Back way back when there were East Coast types that placed a high premium on what the English would call the glory of amateurism. So slip on that lime sports jacket and checked pink pants combo your grandpa used to wear, pour yourself a cocktail and meander out by the pool for some light evening conversation. Full of classic anecdotes like the one where two golfers are driving cross country and the one riding shotgun has a driver in his hand. Sometimes when they stop at a crossroads he likes to get out and take a few swings. Well out he gets one time and the driver doesn't notice, just takes off for about hundred clicks before he turns back.......
it should have been me
This is not a "how to do" book but an insight into the world of golf as seen through the eyes, or shall I say words, of George Plimpton. It's a great read, and as of this writing, I'm almost half way through.I am enjoying this book, and as a new golfer, I am pleased to realize my errors are not mine alone. If you like and hate golf this is the book for you. Read it.
Good read for the golf fan and sports fans in general
Fun read.
Great read
First off the story is about an older time than 2016 when I am writing this review. Basic premise is Plimpton, who has written some similar stuff and also made a film in which he acted out the premise instead of writing about it) joins the pro tour, in amateur status, as a 18 handicap golfer. He starts off with an explanation of the mind scenario, which is pretty bazar, he goes through before each stroke and how that has limited him in bettering his performance. The rest of the book is comprised of stories of his experiences on the tour intermixed with his own ideas about golfing and golfers (both pros and amateurs). Plimpton also gives a very good understanding of what it means to be a pro from how they look at life, the associated costs with participating on the tour, to the things they think about while playing. As a bonus he also covers the same ground for being a pro tour caddie.Where the book is dated is in the names of the players on the circuit. Though you won't find any modern names mentioned, most of the pros names are ones that anyone who knows a bit about golf history will recognize. What is interesting about this book is following Plimpton's attempt to work through his issues. I enjoyed how he covered all if the books he was reading, especially since they were mostly golf theory and philosophy compared to self help and technique.Though there was a great deal in the story about mindset and the issues that arise in your head that affect your game and stroke, and though he did discuss the importance of having a positive attitude, what he never looked at or tried to address was his constant apologizing for his bad shots to the other golfers in the foursomes he played in.The writing is lively and kept my interest, while the read was fast.
First read this delightful book about twenty years ago; it still has the power to make me laugh out loud as I re-read it today, even though my golf game has not improved. George Plimpton had such a great, light-hearted attitude towards sports, which seems sadly lacking among today's deadly-serious sports pundits. The Bogey Man makes this duffer feel mildly proud to belong to a group, ever-hopeful of making that big breakthrough before we start a round, who can maintain our sense of humor once disaster strikes when we actually start playing.
