a prequel and sequel are on the horizon. If so, I'm not sure I'm a customer.

I loved this book. I should say first off, I'm an adult reader, a novelist myself (have published a couple YA books as well as two more clearly directed at an adult readership). This novel is subtle and complex, more like Kazuo Ishiguro's NEVER LET ME GO than like THE HUNGER GAMES - I think some of the negative reviews here have to do with thwarted expectations. Beautifully written, haunting, memorable - it reminded me a little of John Christopher's novels, which I loved as a child. Highly recommended.

I really enjoy Dahlquist and this latest book is no exception. It was an easy read and very cleverly thought out. The characters were real enough to be likeable and the plot, although it appears on the surface to be shallow, is actually pretty thought provoking and give just enough of a hint of deeper meaning to make you think about it long after the last page is complete. Although I don't think one is forthcoming, I would love to see a sequel for this.

Reading about how the girls thought and learned was fun and really made me think. I definitely recommend buying it. I tried the free demo and was hooked.

No real development or story and climax or drama.. I forced myself to finish it but hands down the worst book I've ever read.

The Different Girl is well different. I'm not a big fan of sci fi, but the premise of this book really intrigued me. The first 50 pages of the book are a bit difficult to get through, but that's because you are given a look into the day in and day out life of the characters in the story.The Different Girl centers around four identical androids who have different colored hair to differentiate between them. They are looked after by their caretakers Robbert and Irene. The androids are Veronika, Caroline, Isobel, and Eleanor. The story is told from Veronika's point of view. And I must say it is interesting to read a book from an android's point of view. Especially when the android believes that they are human, and their lives are normal. Now unfortunately for the reader, we never find out what the purpose of the androids were. We never find out why or even how they were created. This was a major letdown.This book is probably not really for your average young adult reader, and I'm not even sure it's for your average sci fi fan. There is a mix between sci fi and contemporary, and personally I don't think it worked out very well for this novel. I think that it gives a good message about friendship, and accepting people for their differences.My favorite part of the book was Veronika's interactions with May. May is a human girl who found herself on the island that the androids were on after her ship was wrecked. May's reactions to the androids were probably what your average person's would be. First there was fear, then anger, then a mild curiosity, and finally acceptance. It was very entertaining to see her relationship with Veronika evolve.I think I can see what the author was trying to do with the story because there were elements of mystery, and there was a build up. What really kept me going was the story seemed to be leading up to this big reveal, to find out exactly what was going on with the androids. But unfortunately there was nothing. Excellent source of information. Well organized book with maps for each section. Fold out maps on each cover with a pull-out in back are all very helpful. It came in especially handy while planning the trip but was also useful while there. Small enough to fit in your jacket or bag.

My colleague and I were able to spend an extra couple days in London during a business trip, and we ordered this at the VERY last minute. Thanks to Amazon for getting it to us shortly before our flight left... and thanks to Eyewitness for helping make our trip EASY! The book includes Top 10 lists for each area of London, as well as things like "Top 10 Kid-friendly Activities", "Top 10 Free Activities," etc. We referred to this guide constantly! And, as always, Eyewitness has beautiful pictures and a very concise design.

He doesn't believe in telling clients at his weight-loss clinic in Manhattan when they can or can't eat. Some of them are celebrities and corporate executives with such busy lives that mealtimes are often unpredictable. So Dr. Shapiro reassures them that a calorie is a calorie, whether you eat it before or after 9 p.m. He helps them lose weight by showing them different foods, set side by side, and how the seemingly healthier choice might actually be equal to or greater in calories than a bunch of foods that would seem to be off-limits to someone trying to lose weight. In Picture Perfect Weight Loss, he uses photos of foods to demonstrate these choices. Thus, a "healthy" carob bar is shown to be equal in calories to 10 scoops of Italian ices. A 10-ounce loaf of crusty bread is shown to be equal to a tiny dish of Chex Mix. Two ounces of reduced-fat cheese are shown to be equal in calories and fat grams to two ounces of salami. The photos pit all types of snacks and many meal choices against each other, and account for sugar, salt, and starch cravings. The text--easy to read even when discussing scientific principles that scientists don't fully understand yet--covers everything from exercise to nutrition labels to menus from some of the world's top restaurants, with the healthiest food choices highlighted. Regular dieters, though, might want to skip all that until they've read the appendix explaining why the most popular fad diets--from the Atkins diet to Suzanne Somers's--are unhealthy, overly restrictive, or just based on misunderstood science. A New York-based physician specializing in weight control, Shapiro will no doubt startle many lifelong dieters and experts with his approach to eating. There are no "correct" portions and there are no bad foods. Instead, he insists that people must become aware of what they're consuming. To illustrate this principle, the book is filled with color photographs of different foods. For example, one page shows a handful of mixed nuts, potato chips and vegetable crisps: these three portions have 400 calories each, but 10 cups of popcorn has the same number of calories as the rest. A one-cup serving of Quaker Natural Cereal has 540 calories, but that same number of calories is found in 16 low-cal Fudgsicles. Shapiro uses real-life examples of people with weight problems and includes practical advice, albeit in brief chapters, on exercise and the psychological reasons why people become overweight. However, the power of this book is clearly the illustrations showing the "right" and "wrong" food choices. Shapiro walks readers through ethnic menus (Chinese, Greek, etc.), explaining which choices make the most sense healthwise. The most awesome things about this book is the pictures. I heard thousands of times that eating certain things would add up to a lot less calories. I could even read the calorie content on labels. Doesn't mean I ever put together in my head what that really meant though.This puts it together for you. It shows two pictures of different food setups. Each pair of images will have listed below them how many calories that setup covers. So say if would show me a picture of one food that was five hundred calories and then a entire list of foods that would total five hundred calories.Really worth the look. I think.

The picture comparisons of food are very vague and misleading. The calorie counts on many items are not accurate is one example. The author doesn't take into consideration as to how the food is prepared such as baked, steamed, broiled, or fry, which greatly affects the calorie count.Dr. Shapiro also doesn't take into account of a person's metabolism or dietary restrictions. Finally, the binding on the hard cover is cheaply done causing the pages to fall out under normal use. Finally, use the book as motivation to do your own investigating to discover what works best for you.

I have been looking for exactly the information in this book for some time. I seem to be constantly eating, yet constantly hungry. I also avoid diet fads, because I'm very active and am afraid that diets will harm my performance in my favorite sports. When I feel hungry, I get tired, cranky, and can even get almost dizzy. That's why I eat constantly!However, this book showed me what to eat so I feel full but reduce my overall calories. Since I began using Dr. Shapiro's program, I feel better and have control of my appetite. My athletic performance has not faltered. And I lost weight.I only have one problem with this book. Many of the examples are excellent. For example, if you have a sweet tooth and love ice cream, the pictures show you that you can eat many more popsicles than ice cream for the same calories. That's great for people who have a sweet tooth. However, the book is almost entirely lacking in good substitutes for people like me who crave cheese and dairy.

I bought this book for the photos, and the photos are impactful. Nothing in the text was illuminating - in fact, it was so simplistic it was almost patronizing. However, the message in the photos was very very powerful. To actually see photo after photo in the "poor choice" column of things like croissants, scones, muffins, steak, cheese; and seeing photo after photo in the "good choice" column of vegetables, fruit, vegetables, fish, vegetables, beans, vegetables, etc. sends the message in a very clear way. We all know that we should eat more vegetables and less butter, but we don't always remember. To actually SEE the choices sends the message on a different level. Which, after all, is the whole point of this book. And the bottom line is, I see those pictures now every time I make a food choice and I'm eating much healthier!

As the title says: A picture dictionary! This the the way to set your brain with what exactly you need to eat in order to feel your stomach full in a healthy way.At the beginning you will find many reasons of what people do incorrectly and the doctor perspective. Useful at all if you need to convince yourself or other person about what you or they are consuming and find a better choice. Highly recommended!

If you tend to "see" everything and that's how you learn then this book is for you. It can be eye-opening to some people to recognize exactly what a normal food portion is, and how many calories can be in certain foods. I like the visual approach and it does help one to change the way they think about portions. The other information is basically what you find other places, keeping a diet log, making a diet plan etc. But what sets this book apart is the pictures. So, if you aren't a visual learner I doubt this book will do much for you.

If you are a visual learner like I am, "Dr. Shapiro's Picture Perfect Weight Loss" and Dr. Shapiro's Picture Perfect Weight Loss 30 Day Plan can really help you to become more aware of the relative caloric density of different foods. I've tried many diets in the past during which weight came off, usually through self-denial, but then came right back after reaching my goal and eating "normally" again. Often, even more pounds piled on afterwards, a sure sign my body wasn't about to risk starvation again. I've followed Dr. Shapiro's books for only a month now and have already lost over 12 pounds without any feeling of sacrifice at all and I haven't even increased my physical activity yet. As he states in the first book, Dr. Shapiro does not want you to think of this as a diet but as "food awareness training." While I don't care for the resulting acronym, I have to say that this visual learning method has worked beautifully for me. I use my newfound knowledge at home as well as in restaurants and have no trouble making choices that are great for me. While no food is "forbidden" on this plan, I now know how to balance my caloric intake for little "indulgences" and am still losing weight. Best of all, I believe I have finally found a way of eating that I can live healthily with for the rest of my life. Thank you, Dr. Shapiro! Would that there were more books this Picture Perfect!!!

Having seen the Good Morning America coverage of this diet, I was hopeful but skeptical. After buying the book, losing 55 pounds, regaining my lost energy, and amazing my friends and relatives, I'm a major advocate of this approach and of Dr. Shapiro's common sense advice.As someone who travels the world, attends endless food-related events, and has very little time for exercise, I was really in trouble...with little hope of overcoming my lifelong weight problem. This book was really my last best hope of a permanent change. It worked. And it was so easy and comfortable, I can't believe that more people have not discovered it.My friends take one look at me and demand to know how I did it! It's a pleasure to share this life-changing book.

From the Author
At 16 I played in a punk rock band and lived rock and roll. Then after decades of seeking the truth, living in communes, I visited Asia Minor, Turkey, to attend a writers retreat. As soon as I got off that plane I felt�I was�home, in a way that I had never�experienced before. I didn't finish my novel, because I fell in love with this incredible country and its people. I went back to Scotland, but soon realised that my time was finished there, and�so I�emigrated, I was pulled back, destiny was truly calling... Some two years later I arrived at the shore of the Aegean with one bag and no idea of what to do... Within a few weeks I came to know the mother of my son who was born two years later... I had many exhibitions of my art, played Mevlavi music in street concerts, recorded albums... Then I became seriously ill and I was confined to my home for a year, and�just knew that I was being stopped in my tracks, incarcerated, so to speak, so that I could write this book; 'Seeds of Future Worlds'. I had to finally, 'Know Thy Self', to truly�live a �Spiritual life, to know my soul and be true to it. My book of short stories and poems is published here, 'Sui Generis', and I am currently working on�my next book, 'Musicians of Thought' about Reincarnation, inspired by the works of Rudolf Steiner.

About the Author
I live on the coast of the Aegean on the ancient site of Myndos, Anatolia, a mystery centre once home to the temple of Prometheus. I live as an artist, a poet, muscian, scholar and writer. It is as if I have lived many lives in this one incarnation. My five year old son is the light of my life. Born in London, travelled the world in love.

Be inspired!

What an interesting and inspiring book, full of challenging ideas and clearly well researched. This is a spiritual book that really delves deeply into the subjects covered within the pages, but it does so, not in an intellectual over bearing way so common in this genre, but through imagination and poetry, fluidly written so that you feel embraced by the words and the author. Wonderful quotes throughout, from Goethe, Novalis, Rumi, Rudolf Steiner and many others that all help to bring the subjects to life and illustrate the themes.

In order to understand Tibetan religion, this thesis isolates the ritual of gcod (pronounced ch�d) as a pillar of Tibetan cultural ingenuity for three main reasons. First, gcod developed during a critical period of cultural development in Tibet (tenth-thirteenth centuries); it epitomizes a renaissance formation of high culture. Second, studying gcod reveals the variety of soteriological, cosmological, and ritual influences that lead to a definitive Tibetan religion. Finally, the study of gcod yields important insights into the Tibetan religious economy that is the stage on which ritual and soteriological competition play out. While keeping these broader concerns in mind, gcod will be discussed in four chapters. In the first, the historical and cosmological contexts for gcod are discussed. In the second chapter, gcod’s fit into Buddhist soteriology will be described and affirmed. Third, the role of gcod in Tibetan local religion will be discussed along with descriptions of the gcod pa’s professional competitors. Finally, the gcod ritual proper will be described in as much detail as possible. In addition, both the introduction and the conclusion discuss possible avenues for gcod in ritual discourse (within religious studies). With these investigations in mind, this project will proceed to argue that the heart of all these innovations and syntheses is their this-worldly focus, which is generally true for Tibetan religion. The reason why gcod perpetuated is because it was instrumental in solving mundane problems, not because of the profundity of its doctrinal content.

About the Author
Johann Christian Friedrich Holderlin (1770- 1843) was a major German lyric poet. His work bridges the Classical and Romantic schools. Holderlin was a solitary figure, and suffered bouts of mental illness throughout his life. Jeremy Adler is Emeritus Professor of German and Senior Research Fellow at King's College London. He is a sometime fellow of the Institute of Advanced Study, Berlin, and a Corresponding Member of the German Academy of Language and Literature. He has written a book on Goethe's Elective Affinities (1987), produced a catalogue of visual poetry, Text als Figur (third edition, 1990), and edited the collected works of August Stramm (1990). With Richard Fardon he edited Franz Baermann Steiner's Selected Writings (1999), and also edited Steiner's collected poems (2000) and selected aphorisms (2009). His edition of Holderlin's Selected Poems and Fragments was published by Penguin (1998), as was his illustrated life of Franz Kafka (2001). Charlie Louth was born in 1969 in Bristol. He is a Fellow of the Queen's College, Oxford, where he lectures in German. He is the author of Holderlin and the Dynamics of Translation (1998).

At Last: the letters in translation

This is a very welcome adddition to Holderlin in English. This edition appears to be a Penguin Classic sold in England and Canada but not available for general sale in US bookstores. Hopefully Penguin will issue a US edition.

This edition consists of a 6 page chronology, a 50 page critical introduction, 223 pages devoted to 120 letters (314 survive), all of Holderlin's essays (excepting 5 early pieces from school and university) including the Pindar Fragments, The Oldest Programme for a System of German idealism, 48 pages of notes, and biographical notes on his correspondants.

The letters are translated by Charlie Louth and the essays by Jeremy Adler. I am grateful to just have the translations and will let reviewers more expert in German comment on how well they were done.

My only regret is that the editors did not include the letters to Holderlin from the love of his life Susette Gontard. Although this would have deviated from their intent to publish only Holderlin's letters, these would have made a welcome addition (they have been translated separately by David Farrell Krell). There are, however, letters from Holderlin to Susette.

For those readers looking for a complete German edition of Holderlin, I highly recommend the 3000 page Leseausgabe (12 paperback volumes in a slipcase: ISBN 978-3630620633 ) published by Luchterhand and available from Amazon sellers. It is the Frankfurter Ausgabe edited by D.E. Sattler without the staggering critical apparatus.

BRILLIANT BOOK - INVALUABLE ADDITION TO MY LIBRARY

Brilliant essays and letters by Holderlin, with a marvelous introduction. Very impressed.

I had never read so many of Holderlin's letters and essays in one book, and was convinced -- yet again -- that he is one of the pivotal thinkers and poets of the last 500 years. His influence on our times is huge, since everyone from Rilke to Hegel learned from him.

A Glimpse into H�lderlin's Mystical Isolation

The letters of poets, writers and composers can definitely do more than just shine a light on the world of a gifted soul. Keats' letters are read not only for their biographical depth but also because of their beauty.

Friedrich H�lderlin, a German contemporary of the tragic English Romantic has written some equally excellent letters. In fact, the letters are more interesting, philosophical and fascinating that the essays. Where the letters are more informative and provide an excellent backdrop to the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the essays feel more like the after thoughts and supplementary notes of such German idealist philosophers as Schelling and Hegel. They are quite cryptic at times and while being fragmented, can certainly shed a light on the poets lyrical work (as well as Hyperion). Nonetheless, the essays are perhaps better suited for research purposes, being published no doubt to appeal to scholars and German literature students.

Returning to the letters, I was deeply surprised how easy they were to read and at times joyful. Though H�lderlin suffered through his failed romance, and there is as much woe and grief as there is joy, the poet is so full of life and dignity. I found the letters very strong in character and kindness. He was a deeply sensitive soul and perhaps this lead to his break down.

So much of H�lderlin's life and work is unappreciated in translation. For those willing to explore a giant of German literature, this book (again, with focus on the letters) a wonderful compliment to his lyrical work.

If you know some angularjs already, this book will be perfect in applying and explaining key angularjs concepts while building a real world project.
I absolutely love the book, but keep in mind that I already went through pro angularjs, and a couple other angularjs books.
