But iCue was a failure: it never developed an audience and was canceled as if it were a sitcom with bad ratings. In The More We Know, Eric Klopfer and Jason Haas, both part of the MIT development team, describe the rise and fall of iCue and what it can teach us about new media, old media, education, and the challenges of innovating in educational media. Klopfer and Haas show that iCue was hampered by, among other things, an educational establishment focused on "teaching to the test," television producers uncomfortable with participatory media, and confusion about the market. But this is not just a cautionary tale; sometimes more can be learned from an interesting failure than a string of successes. I have seen the future

This book covers the trials and tribulations of MIT's "The Education Arcade" and NBC News as they attempt to create the Next Big Thing in education and learning. From the original student-centered approach with learning games, video from NBC archives for use in student compositions, and social networked projects to its eventual teacher's resource of historic videos (NBC Learn), the story is one of vision stymied by the corporate need for profit and the strong negative reaction of the education establishment.

Lest anyone think of the authors as teacher-haters, they fully acknowledge that young and inexperienced learners need the guidance and coaching of a teacher. Teaching will never be out of style, but teaching has to change.

I sincerely believe the authors have documented the first real draft of education in the 21st century. Without teacher buy in and corporate stamina, the effort remained too small and compromises too many to result in the vision. However, it WAS a first draft; one of many to come. I continue to lament the resistance of the educational establishment. There is so much to do.

Consumed My Whole Day - Very Enjoyable Read & Interesting

I had this pre-ordered after reading the WSJ article. It came yesterday around noon and I finished it at 4:00 AM this morning, with few breaks within that time frame. It wasn't the plan for my day, but I don't regret changing my day around to read this book.

I would say any book that holds my interest like that deserves a 5-start rating, though there are a few things that I'd tweak to get it closer to perfection. My official score, being a tough grader, is a 4.6/5.0 and I wouldn't resell it for twice what I paid ... especially now that it's fully highlighted and sticky-noted throughout (which makes the book more valuable to me now because I've identified the portions that spoke directly to me and my own experiences).

I really enjoyed Scott's independent thinking and challenges of conventional wisdom throughout this book, especially as it contrasts with other self-help, goal-setting or business advice books. For instance, choosing an opportunity for which one has some sort of inherent advantage rather than blindly prescribing "you can do whatever you want" appeals to my pragmatic mind. I have wrestled with this exact conclusion within the past year as I work through my own list of new ideas and opportunities, so I enjoyed that perspective as it resonates with my own thinking.

I really enjoyed the thinking on pg. 40, which is fully highlighted, less perhaps a couple sentences. This is where Scott talks about his mental model of not wanting to sell his time due to limited upside and finding a product that is infinitely scalable. I appreciated this candidness, which allows the reader to better understand the later "luck" and apparent rapid success of Dilbert. It's clear to me, Scott's success was a lifetime in the making, the product of continued experimentation and the tenacity to stay at it. This whole book was helpful to me, as my model is exactly the same and the road to success is anything but certain when you're placing bets on what the public wants. Having a system that embraces and anticipates failure, in particular, is an essential tool to avoid letting temporary results bleed over into derailing what could be a highly successful longer-term career choice.

Pg. 88, talking about when to quit and how successful ventures often have SOME element of success early-on also resonated with me, and is another page that is more yellow than white after reading this book. These comments also directly resonated with some false-starts I've had, where I correctly pulled the plug after minimal investment of time because things just did not feel right almost from the get-go. I felt poorly about pulling the red handle so early while I was ejecting, but now looking back I know I was practicing the exact type of discipline one needs to practice when trying totally new things. Plan on a good chunk of your initial tests, ideas and hypotheses being off the mark and blindly plowing time and effort at soft-starts is a recipe for disaster. One of my favorite quotes in the book is "Persistence is useful, but there's no point in being an idiot about it." That got a "lol!"

I also appreciated Scott's thoughts on useful core skills, especially psychology. This topic has become more and more interesting to me after sluffing through Pscych 202 in college, when it seems like a diversion from more useful topics. I now see how important that is, and also how little I know in this universe of knowledge. The terms page of psychological topics is a lifetime of potential study in itself, so the book leads you to new domains of study if you so choose.

Scott urges the reader to not accept anything at face value, and my personal model embraces a good chunk of this body of wisdom with a few of my own twists. Any book that holds your interest and gives you new things to think about is worth owning and reading, in my opinion. This book satisfies that criteria with ease. excellent advice

The book was a joy to read

His key ideas are easy to follow because he keeps it simple and Scott Adams writes in a clear and witty manner

For example the chapter on applying a system vs setting goals and trying to follow them was worth the price of the book many times over for me (and this is reinforced through the book). In his own words goals are a reach-it-and-be-done situation (where you are often waiting to achieve it someday in the future) whereas a system is something you do on a regular or daily basis with a reasonable expectation that doing so will get you to a better place in life. Wanting better health or wanting to lose 10 kg are goals. Being active everyday is a system. One is tied to another - but goals people are fighting the feeling of discouragement at each turn and the systems people are feeling good every-time they apply their system.

I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone smart and weary of reading tired cliches in the self-help genre. The book is a breath of fresh air!

An Almost Successful Book about Success

Scott Adams's How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life is almost a success. In it Adams tells us about he succeeded and offers his readers his advice on how to be both successful and happy.

Adams is at his best when he writes about figuring out how things work and what is important. Readers of his popular blog will recognize such topics as the moist robot, the single most important metric to measure, the five most important factors for happiness, how to thrive without using freewill, and other such topics.

One of his key principles is to distinguish goals from systems. Generally, it's better to pursue a system to get what you want rather than to pursue a goal. Goals are generally bad things as they focus you on what you have not accomplished and therefore feel negative. Unfortunately his discussion of the difference between goals and systems is confused and unclear. He seems to be saying that the reader's goal should be to come with a system that works.

I do appreciate that Adams consistently urges the reader to experiment, to be open minded, and not to follow the advice of cartoonists. The focus should be on what works for you. His humility is a welcome relief from much of the Success literature.

Some parts of the book, especially in the middle chapters, read like annotated lists constructed quickly from Internet searches. Other parts of the book are much better and many of Adams's insights are interesting, captivating, and even brilliant. The tone of this book is quite serious - there are even research footnotes - and it is clear that Adams believes he has something important to share with the reader. Fortunately much of the book is entertaining and includes humorous examples to lighten the occasionally sententious tone of some pronouncements.

Overall this is a useful and interesting book. I look forward to testing some of his suggestions and seeing if they improve my life.

A beginning to the story that had only just begun...

If you enjoyed Willow, sit down with the Shadow War trilogy, and prepare to see the world we glimpsed in Willow fleshed out - with all the ugliest problems and the most beautiful creatures.

Definitely a darker story than the movie, it nonetheless has more depth, and keeps your attention. I loved the series - even though ***SPOILER*** my two favorite characters from the movie are killed off within the first 50 pages of the first book ***END SPOILER***

That said, when I began this series, I truly thought "Wow - this is nothing like the movie, I think this is going to be a real stinker". Pushing onward, I quickly became consumed by the storyline, and finshed the series in a very short time.

Now my only complaint is that it's over!!

Get through the first 1/3 of the first book, and you'll be hooked. Enjoy!

Probably the worst book I've ever read

This book bored me to tears. Having read the novel Willow (much better than the film I might add), I expected to see further development of the characters I had grown to really enjoy reading about. Instead, virtually the entire cast is eliminated practically before the book starts. We are left with a bleak, ugly world with characters whose personalities have completely changed since the first book (that being the two brownies and Willow, who no longer goes by that name). It's as if Lucas and Claremont wanted an established world but didn't want to use anything the original author had written.
We are treated to long, drawn out sequences that seem to have no purpose and never end. Elora Danan is not a character I liked, and Willow and the brownies are whiny jerks. Claremont's writing style, which helped popularize the X-Men comics, is sadly out of place in this novel. He's very melodramatic and I think that takes a lot away from the story. To top it off, the book just ends for no particular reason. No big climax, nothing to make you want to read ahead to the next book. That might work in comics where a new issue comes out every month, but it sure doesn't work in novel format.
Overall, I simply hated this book. I hated the authors, their treatment (and killing) of established characters, the writing style, and lack of a real, cohesive story. I don't know what book the other reviewers read, but it wasn't this one. If you want a good novel, read Willow. As for this waste of paper, DON'T BUY IT!

What a disappointment!

I liked the movie _Willow_ (I have never *seen* a copy of the book, didn't know there was one, and I frequent sci-fi/fantasy shelves...), so I thought this would be fun. I also like Star Wars, etc, so I was thinking adventure, magic, hero, battles, etc. Nope. There is a very static sort of adventure (how much adventure can there be in squishing onesself magically through a surface of solid rock for a very long time?), the hero is busy being a philosopher or something, his magic is dark and, well, icky, and the battles only kill off people you like. Bummer. I thought Madmartigan was kind of a buffoon for most of _Willow_, but he was likable and you had to like Sorsha (Sorcia?) defying her heritage to take care of the baby who was destined to destroy her own mother, but of course both of them got killed off in the first section of the book. I plowed on, thinking surely there had to be some kind of major payoff for that later, but no. Willow changes his name and becomes this unlovable and I feel untrustworthy creature who still isn't very bright but now also isn't very good. There is a sort of backlash in the adventure genre, in which the hero never gets the girl (or the boy, whatever), and has to be lonely and ultra-responsible for the weight of the world. I don't know that I hate that trend overall (hey, it includes Luke Skywalker, for one thing), but this goes way past that into making the hero someone I want my kid to stay the hell away from. This book was horrible. I kept waiting for the payoff. No payoff. No even smidgin of hope. Ick.

Love the unique and captivating voice of Charlotte Stein!

This strange, alluring romance is the story of Molly and Cyrian. When Molly takes the job of live-in housekeeper to an eccentric aloof man, she finds herself exposed to him in more ways than one. Cyrian is by all rights someone whom she should stay far away from, a man who makes no effort to reveal any more of himself to her than at all necessary. But as she uncovers him layer by layer, she finds herself more and more attracted to the enigma that he is. And when Cryrian starts to return her feelings, things between them heat up considerably. But is an affair all this is, or is it leading to something deeper?

Though I know it's not to everyone's taste, Charlotte's introspective first person point of view found in many of her stories, including this one, really works for me. You know everything that the character of Molly feels, sees, imagines, frets over, lusts for, and despairs about. The romance between her and Cyrian unfolds like the petals of a rose, stripping away Cyrian's standoffish veneer until the heart of him is exposed. I loved how the romance contains elements of suspense to keep you on edge, wondering if they will ever get to be truly together or if that will just be too much for Cyrian. The sex is raw and blunt, sometimes even shocking and yet the romance is sweet, creating a contrast that works well and makes the story unique. For me, it was thoroughly entertaining and I bought into this unlikely couple finding their way to a happy ending. 5 stars.

Gothic in setting & naughty in tone.

Gothic in setting and naughty in tone, Sweet Agony was a delight. While Sweet Agony was clearly inspired by Benedict Cumberbatch's portrayal of Sherlock, Sweet Agony is much more.

Molly Parker is a young but very determined woman. She bluffs and retorts her way in to Cyrian Hanford's house to become his housekeeper, despite the many physical and emotional obstacles he puts in her way. The Gothic dark house, with it dark paneled rooms and odd corners is a refuge, its library a wonderland.

Cyrian Hanford is a reclusive repressed eccentric who is both awkwardly handsome and possessing of a cutting wit. He is secretive, deceptive but also generous and perceptive. Mr. Hanford at turns avoids Molly or baits her, seeking a way to push her out his life. Molly persists however not only to see through his bluster but to recognize his goodness, kindness and his desire.

Sweet Agony was incredibly funny and sexy. I found myself startling my family with my laughter and struggling to find a polite/family friendly way to explain it (there is really no good way to explain why a read-out-loud of pornographic Victorian text is hilarious, without mentioning that it was a pornographic Victorian text). Stein's trademark first person magic is used to great effect in this novel. Limited as we are by Molly's knowledge we are held in supsense and discover along with her Cyrian's secrets.

While Cyrian and Molly are both sexually inexperienced they make up for it through curiosity and hunger. Their halting but scorching sexual encounters were great. Molly and Cyrian might be mismatched in many ways with the vast gaps in their social class, education and personal wealth, but they value and treasure each other like no else would. They have both been horrifically hurt through neglect and abuse by their families of origin but in each other find kindred spirits, play and love.

As with almost all my previous Stein books, I'm left wanting more, but I trust Cyrian and Molly to have a HEA that pleases them even if it confounds others.

Read if you like BDSM sex books

I didn't know what to expect with this book, but when I read the synopsis, my first thought was Jane Eyre, and then when the author started making references to Eyre, I see that was intentional. Then as I was reading, I thought it was like the movie the Secretary, this was very close to the beginning of the book, and as I read further it really began to resemble the movie. There was promise in the beginning of the book, but as the book went on it just became about sex, and nothing else happened, just a whole lot of sex exploration, and the sex is of the BDSM nature. The descriptions were very graphic, and the word choice was over the top. They talk dirty to each other all the time, and try to use the most vulgar words. It wasn't really to my liking. I gave this a 3 star, rather than less because I like the whole premise of the story. The book was fine, but it definitely needed more story to it, and the ending was pretty blah. All in all, you have Beauty and the Beast/Jane Eyre in the BDSM world, so if you like all sex books then this will be good for you!

One of my favorite books about the struggle against apartheid

One of my favorite books about the struggle against apartheid, told beautifully and movingly by a humble Christian minister passionately committed to justice. It is also a vital record of the tragedy of Sophiatown, the lively integrated suburb of Johannesburg that was bulldozed under by the apartheid regime for white resettlement in the late 1950s. (Blacks were 'resettled' in Meadowlands [Soweto] and elsewhere.)

My one concern/complaint about THIS version is that I wonder about copyright violation of Huddleston's original book: the statue cited at the front of this text refers to legal reproduction of "an original work published before 1923," but this book was published by Doubleday & Co. in 1956. What gives, I wonder? Also, in my copy pages 191-192 are missing. Nabu Public Domain Reprints: what's up? Father Trevor Huddleston deserves better.

Of historical interest

This book was useful to me in filling out my knowledge of how apartheid became more severe in the 1950s and particularly in events surrounding the destruction of black Sophiatown in Johannesburg South Africa. The author, Anglican priest Trevor Huddleston, was a real hero among whites in South Africa at the time, and his story is inspiring. (I was privileged to meet him in 1967 when he headed a rural mission in Tanzania. Unfortunately I had no real idea as yet about his prior heroic role in South Africa.) But the book was very much intended as a message to its time, and there are better ways into the broader subject of the history of apartheid or the life of legendary Sophiatown. You might start with a biography of Mandela or other leading African figures in the struggle.
