one of the best architectural guides

This is a splendid little architectural guide book, filled with valuable information, great photos and perceptive comments. It puts London's recent architectural achievements in context and is of value to both visitors and residents. I like the fact that the author is unafraid to express opinions, unlike most guide books that are anodyne and timid at the possibility of causing offense. The book covers an amazing amount of ground, with useful chapters on areas such as the Docklands, the emerging neighborhoods of places such as Hoxton. The amount of information on each building is good, with insights into why something looks the way it does. The story behind the Gherkin, for example is fascinating.

Ken Allinson knows all about the subject. The printed book may be good, but the Kindle version is terrible. The maps are unreadable and the photos are small and poorly organized. Need urgent improvements!

SHAME ON ME FOR BUYING IT!!

Shame on me!! for buying yet another CF book. I said I was going to stop reading her books. I should have followed by own advice. There are elements of Shadow Rider that I enjoyed the Ferraro family is just wonderful. But there is not enough story to fill up a book. Again we have a book with about 70% sex. I hate rape written into my stories and avoid buying stories with that content, but it was no indication that SR had a rape victim a young teen until I read it. The poor girl has been sexually raped everyway possible to rape a person and cruelly beaten by all 3 uncles for 2 years. It reminds me of when we were introduced to Skylar in Dark Legend. I don't think there is anything interesting in reading about rape. I really don't understand a female author and her readers liking too read this sort of depraved acts like rape of a child. What's Up with that?? But it really does tell a lot about ourselves. The other problem I had was the story is very repetitive. Every other line it repeats what it just said. Just fillers to get to the word count.

I did enjoy how the Ferraro Family dispensed there justice on the bad guys. The end of the book was quite good and I did see glimpse of the Old Christine Feehan. Maybe she is on her way back!! One can only hope. Sorry I can't Recommend this book!! If you are addicted like me get it from the library or share a copy with a group of friends.

You call this a romance?

Just finished reading Shadow Rider and I'm left feeling angry and confused. What did I just read? Why did I waste hours of my precious time on such a disturbingly bad book? This is supposed to be the start of a great new series by Christine Feehan, of the Carpathian fame?

Because unlike the Carpathian series, this one left very little to like. In fact, I could barely finish the book and half the time, had to force myself to get through a chapter. Even after rushing to finish the book, I'm still at a loss for how to describe what a shadow rider is and what the series is all about.

Basically, the focus is on the Ferraro family, headed by Stefano Ferraro. Stefano and his family are rich, powerful and naturally handsome/beautiful. Oh, and also they have some shadowy powers (whose purpose and existence were never explained). Since the age of two (yes really 2), they have been training to fight. They protect (bully is a better word) the people in their neighborhood, and people are fearful of them because they act like they are above the law. Their interactions with others remind me of poorly written, wanna-be mobsters. Take for example how Stefano had a girl taken for questioning by his cousins or how they can storm into people's houses and do what they want with them.

But they are the heroes of the series for some reason. And Stefano, when he sees the weak heroine Francesca decides he wants her because there is something in her shadow that connects to his shadow. And it supposedly gives his other family members hope that they can reproduce other shadow riders to continue the line. But how Stafano treats and talks to Francesca ("F" curses means I love you apparently) and how Francesca just takes it all because he is this manipulative, rich guy who holds the purse strings (so it's ok that he treats her like a brainless object). This is just a recipe for disaster, not romance!

This storyline, mixed with really bad, eye-rolling dialogue, no world building (shadow what again) and horrible, unlikable characters makes for a dull series. I'm appalled at all the top reviews. This book is so bad I already deleted it from my kindle, though I wished I could return it instead for a full refund. It was a sad waste of my time. I'm sorry for giving such a harsh review but this really deserved it. There is nothing to recommend this book at all.

Abusive Hero

Christine Feehan used to be a great writer. I regret trying out this new series. It's filled with cliches and a hero who would be abusive in any other context.

Plot:
Rich powerful man, destitute helpless woman. She needs to "heal" the sadness in him. He needs to save her from danger. He acts like a classic dom/jerk/potential abuser. He is insanely jealous and possessive. She can't think for herself. But they have this electric connection. They fight it but fall in love. He is magically transformed. She is now taken care of and wealthy.

Problems:
The heroine is too perfect and to stupid to live. She accepts abusive behaviour. This includes bodyguards preventing her from leaving, stepping on her feet to correct her behavior, etc. The hero cursing at her. The hero kidnapping her. The hero making her friend cry.

Review:

A Useful Simple Read

I received this book as a review copy, that said..... please note that I am an alternative practitioner and have a great deal of experience with essential oils and herbs, including those for digestive and gut problems.....

Based on my professional opinion:

This book is a nice, simple to understand book about the herbs you need to heal your gut.

Yes, it is relatively short, but full of the information anyone would need to heal the digestive system with essential oils.

I like the way the book goes over certain spotlighted essential oils in greater detail.

Of course, there are books out there that go into greater detail about essential oils in general, but this book doesn't pretend to be about that, but clearly states that the topic is gut health.

The only things I would have liked to see would be colorful images and a more detailed reference section, detailing the cited sources, rather than just a link list.

Otherwise, a worthy read and good guide to have around the house.

Get good gut bacteria

I have friends and family who have gut issues so this book is a great find. I have listened to Dr Z talk about oils in his Essential Oil Revolution and he knows his stuff. I am excited to share this knowledge w the people in my life w gut issues. I also know that oils help in so many others ways but it is so good to see a book on this specific issue.
I really like how each oil that is mentioned is given a through overview so the reader can learn more about oils. I also love all the little suggested combinations to use to aid in good guy bacteria. Keep up the hard work on alternative medicine Dr Z :)

I love the fact that the information is based on scientific research and not the personal stories or testimonials of people who use them. Uplifting and encouraging

Staying home and educating your kids can be wonderfully isolated from the crazy world. Sometimes that isolation doesn't seem so wonderful. This book was so encouraging. I continue to refer back to it when I am losing the wind in my sails. It reminds me why my work with my kids is so important. It lifted my spirits knowing others had walked this path before me and finished the race. It calms my spirit to know that through the winter, I can always depend to the spring to come again. I am not the only woman out here struggling. I can endure.

I recommend this for Moms who have homeschooled for years, and are tired and struggling to continue. I also recommend it for those just beginning the journey.

life changing

In a very dark place I read these words. And like light at the end of the tunnel I began to walk toward what I had forgotten - that this journey is not about me, its about the Lord and His work in our family. I am so thankful that Sally took the time to record her thoughts and struggles along her walk, as well as what the Lord taught her in each season. This is my favorite homeschool book and one that I refer everyone to. Truly it inspires and turns your eyes back to the Lord.

If you have forgotten the whys of the choices you have made to homeeducate and you just need to sit with an encouraging friend for while and cry and remember, this is your book.

Just finished reading this. It is very good!! Sally Clarkston is very real and open. She talks about the ups and downs of Mothering. The Joys and the sorrows. What she should have done differently and despite it all things still turned out great. She makes you stop and think about Mothering. What is Mothering? Where are you at in your Mothering? It's interesting to look at each chapter of Mothering as a season. Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter. While reading her book you won't feel like you are being talked down to or that you don't quite hit the mark. I came away feeling encouraged and renewed and ready to try again.

If you need some encouraging in your Mothering - - I would recommend this book.

I gave up on Danielle Steel a few years ago.. all novels had the same pitch, and it became not enjoyable to read her, after, reading many many of her books.. This was recommended by a friend, who could not put it down.. That's what I like to hear about a book.. I was totally into it as well, and will try Ms Steel another time.

With everything going on during the turn of the 20th century, you could really feel this young girl's pain and joy. It was at a time in our history where women were second class citizens, and events that were totally out of their control happened. I could not put this book down. Annabelle had so many chapters in your life, up and down. The other historical' type of book Danielle Steel wrote was The Ring. Both of these books, in my opinion were her absolute best!

What a story. This book is so full of dramatic events. Both heroic and sad, but how this woman had the courage to help wounded soldiers in a new country. She also pursued her desire to become a doctor and lived in very dire conditions. Not a very beautiful existence for this woman but she held her head up high and made a good life for herself.

I loved this book so much I did not want it to end; it was VERY interesting from beginning to end with many twists and turns that were woven into the plot. One of this author's must reads, I think!

If you like roller coaster rides, you'll love this. Never a dull moment. Sometimes happy, sometimes sad, disappointed but soon to follow that "can't wait to see what is next" feeling! I loved it, hated it then appreciated the whole novel. Good read!

I am a literature major, but wanted something easy to read to relax on a plane. This is a simple book with sweet characters that are very uncomplicated. You could tell what was coming well ahead of time. It would have been nice to see more depth in Annabelle. She went through her life in a very disconnected way. Her soul searching was very superficial considering all the angst she suffered through.

I liked this book very much. It kept my interest and could'nt wait to start reading it again when I put it down. I would recommend this book to my granddaughter. I really like Danielle Steele, she writes very interesting clean books anyone could read.

Not the usual storyline for this lady. It moved along & was never boring. It also kept surprising me with the twists. I enjoyed the book but it irritated me that so many tragedies took place.

Engaging, informative, and entertaining!

Snipers, Shills, and Sharks is an instant classic that will appeal to anyone interested in understanding why ebay works the way it does and how it relates to a beautiful economic theory developed over the past few decades. How do English, Dutch, and Vickrey auctions work? Why do experienced ebayers snipe? When should a seller set a secret reserve? Why is ebay a second-price instead of first-price auction? Why does ebay post the second highest bid and not the highest one? These answers and much more are crisply explained and supported by real-world and laboratory experiments. I opened the book knowing next to nothing about auctions and ebay (other than as a participants), and now I feel that I understand a great deal.

Steiglitz begins in Chapter 1 with classic auctions, including English and Vickery. He explains the theory underlying each auction, including the seminal result that bidders should be truthful in a second-price auction such as Vickery or English (with a few caveats). Chapter 2 motivates ebay as a natural evolution of the English auction where bidders participate over time, with a fixed deadline. Chapter 3 analyzes real bidding histories on ebay and other experimental results. He explains when practice agrees with the theory, but also when it doesn't on account of human behavior. It also explains the benefits of sniping. Chapter 4 explains why ebay is not a first-price auction; Chapter 5 discusses strategies for the seller, including how to set the opening bid and secret reserve; Chapter 6 discusses strategies for the bidder, including how much to bid and when. Chapter 7 describes various ways that participants cheat and the theory underlying it.

The theory is inherently mathematical, but Steiglitz does a masterful job of replacing the math with easy-to-understand intuition in the main text and deferring the technical details to the appendices. That being said, the appendices are definitely a worthwhile read if you remember single variable calculus. The theory is extremely elegant. Appendix A treats the class Vickrey results; Appendices B and C cover various extensions. Appendix D describes a number of experimental results. Numerous references are provided for further study.

One of the most charming features of the book is the author's conversational tone and his personal anecdotes, both as an avid coin collector and as a professor who performs classroom experiments. For example, Steiglitz illustrates the "winner's curse" via a classroom experiment where he auctions off a jar of nickels to the highest bidder.

Good read

This is a good book and I thought it was entertaining. Some may find it a bit dry because it is written more like a text book but it does have some interesting information, some interesting stories, and it has a lot of math in the back. We all love math right? The math is just for reference and is in the appenedix, it was a good book I thought. However, it was not so much about trading safely on ebay, it was more about how real life auction rings fix prices, some statistical analysis of online auctions etc.

This is a good book but if you are looking for something that explains ebay fraud and how to avoid it, look for Scams and Scoundrels, it describes more of what I thought this book would be about. While this is good, it does not have the information on identifying fraud auctions, fraud sellers, or how to protect yourself from ebay scams like Scams and Scoundrels does. Get them both, they are both good, just different takes on ebay criminals.

Enthralling. It gets better as it goes on.

I've never liked auctions, but that has not reduced the interest of this book in any way. It gives clear and engaging explanations of how different auctions work, both in theory and in practice. Special attention is given to eBay of course, and why it works the way it does.

The main text discusses strategies and the effects of different auction rules without resorting to any math, allowing the reader to gain an excellent grasp of the issues without concentrating on technical details. But the underlying theory is not shortchanged in any way by this, since the math is contained in substantial appendices, where it is laid out with complete, easy-to-understand explanations.

I highly reccommend this book both as an introduction to eBay, and to auction theory. For me, it's both.
