Too many incorrect answers in the back of the book

There are far too many incorrect answers in the back of the book and, in at least once case, misnumbered problems that don't match up with the back of the book. Frustrating, particularly when trying to figure out why something was "wrong" that really wasn't. I'm tempted to write McGraw-Hill, but it's easier to just not buy any more of its workbooks.

About the Author
Pertti Alasuutari is a sociologist, cultural studies scholar, paterfamilias and a highly significant figure in the development of both Finnish and international qualitative research.� His career has gone from strength to strength as regards advancement in Finnish academia, as witnessed by some twenty books, and numerous articles in both Finnish and foreign journals.

Yet Professor Alasuutari insists that he did not consciously choose the career of a sociologist.

Professor Alasuutari completed his school education in Rovaniemi, Lapland in 1975 and went to study technology at the University of Oulu.� But not for long.� In 1977 he dropped out and began to dream of becoming a journalist, in the meantime doing supply teaching.
"In summer I studied journalism at summer university in Lapland and began my military service"

His days in the army driving a desk led him to another state agency.� In autumn 1978 the train from the north arrived in Tampere with the 22-year-old on board.� He had gained admission to study sociology.

"For the first year I only studied journalism, and didn't even set foot in the Department of Sociology," grins Professor Alasuutari.

Career development

In 1983 the Westermarck Society awarded a prize for a master's thesis to the youthful Alasuutari.� The thesis was entitled "The Realm of Male Freedom".� The ethnographic approach was to describe the alcohol culture of a group of men patronizing a suburban pub.


Leonard Bickman, Ph.D., is Professor of Psychology, Psychiatry and Public Policy. He is director of the Center for Evaluation and Program Improvement and Associate Dean for Research at Peabody College. He earned his Ph.D. in psychology (social) from the City University of New York, his master's degree in experimental psychopathology from Columbia University and his bachelor's from the City College of New York. Professor Bickman is a nationally recognized leader in program evaluation and mental healthservices research on children and adolescents. He has published more than 15 books and monographs and 180 articles and chapters and has been principal investigator on over 25 major grants from several agencies. He is co-editor of the Applied Research Methods Series published by Sage Publications since 1980. He is also co-editor of the Handbook of Applied Social Research and is collaborating on a new International Handbook of Social Research. He is the co-author of the very popular book Applied Research Design: A Practical Guide.


Julia Brannen is Professor of Sociology of the Family at the Thomas Coram Research Unit, Institute of Education, University of London. She has carried out research in Britian and Europe for 35 years on families, children and young people, intergenerational relations and work-life issues. She has a special interest in methodology including mixed methods, cross-national research and biographical methods. Co-founder of The International Journal of Social Research she co-edited the journal for 17 years. Author of 17 books including Mixing Methods: Qualitative and Quantitave Research (Aldershot Gower 1992) and numerous articles on methodology, more recently she co-edited The SAGE Handbook of Social Research Methods (2008) and has contributed to The SAGE Handbook of Mixed Methods (2010.)

About the Author
Karen K. Kirst-Ashman, BSW, MSSW, and PhD, was a full professor and a former chairperson in the Social Work Department at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where she taught for 28 years. She is certified as a licensed clinical social worker in the state of Wisconsin and has worked as a practitioner and administrator in child welfare and mental health agencies. She received the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Excellence in Teaching Award in 1986 and its Outstanding Teaching Award in 2007. She has been a member of the board of directors of the Council on Social Work Education in addition to being an accreditation site visitor, and is a current member of BPD and NASW. She has served on the editorial board of Affilia: Journal of Women and Social Work, and as a consulting editor for many social work journals, including the Journal of Social Work Education. She is the author of numerous publications, articles, and reviews concerning social work and women's issues. Other books she has authored or coauthored include INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL WORK AND SOCIAL WELFARE: CRITICAL THINKING PERSPECTIVES (5th ed); HUMAN BEHAVIOR IN THE MACRO SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT: AN EMPOWERMENT APPROACH TO UNDERSTANDING COMMUNITIES, ORGANIZATION, AND GROUPS (4th ed); GENERALIST PRACTICE WITH ORGANIZATIONS AND COMMUNITIES (5th ed); THE MACRO SKILLS WORKBOOK (2nd ed); and UNDERSTANDING GENERALIST PRACTICE (8th ed).

Grafton H. Hull, Jr. (BS, MSW, PhD) has taught at Fort Knox Community College, Morningside College, the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Missouri State University, Indiana University Northwest, and, most recently, the University of Utah. He has been a faculty member, department chair, program director, director of a school of social work, and Special Assistant to the Senior Vice President for Accreditation. Among other professional activities, he has served on the CSWE Board of Directors, Commission on Accreditation, Nominations Committee, and as a President of the Association of Baccalaureate Social Work Program Directors (BPD). Dr. Hull has been a consultant to over 50 social work programs in the U.S. and Canada and a member of the editorial board or consulting editor for several journals. He is the co-author of seven texts and numerous articles in social work journals. Hull's honors include the Mary Shields McPhee Memorial Award for Faculty Excellence in Research (Utah), Significant Lifetime Achievement Award (BPD), Social Work Educator of the Year (Wisconsin CSWE), and President's Medal of Honor (BPD). His biography is listed in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA and WHO'S WHO IN THE WORLD.

Henry Beard's humor really tickles my funny bone

Zen for Cats is a quick read, something you'll pick up from time to time and flip through again. If you're a cat owner, I don't doubt you'll find Beard's witty observations hilarious. The illustrations are cute, but it's mostly the very dry humor in the text that makes me laugh out loud. This book is worth owning -- you'll want to refer to it again and again.

This book was quite cute, however, I expected a little more out of it. It's one of those books thay you can read in 10 or 15 minutes - not worth the money unless you're getting it as a gift or you just have money to burn. Pick it up in the library or just read it in Borders.

Jeff Horn is Associate Professor of History at Manhattan College and the author of three books, including The Path Not Taken: French Industrialization in the Age of Revolution, 1750-1839 (MIT Press, 2006). Leonard N. Rosenband is Professor of History at Utah State University and the author of Papermaking in Eighteenth-Century France: Management, Labor, and Revolution at the Montgolfier Mill, 1761-1805. Merritt Roe Smith is Cutten Professor of the History of Technology at MIT and the author or editor of six books, most recently Inventing America: A History of the United States.

Leonard N. Rosenband is Professor of History at Utah State University and the author of Papermaking in Eighteenth-Century France: Management, Labor, and Revolution at the Montgolfier Mill, 1761-1805.
