The Table Of Contents Tells the Whole Story!

I'm going to start with a disclaimer, I wrote one of the articles in the Belly Dance Reader, but I'm not here to toot my own horn. Rather, I'd like to share with you my delight and amazement at the quality and scope of this book. I just got my copy, and it occurs to me that from the description above, you can't really make the most informed decision about purchasing The Belly Dance Reader. But rather than tell you how much I love it, I thought I would give you something even better - the Table of Contents! Just one quick skim, and you will see that this book has an amazing collection of authors from academics to working professionals, this book has a little something-something for every belly dance enthusiast. A good collection of articles by dancers who know their stuff!

The book contains lots of what I wanted, which is, research and strong opinions by folks who have earned the right to have an opinion. Too many of the existing belly dance magazines are little more than belly-dance versions of People magazine, predictably featuring the dancer-du-jour and then filling the rest of the pages with bits of diluted information and rambling articles on topics that have been recycled for decades. This book is more like the late lamented Habibi and Arabesque magazines, capturing the insights and enthusiasms of articulate people who are Names in their field. You won't be bored. I suggest you buy it.

Review for "The Belly Dance Reader" from the editors of Gilded Serpent

For anyone at all interested in the art of belly dance, "The Belly Dance Reader" from the editors of the Gilded Serpent, will enthuse and educate. Its collection of articles, written in part, by many Bay Area dancers, are geared towards the novice, but has valuable insight for both advanced and professionals as well. It offers a variety of articles addressing belly dance basics, such as costuming, make up, and working with a live band, to more educative topics, such as, origins and styles of belly dance, their evolutions, and important discussions about depicting cultures and ethnic groups accurately. Most of the articles are very accessible to the average reader via first person accounts, but this great source also easily forays into a more collegiate realm. With little in the way of media coverage for belly dance, this book is a highly valuable resource. One can gain great knowledge from another dancer's experiences, and that is one of the many great tools offered here. With this in mind, anything written by Najia Marlyz is a delight, and in this reader she has two fabulous articles. "Welcome to Belly Dance!", by Marlyz opens the discussion of belly dance and provides a compelling overview of the subject. Her approach is serious yet comedic, and this I find refreshing. Her article "Are the Stars Out Tonight" is a no no nonsense discussion of music for your "gig", as well as your expectations as a dancer, (will you be paid to dance in the background, or are you a star performer?) and how to achieve your goals.
The article "The Teacher-Student Relationship, A Psychological Point of View", helps us recognize good and bad teacher-student relationships and discusses the Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), which to sum it up, teaches "just a little bit beyond what the student can already do" so that they may one day be autonomous in their dance careers. As a dancer who's taken classes from many teachers, it is true that finding the best fit will ensure growth in your dance. You want to be praised for your abilities, but also pushed to to better, or you will not feel excited about what you are learning. Conversely, having to be a clone of your teacher only ends in disharmoney. Another poignant article entitled "It Ain't Easy Being the Crone" will strike a chord with many. It discusses one woman journey as a praised dancer to one who has been forgotten. I think that the desire to be a beloved dancer is a dream of many, whether you are professional or not and it was touching to read about this personal experience. In addition to figuring the accuracy, reliability, and validity of source material,"Reading Like a Researcher" discusses how dancers passionate about their art can go beyond dance training and learn"about the cultures, history and evolution of their art...". An article by Brigid Kelly discusses "Latent Orientalism" a phrase coined by Palestinian critic Edward Said in 1978, that reveals how the West's historical "othering" of Arab cultures "...can be used to feed the racism at the discourse's heart". This is an eye-opening article that must be read! The fabulous article by Princess Farhana offers a valuable discussion of vintage costumes and their care. Many more articles worth reading are to be found within this well-organized three-hundred page reader that will indulge, inspire and educate you about the art and culture of belly dance in America and beyond.

Not the best, not the worst book on the subject. It is a little difficult to get through, although I have been trying. It is still hard to beat "Whack on the Side of the Head" -- and the Whack Pack.

Dr Razani is the man

Dr Razani is the man! I'm a current med student and this book, along with syncitiabeta.com are the best review resources I've come across. He explains things clearly without getting bogged down in extraneous detail. Most importantly he frames facts and concepts in their broader contexts. It's a welcome change from many review resources which emphasize memorizing details without making the connections that lead to understanding.

The Defiance

When I first started reading this book I wasn't sure about it, it's a book about young people, teenagers, something I normally wouldn't read. It did not take me long to realize that this book is about so much more. It's about people, their struggles, their attempts to find meaning in lives that seemed too difficult to continue at times. This is a beautifully written book of the journey of a teenage girl who's feeling of hopelessness comes through and who ultimately decide to take her grandfather's boat and return to where her mother is and where her friends are. She ends up with a stowaway, accidentally so, and on this dangerous journey the two of them learn so much about their strength, that they have value, that they can realize their dreams, and how to survive the world they live in. This is a wonderful book and I highly recommend it.

Well Worth A Read

I have read everything the author writes and this is a very different book for SE Smith. It was clear in the abstract that this was different from what the author usually pens and it was. I don't usually care for YA books but this book was about character development for people trying to find their way in life. Very few people maturate at the level and speed these young adults do. Even the minor characters experience growth. I read the first half when I first bought the book and it quickly captured my interest. It was so good I did something I have never done - I put it aside for almost a month because I didn't want it to be over. I am thrilled to discover there will be another book. The true reason the book is fabulous is because SE Smith is a master of the written word. What a wordsmith! I highly recommend this book.

I have read most of se smiths books. And normally I absolutely love them. This one wasn't a bad book, it was just really different than anything I have read from her. I would give it 3 1/2 stars. Not her best but still a decent read.

The dancer/choreographer draws heavily on her personal experiences to guide readers into cultivating habits that give birth to success. In addition, she recounts the experiences of artists from other disciplines, including painting and cinematography. Vignettes from the lives of people such as Mozart underline the fact that even geniuses work hard to realize the fruits of their labor. A personable tone is carried throughout the book, and within the text is a gold mine of advice. Tharp not only promotes tried-and-true habits, but also encourages readers to dig deep within themselves and come up with their own answers. Most sections conclude with exercises; they are fun and almost seamlessly bring home the author's main points. The black-and-white illustrations and photos are few in number. Great to hear about the process, not so great as a practical guide

When I decided to read The Creative Habit right after The War of Art, I have to admit I gave myself a great big pat on the back. The War of Art was great in helping artists recognize & identify where & why Resistance stops you from doing That Creative Thing You Do, but the phrase "A Practical Guide" at the bottom of the cover of The Creative Habit made me think that it would address the "how." Sure, The War of Art really hit home with that beloved phrase, "Just do it (Every day. No matter what)," & while that's simplistic & powerful in so many ways, the artist & life coach in me wanted more. I was hoping The Creative Habit would deliver it, and it did - to a point.

The Creative Habit is divided into chapters that formulate a foundation for Tharp (Spine, Memory, Accidents, etc). She delves into personal anecdotes & advice, always followed by a suggestion of different exercises to further you along in your discovery & personal interpretation of that idea. For example, Twyla speaks often of "scratching", or the process of "digging through everything to find something" - an idea, an image, anything that'll turn into a tangible idea that'll spark your creative endeavor. One of the most memorable exercises comes at the end of the chapter, where she encourages the reader to take a handful of coins in any number & denomination & toss them onto a table to see how they fall, & then rearrange them into a pattern again & again & again, like "a musical chord resolving." I can see how it helps her, a world-renowed choreographer, come up with new configurations for her dancers. I can see, also, how it helps me, a creative person looking for a new perspective, to see infinite possibilities in something that I usually wouldn't look twice at.

Tharp lays it out on the table (i.e. "Somebody's done this before!") & then knocks it down (i.e. "Honey, it's all been done before. Get over yourself"). She also speaks of the joy of planning (not overplanning!) & imperfection, how to determine if you're in a rut, how to keep your groove going & how to deal with failure. Her advice is comforting & inspiring, all the while giving me new perspective & allowing me to feel that I wasn't alone. It's no mistake that rarely do 2 pages flip by that aren't marked by my highlighter.

I mentioned to someone (I forget who, & it's bothering me!) a while ago that I was reading the book, & she mentioned that it's tough to get through it as someone who is more of a Renaissance Soul, & is unable and/or unwilling to just throw themselves into their work. Tharp talks often about how she'll rid herself of all distractions (no music! no clocks! no numbers (yes, really - numbers)! no speaking!) & just live, breathe, think, talk & think the gym & the rehearsal studio - for weeks. She also encourages artists to "pick" a talent if they excel at more than one, as it's a curse to have a 50% chance of being wrong about their true calling. The life coach & Renaissance Soul in me super dislikes this sentiment, but I understand her stance if you're someone that wants to Master & Excel in their field - & is willing & able to chuck the rest of Life.

That said, here are my favorite exercises from the book, just waiting for journaling!:

Tharp poses 33 questions for you to answer in Your Creative Autobiography. Get out your journal & answer some of my faves (seriously - you'll totally want to):
What is the first creative moment you remember? Was anyone there to witness or appreciate it?
What is the best idea you've ever had? What made it great in your mind?
What is your creative ambition? What are the obstacles to this ambition? What are the vital steps to this ambition?
What are your habits? What patters do you repeat?
What do you & your role models have in common?
At what moments do you feel your reach exceed your grasp?
When you work, do you love the process or the result?
Pick a new name. What would you want it to say about you? What would it be? Why?
Take a field trip. Give a walk into purpose by saying that you won't return home until you have something inspiring in your hand, whether it's visual, intellectual or tangible.
For one day, be completely contrary. Pick a fight with everything you do - your wake-up routine, your rituals, your habits, your first creative impulse.
Figure out Your Perfect World. What are the rules & conditions? What's essential & what can be compromised on? Who is with you & what's surrounding you?

Bottom Line? The Creative Habit is a great book from a world-renowned artist who divulges her secrets in creating a new piece, building on it, sticking with it (both the piece as a singular unit & the career as a whole), & climbing the artistic ladder. But if you're looking for an interactive program of sorts, or something that's really gonna kick your ass into gear, I'd take a pass.

More complex than the title and worth your time

Exactly. This is America's foremost choreographer digging deep to dissect her life and her work practices, trying to distill what it is that has kept her productive and relevant throughout a professional career now at the 40-year mark. It is the definitive book on the subject and has all of the science references to back up the information. The 563 pages of this book will answer most anyone's questions on the subject.

Pretty and makes bible look lovely 💘

I've been using my Bible more recently and had originally purchased Majestic Bible Tabs Lavender. I had great success with those and wanted to get more tabs to put in the two other Bibles I own. I ended up purchasing these rose nouveau tabs, along with Majestic Traditional Gold-Edged Bible Tabs.These tabs are perfect for bigger Bibles and the one I put these in measures about 9 1/2 inches tall. This package of tabs contains 72 foil-edged tabs and the books of the Bible are printed on both sides. The tabs are pink with a floral design on them and the rose-color foil edges add a beautiful accent. Each tab measures about one inch wide by 1/4 inch high. There are a total of six sheets of tabs for the books in the Old and New Testaments, along with some extra tabs for Notes, Special, Concordance, Index, Old and New Testaments, Maps, and Life Verse. Please note, these tabs won't work well for Catholic Bibles since they don't contain blank tabs for the additional books in that Bible. If you have a Catholic Bible, I'd recommend purchasing Majestic Traditional Gold-Edged Bible Tabs. I have those as well for one of my Bibles and they are the same as these, just a gold color. There are detailed instructions and a guide included in this package to help you attach the tabs. These tabs are made in China.I've now successfully attached three sets of these tabs, in different colors, and here are some tips I've discovered:- I definitely wouldn't rush since these tabs are like stickers and, once they are fully stuck on the thin Bible pages, they may be difficult to fix. Before you attach both clear sticky pieces, you MAY be able to gently remove them and adjust as necessary. I've been able to do this with no problems.- When you start a new sheet of tabs, fold along the foil edges BEFORE removing the tabs and attaching them. This will make it easier to fold them over when you attach them.- I've found it's easiest to pull the tabs off the sheet by peeling the colored part off first instead of the clear parts. This will help prevent the tabs from ripping.- Use the guide to help you attach the tabs and, if you ever forget which tab number you are on (e.g. 4,5,6...), just look back at your previous tab and count down to find which number you will use next.- The tabs will always be attached to the pages on the right side, regardless of where the beginning of the book starts. Sometimes my tabs are attached to the title page and sometimes they are on the page with the first couple of chapters.- If your Bible contains words that go to the edges of the pages, don't worry about these tabs covering them up. The only parts that are actually attached to the pages are the clear sticky tabs so you can still easily read your Bible.- After you've attached a tab and it looks straight enough, carefully make sure there is only one page attached and fold over the tab to the other side of the page. Once the tabs are in place, I always press them firmly down.- When I'm opening my Bible using these tabs, I don't pull on the tabs themselves. Instead, I find the book I want, slide my finger in, and open my Bible that way.I've now applied three sets of these tabs and they have all worked well for me! I love the colors and design choices available since everyone has different personalities. I feel these are very affordable and easy to apply, once you get the hang of it. It generally takes me about an hour to apply all of my tabs and I am pleased with the results. These tabs make reading my Bible easier, more efficient, and fun! If you are looking for tabs for your Bible, these are a great option. They won't work for Catholic Bibles but there are some options for those too. I highly recommend these tabs!

Haven't had them in my bible for a month and the shiny pink foil is already scraping off. Can't imagine how they will look after a few more months.

Very pretty... but the pink foil edge scrapes off way too easily. Someone else wrote a review saying this, but I assumed that they were probably taking it many places and stuffing it in a bag or something. I was wrong. I took my brand new bible with these brand new tabs to church for the first time today and the foil has already rubbed off a little on some of the tabs. This kills me because I am a perfectionist and like to keep my things looking nice and new for as long as possible. I was very careful with my bible and it still happened on DAY ONE!They look so nice when they are new though. If I had known, I think I would've found a way to laminate the edges.

These tabs are gorgeous! I love everything about them. Please note that they are not compatible with a Catholic Bible. This company does have other tabs that include the Catholic books. I called customer service and was given a refund right away so I could buy new tabs that will work. I highly recommend these tabs if you do not have a Catholic Bible.

These seem nice quality tabs. The color goes perfectly with my NIV Journal the Word women's Bible. The tabs were easy to attach using the guide. Just needs a lite touch till you are sure it's aligned to your satisfaction. I was able to gently unpeel parts if it contacted with the thin Bible pages before I was ready. Had no tearing. But I will make very clear, these are NOT to be adhered then moved. These are meant to be placed once then left on. But if you move quickly and ever-so-gently, if it attaches in a unwanted spot, you should be able to move. Very pleased and would repurchase. Ps. They have a coating on them that should protect them from ripping with normal, gentle use.

I wanted to add tabs to my new study Bible, and when I saw these, I had to get them! Beautiful pink color, shiny foil accents - what's not to love? They were pretty simple to put on, especially when I used a couple of small strips of washi tape to temporarily hold the guide on the page to keep it in place while sticking on the tab. They look great, and with reasonable care not to manhandle the pages, shouldn't rip. Definitely recommended.

I bought these to match my Bible. Pink is my favorite color and these are so pretty period very easy to put on and they are secure. The only thing I did not like was the fact that for the book of Deuteronomy it is not spelled out completely. It says Deuteron. Other than that these are wonderful and pretty and they match my Bible so well.

The Title Is Misleading

I bought this book for my daughter's ninth birthday. I was very excited to find it because of her interest in creating a show on YouTube. However, this book is not what I was looking for at all. In fact, I believe the title is misleading as the book has very little to do with YouTube. Instead it deals primarily with shooting video with equipment that is not very practical or accessible for much of the age group it proposes to target - as mentioned in a previous review. It is only in the last segment (approximately 17 pages) that sharing your video is addressed. I did give the book a couple of stars because it speaks to youth on their level and contains useful information for filmmaking if that is your primary goal. I purposely passed over many books focusing on the topic of making films but was duped into buying this manual as a result of its deceptive title. Both she and I are very disappointed and I am still looking for a book that speaks to our interest.

Making YouTube Videos (Dummies Junior)
This is a good book for kids who are just starting out making videos.
Thought it is set up for YouTube we have found some of the hints and tips good information even if not going to publish to youtube.
It is a short enough book that one will not get too overwhelmed.
We found it was rather good at not talking down to kids while at the same time not being too difficult for them to understand.
Nice basic information for them to use.
It is not too long of a book either which is another nice feature since some kids might lose interest in something if too long/hard to understand.
I do like that the author makes sure to state that if a child is under 13 they need parental help/permission to set up a youtube account.
Overall it has been a good book for us to use with our kids and help them along the way.
