great text, poor book production

this is a very good text. well written and useful. i'm just getting a little tired of paying a hundred bucks a pop for books that start to fall apart soon after i get them. in the case of the gabbard book, the binding holding the pages together was truly cheap and coming apart. just cheap production. i'm less concerned if the sideboards are on the less than totally solid and reliable side of production but don't produce a book and charge a hundred bucks for it and have the binding start to split at the first reading. really insulting to the buyer and the author. i'm sure apa could afford to forgo an additional ten cents per book and actually have their contracted book manufacturer use glue in the binding.

Loaded with facts about the NWO in a very readable 'novel'.

I'm in agreement with all other reviews. In Popsicle Man, the author skillfully blends fact and fiction to incorporate everything you need to know about the 200 year old Khazar-Ashkenazim-Jewish Zionists NWO conspiracy to take over the world. I'm not being facetious because I have been studying this conspiracy for more than 30 years and am amazed at how in tune Kenneth Anton is regarding this Satanic cabal. Too many people who are interested in learning the truth are not prone to read volumes and volumes of literature, some specious and some deadly accurate. I have literally dozens of books regarding the Jewish NWO, not to mention many other books on Kindle, and I think Popsicle Man is a great introduction to anyone looking for an explanation concerning the evil that has taken hold of the world. The Popsicle Man is 365 pages of entertaining story, intertwined with everything you need to know about the events of the past 200 years that lead up to the cataclysmic events that are unfolding in front of our very eyes. The only thing I disliked was a bit too much emphasis on sex, but that doesn't detract from both the entertainment value and the educational value of Anton's book. I highly recommend it, especially as a starting point for those who are trying to figure out what is the cause of the on-going insanity in this world. I also recommend Deanna Spingola's 737 page "The Ruling Elite - The Zionist Seizure of World Power"; (available at Amazon) nothing fictional in her books; just convincing, well researched and well written TRUTH THAT WILL SET YOU FREE.

Nice, short book to make yourself familiar with Pythonic syntaxes

"Writing Idiomatic Python 3" attempts to uncover the elegance of Python3 syntax; what programmers call 'Pythonic code'.
Python has plethora of cool ways to trim down and beautify code. This book deals with them one by one.

What I liked:
I learned a lot of "hidden" features..well, hidden for beginners/intermediate users at least, some of which follow:
- Use of iterable to avoid repetition of value comparison. Sample: if name in ('Tom', 'Dick', 'Harry')
- Use of enumerate() function to eliminate maintenance of an explicit index variable in a loop.
- * operator to represent "rest" of a list while unpacking it.
- Along the same line of unpacking, use of '_' as a placeholder to ignore an unpacked value.
- Clever use of set to eliminate duplicate entries from an Iterable.
- Swiss knife for Iterables: itertools module

What I disliked:
I object against avoiding explicit comparison to None. Agreed, the author has pointed out an exception where one should explicitly compare with None. However, I find it safer to be consistent.
Also, I find it a bit aggressive to use the title "Harmful" in order to depict the non-recommended code sample. I would rather prefer terms "Pythonic" and "UnPythonic".

Who should read this book?
This is a must-read book for people who are acquainted with Python. Complete beginners, however, might find it difficult to keep their heads above water. It kind of hangs in between post-beginner and advanced levels.
I would strongly recommend this book to the Java/c# immigrants. With such a short Pythonic reference in hand, they should feel themselves at home.
Even those who have been writing in Python since long, but are still unaware of Pythonic style of writing code, could find this book an enlightening read.

Great book for any Python developer!

First of all, this book isn't a tutorial. If you want to get up to speed on Python I recommend Learn Python the Hard Way, 3rd edition, Python In A Day, or Learning Python, 5th Edition. Once you get a basic understanding of Python, this book will suddenly come alive in usefulness.

The author goes over an amazing number of idioms, but in a way that isn't tiring and serves as a great reference. I've programmed in Python since 2005, yet in reading this book I discovered a few things about Python as well some handy tricks to clarify my code. Each chapter, section, or subsection includes both harmful and idiomatic (good) examples displayed in very legible, highlighted code. Also, there are page breaks between each chapter, section, and subsection, making it even easier to reference. For teams and projects, this book can readily serve as an easily reference coding guide. I know because I've been on, or heard about projects where we used it in this capacity.

The book is just pure text and code. Wise move! Books should either have good art or no art. Good or amusing art in a technical book breaks up dense content or reinforces a message, whereas low quality or tacky art distracts the reader and diminishes the entire work.

The only possibly issue I have is the author's preference for absolute over relative arguments in subsection 3.3.2. It's a tiny, tiny issue that depends on your project and use case, so please don't get hung up on it.

All in all, I heartily recommend this book. The price is worth it, and the cleaner code you write will make the book pay for itself in the improved productive of you and your team.

This is a must buy book for all Python developers - new or experienced.

I got the book with the preorder discount from the author's website. (Both 2.7 and 3.3 - pdf & epub versions for $12.99). It's a great deal and I'm very happy with it, as a new Python developer, coming from a Java environment.

As a specialist in infectious diseases, Farmer's goal is nothing less than redressing the "steep gradient of inequality" in medical service to the desperately poor. His work establishing a complex of public health facilities on the central plateau of Haiti forms the keystone to efforts that now encompass initiatives on three continents. Farmer and a trio of friends began in the 1980s by creating a charitable foundation called Partners in Health (PIH, or Zanmi Lasante in Creole), armed with passionate conviction and $1 million in seed money from a Boston philanthropist. Paul Farmer is a 44-year-old specialist in infectious diseases and an attending physician at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. His biographer, Tracy Kidder, read his book on the connections between poverty and disease -- Infections and Inequalities -- and wrote to him, "I'm reading your oeuvre." "Ah, but that's not my oeuvre," Farmer replied. "To see my oeuvre you have to come to Haiti." Indeed, Farmer founded a hospital and health center, Zanmi Lasante, in Cange, Haiti, hours from the capital and at the end of a gutted road in a region destitute even by Haiti's standards, as part of an extensive community-based health network linked to a hospital, Clinique Bon Sauveur (see Figure). For more than 20 years, Farmer has spent many months every year there, often taking care of patients himself and continually improving the treatments offered by the clinic. These now include antiretroviral drugs. Lasante is supported by a foundation based in Boston called Partners in Health, which is headed by Ophelia Dahl and largely financed by Tom White, the philanthropic owner of a large Boston construction firm. There is more. Through his patients in Cange, Farmer became interested in multidrug-resistant tuberculosis. From Haiti, he exported treatment of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis to Peru and then to Siberia, achieving cure rates comparable to those in the United States. Through the Institute for Health and Social Justice (the research and education division of Partners in Health) and his associate Jim Yong Kim, he started a movement to lower prices for the second-line drugs necessary to treat resistant tuberculosis and successfully lobbied the World Health Organization for changes in treatment recommendations for tuberculosis. Readers may have heard some of this story before (Farmer has received a MacArthur award and the American Medical Association's Dr. Nathan Davis Award) and may have wondered, as I did, where he came from and how one man could accomplish so much. Kidder traces Farmer's trajectory, starting with his unconventional childhood, which included living in a bus and on a leaky boat. He was given a scholarship to Duke, where he majored in anthropology and worked alongside poor Haitian farm workers in North Carolina's tobacco fields. After graduation he spent a year in Haiti, where he met Ophelia Dahl, and then went to Harvard Medical School. While in medical school and during his residencies and fellowships, he spent more time in Cange than in Boston. How does Farmer do it? Kidder provides some explanations: he works nonstop, hardly sleeps, sees his wife and child for a day or so every few months, inspires an uncommon degree of devotion and enthusiasm among collaborators and potential donors, and tolerates planes and airports for days on end. In addition, the Boston medical establishment has bent rules and regulations to accommodate his needs. Convincing? Maybe. There remains something miraculous about Paul Farmer. Should one go out and buy Mountains beyond Mountains? By all means. Not only it is it an enjoyable book, but it is also very likely that a part of the $25.95 spent in purchasing it will find its way back to Haiti. That is more than can be said about many books. Politics, Health, and Paul Farmer

I finished this remarkable book a couple of weeks ago and have been too busy learning more about Paul Farmer and others who have been working for decades to improve the health, well-being, and living conditions for people in Haiti, Peru, and Russia to write a review. A co-founder of Partners In Health, Dr. Farmer and his cohorts continue to give of their time, money, talents, and just about all of their resources to help ease the suffering of the poor, hungry, sick, imprisoned, and dying.

Until reading Tracy Kidder’s book, I didn’t know men like Farmer and his ilk existed. Someone asked me if he was a Christian, and I replied that he doesn’t talk much about his religious beliefs except for a frequent reference to the 40th verse in Matthew 25: “Verily, I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.” Farmer definitely walks the talk.

This is the second of Kidder’s books that I have read, the first being Strength in What Remains. His books are filled with fact after fact about things I’ve never considered. For example, I now know about Burundi and the genocide there, but until two years ago I had never heard of this small, incredibly poor country and Deo, one of its citizens who escaped the genocide and became a doctor after living as a homeless man in NYC.

In both of these books, Kidder’s scene descriptions of Haiti, Cuba, NYC, Burundi, and several other locales are so realistic that the reader can see, hear, and smell the environments. He’s also a master at character description and in adding an encyclopedic array of facts while holding the reader’s interest (mine anyway). Although I knew economics and medicine were related, I now have a deeper understanding of the interplay between politics, poverty, wealth, and healthcare.

If you want to get out of your comfort zone and learn more about the world and some of its people, read Mountains Beyond Mountains.

Definitely worth the read.

If I were to judge the content of this book by the actions of the main subject, Dr. Paul Farmer, I would naturally award it 5 stars. This is an amazing individual - one gets tired just reading about him as the travels the world - Haiti, Peru, Russia - aiding the impoverished by treating infectious diseases like TB and AIDs. How he ever finds time to write, publish, and address conventions is beyond me. But, Kidder's prose gets a bit wearying, repetitive, and plodding at times. Unusual for so accomplished a writer ( I enjoyed several of his other books, especially the Pulitzer winner, "Soul of A New Machine"). Still, a book worth reading if only for learning some Haitian history, the operation of the Cuban health care system and the sad state of the medical care to which the world's impoverished masses are subject.

A catalyst for good

Tracy Kidder is the master journalist, like a clear window on the world. Long ago I read The Soul of a New Machine and liked it, but didn't think too much about it. The brilliance of Kidder's style is so make you feel like you are there, really feel what the subject is about, without any distortion positive or negative.

What an amazing subject for this work: Dr. Paul Farmer. This guy is just amazing! As a college student, he travels to Haiti to dedicate himself to the poor. He attends Harvard while spending 8 months a year in Haiti building his own hospital there. He gets a PhD in Anthropology at the same time he gets his MD, the latter not surprising given that he already has 6 years of intense clinical experience dealing directly with life and death situations. You would expect such a person to take on airs, maybe be a big proud of himself, maybe even be motivated by the 'big bucks' so clearly available in a rich city. Dr. Farmer appears to be vying for a "saint" award. Kidder makes you feel like you are there sitting in the same room, and it is no big deal.

To say this book is inspiring is badly understating it. Look at what you can do if you hold true to your ideals! It is humbling as well. Dr. Farmer is my age, and I can't help drawing parallels with my own life, and there is no way I could do a fraction of what he is done. Yet I don't need to: it is satisfying to know that there are people like him in the world.

There is so much to learn from the book. Never give in, and never give up! His daily accomplishments are so small, and yet at the same time so profound and consistent. It is all about "caring". If you care about your friends, your neighbors, your family, and - yes - the rest of the world, how can you not love a person who literally saves people on a daily basis? Are we seeing a saint walking among us? One has to wonder.

This is a story that needs to be told. It reminds me a lot of Three Cups of Tea. If only we could motivate others to do the same -- if only we could motivate ourselves to do the same -- the world could be a better place. How refreshing to read about a real superhero.

While continuing to work in Haiti, he started to investigate Lima Peru, where there was a disturbing trend: people with Tuberculosis that was resistant to 4, maybe even 5 of the top antibiotics. He goes there and finds that in general Peru is competently following a program in strict accordance to WHO standards. The problem was the WHO guidelines! How to raise this issue without alienating the world's most important health organization, or the officials in Peru. At the same time, what can be done about drugs with inflated costs putting them out of reach of these poor patients?

His travels take him to the prisons in Russia, which has a an extreme problem with TB as well. Prisoners are easy to study and monitor. He points out that the prisons are like a pump that cycles TB into the general population with prisoners who stay a few years and bring the disease back with him. You almost cheer when he gets a grant from the Gates foundation to develop a modified procedure to battle MDR-TB.

He does not do any of this all by himself. There are a lot of truly dedicate people who recognize his talent and follow/help him all along the way. Kidder manages to capture many of these people as well. At still, Farmer's real talent is to be the catalyst that makes it all come together. It might be better to say it all flows around him...

In the end, his success is due to one simple talent, and he says it best in his own words: "I like people." It is hard not to like him back.

About the Author

Diane Poole Heller, PhD, is an established expert in the field of Adult Attachment Theory, the Somatic Experiencing® method of trauma resolution, and a synthesis of integrative healing methods. She is a trainer and presenter who offers workshops and educational materials on trauma, attachment models and their dynamics in childhood and adult relationships, and other topics.   For several decades, Dr. Heller has lectured and taught around the world as both a Somatic Experiencing trainer and special topics presenter, most recently with her popular DARe (Dynamic Attachment Re-Patterning experience) series on Adult Attachment.   She began her work with Dr. Peter Levine, founder of the Foundation for Human Enrichment, now the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute, and the Somatic Experiencing method of trauma resolution. The best thing about this book is the author’s gentle, reassuring tone. I’ve read other books on attachment theory that explain the attachment styles and provide relationship advice, but this is the first book that really made me feel like there is nothing wrong with those of us who have an insecure attachment style. I love how the author often writes in first person plural point of view (“When we grow up with an avoidant adaptation” or “Those of us with an ambivalent attachment style”), creating a sense of inclusion and acceptance. It makes this subject so much easier to read about.This book describes all four attachment styles: secure, avoidant, ambivalent, and the often-neglected disorganized style. The author explains that these styles are on a continuum and can be quite fluid, changing over time and within different contexts. She maintains that anyone can learn how to function more securely and enjoy a happy relationship. To that end, she provides tips and exercises for working on your own attachment issues as well as learning how to understand and get along better with people of different attachment styles. Importantly, she also provides some suggestions for when it may be best to move on from a relationship.This book was easy to understand and emphasized a hopeful message that intimate connection is everyone’s birthright. I recommend this book for anyone interested in improving their relationships, or for counselors who want to help clients with attachment issues.I was provided an unproofed ARC through NetGalley that I volunteered to review. Because I have not seen the final published version, I cannot comment on the final editing and formatting.

Carpe Demon Redux Audio Book Review

Very likely I made a mistake listening to this book immediately after the first one. Kenner reuses a number of the same plot devices from her first Demon Hunter novel to much the same effect in this one. I noticed that someone else has listed the repititions so I don't feel obligated to do so.

I was once again impressed how she manages to get beat up including being throttled on a regular basis and no one, especially not her husband, notices any bruising. I would think the police would be keeping an eye on her-- or at least the press since her husband Stewart is running for office. Anyway, this is a time passer. I'm starting to hope that poor oblivious Stewart finally gets clued into what is going on in his town-- He is reminiscent of 50's and 60's sitcom husbands. His wife is hiding a big part of her life from him which includes shifting dead bodies out of his house and he appears to have no idea or is easily distracted.

As for the reader, Laura Hicks, she is quite good if a little flat sounding when doing first person narration. When it comes to conversation though she is very good voicing the children, demons and neighbors.

After settling in Pendleton, OR, he became friends with children living on the Umatilla Indian Reservation, growing up with a passion for horses and a talent for 'tam[ing] a horse without breaking what he loved so much―its spirit.' This picture-book biography is filled with Fletcher's own spirit as, despite facing prejudice in his attempts to enter and be judged fairly in rodeos, he became an expert in riding a bucking bronco. An outstanding read!

George Fletcher was an incredibly talented cowboy and rider, yet he was only given second place at the 1911 Pendleton Round-Up. The author traces George's early life as his family took the Oregon Trail to the Northwest, his friendship with the children on the Umatilla Reservation, his lifelong love of horses, and the story of that historic rodeo. The illustrations capture the spirit of the horses and riders. The sense of movement comes across clearly in images of George "riding a make-believe bronco" or riding back to back on the same bucking horse with cowboy Jesse Stahl. But George's love of horses is also shown, especially in an image of young George blowing lightly into a horse's face.Stories of individuals who persevere and follow their passion despite prejudice are always a welcome addition to classroom and library collections. It is also good to have a wider variety of individuals to read about during Black History Month than the few Civil Rights figures that most lessons focus on. Authors such as Vaunda, who research stories that have been left out of the history books, help to fill gaps in our understanding and collective knowledge.I read an advance copy provided by the publisher through NetGalley.
