A handy comprehensive book

I believe this is a kind of book that everyone involved in water resources engineering and management must have. It covers all the important topics in a single handy source. I, however, do not recommend it if you are looking for detailed examples. It does include good examples with solutions but it should be better used as a reference and handbook.

Father Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalene lays out clearly the steps in Saint Teresa Margaret's spiritual biography and how she developed her deep attachment to love for God, by using classic Carmelite doctrine about growth in the spiritual life.

Teresa Margaret Redi was an Italian daughter of Saint Teresa of Jesus who lived in the eighteenth century (1747-1770). Like Saints Therese of Lisieux and Teresa de los Andes after her, her life in Carmel was brief. Her canonization came early in the last century (1934) and only now are we coming to appreciate better the spiritual legacy she left behind. This summary study by a noted spiritual theologian is a useful companion to the fuller biography of Margaret Rowe, God is Love: Saint Teresa Margaret, Her Life (ICS Publications, 2003).

The translator was Editor of Spiritual Life Magazine when he issued this work for Spiritual Life press originally in 1965.

A good companion to the biography of this Saint

A good companion book to read after her biography. I loved both very much. I didn't know much about this saint who is very similar to St. Therese, The Little Flower, in her spirituality and heroic love and virtue.

A short, pleasant book about a saint that's easy to love

I finished this as part of my Carmelite reading.

St. Teresa Margaret Redi was a Carmelite captivated by the love of God. She had a profound mystical experience that lasted about 3 days in which she felt intimately connected to God. After that was an extremely painful period of spiritual dryness where she felt that she could not love God to the degree that she wanted or that He deserved. She died at the age of 22. She was extremely anxious to experience union with God in heaven.

This is a very short, nice book. At a mere 92 pages, it was a nice distraction from Sister Faustina's diary which I've been reading for about a year ;) St. Teresa Margaret is a favorite saint among Discalced Carmelites, and it's easy to see why.

A book kids ages 10 and up might enjoy

I have mixed feelings about this title. I disliked the lack of character development in the introduction of this story and found it very hard to connect to any of the characters. I couldn't even remember the name or gender of the main character for the first 30 pages! I enjoyed the premise of the story, and all of the action that took place once the kids are on the run in the ocean was pretty entertaining. However, it feels like not much ever happens besides the constant fighting off sharks and various government nasties. I would have enjoyed this story more if there had been more character development, intriguing plot points, humor, or even some introspection throughout the book. And don't even get me started on this story's almost non-existent climax and conclusion. The characters do nothing but swim until the last chapter, where they briefly meet other mutant kids who bully them- then they arrive at the colony they've been trying to reach and the book is over. No resolution between the two groups of fish kids, no happy reunion between father and daughter- there's not even an intriguing cliff hanger to make sense of why the book just ends. After all of the build up for this dystopian world, I felt that there needed to be more of a conclusion- even if the author is planning on writing a sequel.

All of that being said, I do think that kids ages 10 and up would enjoy this book (and would likely be less critical that I am). There is sharks, dolphins, lots of adventure, and a complete lack of adults- what more could a kid ask for?

Protected by her loyal dolphins, shy Nere leads the rest on a perilous journey to her father's new colony. Fighting off government divers, sharks and giant squid, can Nere and her companions learn to trust each other before their dangerous new world destroys them?

What I Liked:

I was not sure what I was expecting from this book, but I know for a fact that I did not realize it was a Middle Grade novel! I love Middle Grade, and I am really glad I got the chance to read this book. I believe it is my first Middle Grade read of the year.

Anyway. The concept of this book was very interesting! I haven't read many books that deal with an underwater setting, and I thought that Ms. Holyoke did an excellent job of describing the ocean and underwater. I was blown away by the depth of her knowledge of the ocean (no pun intended), and how she went from talking about one type of fish to another with ease. It was clear to me that Ms. Holyoke had a vast knowledge of the underwater world, and that she did her research well. I have to say, that is my favorite thing about this entire book - the description of below the surface, and the use of many different fish species and other ocean-related things that added to the authenticity of this novel.

The novel is set in a futuristic time. In this novel, the world has been heating up drastically due to global warming, and there is garbage everywhere, and the Marines basically own the ocean. I didn't get a good feel for what was going on above the surface, because the majority of the book is spent underwater. But I thought that it was awesome that Ms. Holyoke used an environmental problem to get her novel going (because I'm all about the environment, as an environmental engineering major).

So Nere (the protagonist) and a bunch of other kids have been subjected to change from land-loving humans to sea-loving humans. Nere's parents perfected some sort of shot that made Nere and two other kids from Nere's island able to survive underwater. Nere and the other two kids meet up with other kids from other areas of the world, and they all must swim across the sea to meet Nere's father in an underwater community.

The romance threw me off. It wasn't that I was torn between two guys - because Nere wasn't torn between two guys (though there was the presence of two guys). I liked the obvious guy well enough, but his predicament at the end... I didn't really buy it. I won't spoil anything, but I was not impressed with the male love interest at the end of the book.

The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, and the author did say she had another book written. Hopefully that book takes care of the cliffhanger!

What I Did Not Like:

It's not to say that I didn't like this book... I just didn't love it. I didn't feel impressed at the end of the book, despite my fascination with the overall idea of the story. And there were little things that bothered me throughout the book.

For one, I seriously thought this book was a Young Adult book (for older teens, I suppose) for a good portion of the book, because Nere's voice and actions are pretty developed. I guess that can be seen as a good thing, that she's mature, but it just didn't make sense when I found out her age. She didn't act like an adolescent. So I was confused about that.

And you already know that I can't stand the love interest's decision at the end of the story. Why can't he just run away? What's so hard about swimming away? I hope I didn't spoil anything - but you all probably have no idea what I'm talking about.

I also didn't really see a climax in this book. It just kept going and going (which was really boring), and there would be a problem pretty often (like, sharks, or the Marines), but I didn't see a ton of buildup, and then the "climax" wasn't really a climax. And getting to the end took some effort, because I felt like the story just drifted on and on for a sizable percentage of the story.

And the cliffhanger ending. I was a tad bit irritated with it, and I have half a mind not to read the next book (if it gets picked up by Disney-Hyperion), because I don't really care to see where this story is going.

Would I Recommend It:

If you liked Middle Grade, yes! Go for it! You might enjoy it. If you're a Young Adult fan, then probably not. I'm glad I got the chance to read this one, but if it weren't for the tour, I probably wouldn't have picked it up.

Awesome book

Love love love it! Fantastic characters, wonderful plot - my middle schoolers are going to live this book -, I can't wait for the next - soon please!

Update - my daughter loves it! Several of her friends have read it now too - consensus is : much better than twilight (we like characters who know, yes you are worthy) much better than hunger games, love the under water world - so interesting! Oh, and we really want to see Cam in book two!

Ideal for the professional-level natural science writer

I work as a scientific editor and teach social scientific and natural scientific writing to graduate students, post-docs, and professionals who do not speak English as a native language. As per a one-star comment previously posted, I agree, this is NOT an ideal resource for the first-time scientific writer, or for someone looking for more general guidance; it's very high level, and really focused on the natural sciences. However, if you are, for example, a non-native English speaker who is publishing in the natural sciences, or teaching writing to this population, I really think this is the absolute best book on the market. The exercises are very thoughtful, and it covers all parts of the professional-level writing process, with an emphasis on the needs of non-native speakers.

Dave does NOT say that the stock market has made 12%, he says he has MUTUAL FUNDS that have AVERAGED 12% since their inception in 1934... do a search and look it up yourself. It actually 11.8 or something like that. Sometimes people hear what they want to hear and not what someone else SAID.

Not appropriate for Schools

I am a high school teacher. Our school recently began a personal finance class - using this text as the foundation for the class.

When I thumbed through the book, I was really disappointed. I am a big Dave Ramsey fan in my personal life. Debt is dumb, buy what you can pay for, etc. However, I don't think that his dogmatic message of 'my way or the highway' is appropriate for a school curriculum. Let me be more specific:

1) Dave is a proud Christian, which I respect. However, I didn't like that, in his chapter about saving, he puts giving as the first thing you should do with your money. This isn't necessarily wrong, but it shouldn't be a textbook answer in a public school. Giving should certainly be mentioned as a worthwhile option, but Dave's personal values are being forced into the classroom here.

2) Dave likes to say that the stock market, over a long period, has reliably returned an average of 12% per year. First of all, I challenge anybody to give me proof of that. 9 or 10% I can believe, but 12? Although these are only a few percentage points apart, they make an enormous difference when compounded over 30 or 40 years. Even worse, Dave NEVER mentions the toll that inflation will take on that money over time. If inflation averages 3%, suddenly that 12 becomes 9 and that 10 becomes 7. So, when he maps out the effect of investing for the high school student and lures them in with 12% returns, A) he is being unrealistic about the 12%, and B) he doesn't say boo about inflation.

Dave has done great things for peoples' attitudes about personal finance. I am an avid listener that believes he does more good than harm. However, he doesn't tell the whole story. Those that are ignorant about his factual omissions have only themselves to blame for not doing their own research. Yet, when it comes to choosing a text for public schools, we have to do a better job of examining the messages that are sent to our young people.

Underwhelming

I loved the first two in this series. They had some editorial flaws and were rough around the edges, but I liked the story. This one was not nearly as good. It didn't seem like anything really happened in the plot, and the action that did occur was forced. There wasn't proper character or plot development. It's also clear that this book's main purpose was to provide character development and transition into the next book in the series. I read the whole thing for the sake of the first two, but this book doesn't make me very excited for the next one in the series...

Things are getting tense in Chardonia

I've read all the books in this series, and loved them. This was no exception. Politically things are getting tense between Chardonia and the surrounding countries, and we get to see this world from the perspective of a woman who was raised in a very different society. Now she's frustrated and struggling to help the people she loves find freedom.

Fantastic read. Definitely a great next book, and I'm really looking forward to another.

Love & the struggle for freedom

After the third book all these characters have become family...you feel their pain, rejoice their joys, which are few and far between. What more can these poor people in Chardonia go through...

This book is Waverly's ... Her struggles in helping the people Chardonia, and her would be love. And when it comes to her love one should remember hate is not the opposite of love, but indifference is.

As I said love the characters, they're believable. I love the storyline and it kept my interest.

How all the characters have grown since Mine To Tarnish, book 1 of the series. The strength of the ladies are amazing, considering they're treated worse than pets (and has anyone notice there's no cats and dogs in the books).

Spoiler would let you know how the do with the rebellion & what happens with Waverly's and her love....and not everyone makes it out of this book alive and there's a lot of things left to figure out.

And if took three books but Serena & the girls' mom has a name.
