I am a disabled veteran with puncturing head wound on the left side of head with prosthetic skull on the same side. I mention this because language is most affected by this type of injury on that area of the head. Am taking Modern Hebrew classes at a small liberal arts college in a degree program and have been searching for other resources/books to help supplement my learning and understanding. Being in the second semester....I wish I would have found this book in the first semester! It is that good! It is easy enough for someone like me with severe Traumatic brain Injury but enough depth and detail for a college level introductory course. I highly recommend it!

The best reference grammar for Modern Hebrew.

Such a reference book of Modern Hebrew has been needed for a long time. The only previous reference grammar in English, by Lewis Glinert, while an excellent work, is expensive, very technical, very heavy on syntax, and often outdated. This new volume is easy to use, and includes tons of useful and helpful information. It is not a comprehensive grammar with every last detail, but will still be of great value to the student of Hebrew, from the beginner to the advanced level. Recommended.

Great Resource!

When I bought the book my need was to understand and use the different verb conjugations and prepositions better. The first aim has certainly been achieved. The second not so.What the book does well is to provide a logical order for presenting the elements of grammar. It is thorough in that it gives examples of each component along with variations and exceptions. Pronunciations are aided by English transliterations. There are thorough appendices giving tables of the grammar components. What the book is not is comprehensive. That is, it does not go through every single verb and how it is used, leaving some intelligent work to be done by the user. Similarly with the prepositions, which is why I haven't yet come to grips with them.But what has gained this book full marks is simply because it is readable and it is easy to dip in and out of.

The examples are particularly helpful. The discussion of "registers" - the level of formality of language and so on - is also interesting and helpful. Bolotsky's 501 Hebrew verbs is of similar quality and usefulness. These books help to span the gap between studying Hebrew and really being able to use it. However, to get the most from this book, one must devote a good deal of effort.

This is the best book on Hebrew Grammar I have read. I read it from cover to cover, almost as a novel. The explanations and examples are very clear, the tone is fresh, the amount of subjects is huge and not at all standard. Every question I had on Hebrew grammar has been answered in this book. My level of Hebrew is intermediate I think, and I could follow all the examples very well, even though they are not simplified for a low level. So, five stars is actually not enough...

Very useful, especially if wanting to look up verb conjugations. It goes over all aspects of the grammar and is good if using it as a student in university or just for personal use.

About the Author

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Dr. Terry Dubrow obtained degrees in medical sciences from Yale University in 1980 and the UCLA School of Medicine in 1986. He completed a�residency in general surgery, became chief resident in surgery at the�Harbor-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, and completed a plastic and reconstructive fellowship�at the UCLA Medical Center in and went into private practice in 1993. He has authored more than 30 articles published in�peer-reviewed journals and has lectured extensively to professional groups in surgery. A�fellow of the American College of Surgeons, he is certified�by The American�Board of Plastic Surgery and is also a certified expert for the California Medical�Board, working extensively since 2000 as an expert in medical malpractice. He is the author of The Acne Cure and writes extensively about health and wellness.

����������� Dr. Dubrow has been showcased as the surgical expert on several television shows including Fox Network’s The Swan, where he performed and helped coordinate extensive contestant transformations, E! About the Author

Nathan Benn was born in Miami, Florida, in 1950 and graduated from the University of Miami with degrees in psychology and mass communications. Immediately thereafter he became a photographer for National Geographic magazine, where he remained for 20 years. He was the Director of Magnum Photos, Inc., the prestigious agency of documentary photographers from 2000–2002. He is a Trustee Emeritus at the George Eastman House Museum and lives with his wife, a fine arts photographer, and son in Brooklyn. Paul M. Farber is a scholar of visual and popular culture. He has a PhD in American Culture from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Farber is one of the authors of This Is the Day: The March On Washington (Getty Publications, 2013), and his work has previously appeared in Vibe and Criticism, and on NPR. He currently teaches in the Urban Studies program at the University of Pennsylvania.

I like this book--a lot. Bern's pictures are the twin to William Eggleston's color excursions in the seventies and eighties. If you like the one, you'll like the other. Clear and brisk, no color extravagance, these pictures work because they are undramatic clear-eyed views that take note of the mundane without shouting about it. Nice format, on the larger side, roughly 12 x 12.

The quality of the images is great and the photography is excellent. This book shall be in every photo enthusiast library.

This is a fabulous holiday gift for anyone in your family, kids or adults. There are images in here to entertain and delight everyone. I'd forgotten the pleasure of poring over "picture books" now that my kids are grown. It is fun to imagine and invent different back stories for the pictures in this gorgeous book.

This contains a marvelous collections of photographs from a disappearing America.

A delightful slice of pure Americana served up in photo book format. Nathan Benn worked for the National Geographic for many years and the photos here reflect the magazine's house style: technically perfect photos that say something to the reader. Fortunately this means that the more personal style of photography seen in so many art photo books over the last four decades isn't much in evidence here.The ninety-four photos in the book have been selected from about 350,000 Kodachromes that Benn had put in storage nearly twenty years ago. The great thing about the film was that it didn't fade and the colors in these photos sing out with vibrancy and clarity as if they had been processed yesterday. The pages are in four sections: North East; Heartland; Pittsburgh; Florida, each divided by a spread of life size Kodachrome slides (rather interestingly some of these are the wrong way round). All the images are a slice of life between 1972 and 1990. Almost everyday scenes though how often would you see a farrier or a bunch of Klansmen burning a cross, even back then. There is mixture of exterior and interior and a portrait or two. Virtually every one has beautiful framing and that helps to pull you into the composition.Excellent though the book is it has a slight flaw because of a lack of captions. The only captions name the place and date (and oddly set sideways in the left and right margins instead of centered under each photo) but several of them made me ask: what's going on here. Two men on page 129 both have two hats on, the front of the book essays says they are seasonal sugar-cane harvesters about to leave Miami International Airport but nothing about the two hats. Page 108 shows a selection of flat metal discs and squares of material laying on a wide ledge, who knows what they are but if the photo had appeared in the Geographic a caption would have revealed exactly what they were. An explanation, at least for some of the photos, would have made the book complete for me.The design and printing are first class, using a 250 screen brings out so much of the detail in these photos and as they were all taken by one person there is a constant color quality throughout the book. Dull book, will be returning it, depressing to even look through it.

This is a powerful book that tells an important story -- about America during the 1970s-1990s, but especially about the American Southeast. Even apart from the historic and sociologic significance of his photographs, Benn is an enormously talented photographer whose sense of color and composition is stunning. The members of our family find ourselves leafing through the book over and over again.

Murderers and torturers who slept with their siblings (and other relatives), the emperors of Rome excelled at corruption. The maniacal pedophile Tiberius Caesar (A.D. 14-37) left the corpses of his many victims to rot on the Gemonian Steps, which descended from the Capitol to the Forum, or alternatively enjoyed watching them being thrown from a cliff ("A contingent of soldiers was stationed below to whack them with oars and boat hooks just in case the fall failed to do the trick"). Many popes were no better. Not content with just rooting out Christian heretics by launching a bloody crusade against the Cathars in southern France, Innocent III (1160-1216) declared himself ruler of the world. He sacked Constantinople and massacred every Muslim he could find. I've read many of Farquhar's books, and have loved them all. This one is no exception.I've read "Behind the Palace Doors: Five Centuries of Sex, Adventure, Vice, Treachery, and Folly from Royal Britain" and was hesitant to purchase this book, as I feared it would be a repeat of the same stories. It is not. This book includes stories about the first Popes and some of the Roman Emperors, as well as stories about Spanish nobles and famous Italians (the Medici family really would be a great next book for this author to write about). Honestly, I could stand to never read about the early Popes and Roman Emperors ever again (really unseemly stuff), but I was grateful for their inclusion just to be reminded of the world we live and how we got to where we are today.Like all of this author's books, I'd recommend stopping every few chapters, and reading more about these historical figures online. It really gives a better insight into how these people fit into the overall history of our world.Overall, a great read.

This is good for people who have a 'mental block' when learning history. History from a risque perspective. . . does make the characters more interesting, at least that's what I feel . ( stuff the teachers didn't tell us ! )

The author starts off with all sorts of well known and lesser known shocking antics of royals through Europe....then he seems to run out of material and begins to discuss history without any back story. It's as if he combined two books. I suppose the conclusion is most royals behaved well.

Rulers throughout the ages have had more than their share of scandals. Although Sex with anyone and everyone was common among the men, a few royal women joined in. If you're squeamish, you might want to gloss over the death and torture sections; or at least, don't read them right before bed. The section on the Popes might not sit too well with some Catholics. The last section deals with those for whom execution was not enough.

I know this is a book about scandals, but I expected more historical context and not just moving from one salacious detail to the next. I'm sure some people would love it, but it's not for me.

I just finished reading another of this author's books for the first time and was actually impressed with the writing style and decided to try this one thinking it would be as fun and informative as Behind the Palace Doors: Five Centuries of Sex, Adventure, Vice, Treachery, and Folly from Royal Britain.The Royal Scandals was a much more shallow and tabloid style take on the information. I have only gotten through the first section and decided Im not going to read any further. There was one point about the "We are NOT amused" statement by Queen Victoria that was in this book said that it had to do with an opera. I had read in more than one place in the past that it was about a dirty joke that someone told at a dinner party so it left me wondering how well researched this book really was.If you want to experience just a licentious slant on history and aren't worried about truly learning anything...this is a good book and Im sure many will find this kind of writing humorous. Unfortunately for myself I didn't find it amusing:)If you haven't read any of this author's work before read the above mentioned book Behind the Palace Doors. I actually have found it informative and entertaining to read...Im over 85% done with it and it will get me to purchase more from this writer...too bad it was A Treasury of Royal Scandals...next time I will read the reviews better.Happy Shopping!!Update: I have read and finished this book...after the first section in my opinion it did get better so I raised it to three stars...much of the same information as in Behind the Palace Doors.

i read this book with an open mind and it brought back a lot of History that i had forgotten. If people today think Waterboarding is horrible, then they should read this book from beginning to end! It does have some humorous spots in it , which are thrown in at just the correct times to make this a great history lesson.

If you have an interest in history, and a sense of humor, you'll really like Michael Farquhar's books. He takes basic facts in history, and fills them in with more hilarious and sometimes disturbing tales. I'm not sure what's actually true and what's been rumored over many years, but who cares. It's a fun, fast read you'll pick up again and again.

Exactly what I had hoped for

I have a couple of other network programminng books but was never satisfied with them. I'm not a network geek and needed to get some basics under my belt as I needed to do some data mining on the net for work. This book renovated my confidence in my ability to learn and to implement. I had my solution up and running pretty quickly based on the info I learned from the book. Exactly what I had hoped for. I highly recommend this one.

Even before the events of last fall, Powell was well regarded by the military and civilians around the world. Now, as secretary of state during the war against terrorism, Powell's intelligence and skills as manager, negotiator and leader are even more visible. Harari, a management professor and consultant, met Powell several years ago, but wrote this book without his cooperation. The author has used Powell's own words, from his autobiography and presentations, to create a primer of Powell's leadership secrets. The book reads much like an introductory textbook, explaining key phrases, quotes, anecdotes and principles. Powell's style is somewhat unusual for a military leader. He believes in listening, not just to superiors, but to the people who serve under him; he pushes people to ask hard questions and to approach problems in creative ways; he is solution-oriented and wants answers to problems to be original, not simply tried-and-true methods. While a book by Powell himself on his leadership style would obviously have great appeal, Harari has done an admirable job of distilling the essence of Powell's leadership style. The chapter summaries ("Powell's Principles") are especially clear (e.g., "Hire on talent and values, rather than resumes"; "Don't clock hours for hours' sake"). Prior to September 11, Colin Powell was considered "odd man out" in the Bush administration and had even begun to receive criticism in certain media outlets. After the attacks, Powell stepped up and, with his calm demeanor, played a key leadership role as he has done on many previous occasions. Several biographies have been written about Powell, but this book centers on his personal leadership philosophy and is organized into 17 chapters of "leadership secrets," each one summarized into three or four of "Powell's Principles." Some of his principles are surprising, considering his conservative inclination: he likes to challenge authority and promote a clash of ideas, and he maintains an open-door policy because he believes that the higher one goes up the hierarchy, the more important it is to stay in touch with real people and real data. A key Powell trait is flexibility in action, as he does not believe in formulaic solutions but lets the situation dictate the strategy. He is, above all, a people person and seeks out those with optimism and drive. This is a "battle-tested" leadership book, and although the author has shown how to apply these principles in the corporate venue, you don't have to be a CEO to benefit from the words and wisdom of Colin Powell. Excellent leadership principles

This is not my usual kind of reading matter -- for some reason, I have never been attracted to biographies. However, this book was recommended by Bill Hybels (of the Willow Creek Global Leadership Summit, GLS) when he interviewed Powell in 2007 on his approach to leadership. The interview at the GLS was really good, and the book kind of hovered on my radar until I bought it recently.

Well, it turns out that the Powell book is really good! To be more accurate, it is not so much a biography as a leadership book based on the life and experience of Powell, who has had a remarkably successful career as a leader by any standards. In Harari's words: "The lessons in this book constitute a clear strategic, philosophical, value-based, and ethical blueprint by which Powell leads". Some of the discussion is (understandably) somewhat militaristic, but Harari does a good job of bringing the principles out.

The book distills Powell's "leadership principles" and presents them clearly and succinctly, together with examples from Harari's experience and other sources. These pithy leadership principles are memorable and direct, making this an easy book to put into practice.

A great quote from Powell himself, which sums up his leadership philosophy rather well: "Leadership is not rank, privilege, titles, or money. It is responsibility".

Recommended for anyone interested in developing their leadership skills.

A Leadership Must Read

Every year I assigned this book as a book report. Every student chose it. However, only one could read it. So this year I had everyone read it for my Leadership class. Best decision I made.

Harari describes General Powell's leadership principles in a respectful and simple manner. One learns to always listen to everyone. Walk the same route every day so people know you will. That way they will come up to General Powell and express their ideas. General Powell had a special phone line for ideas.

My students were constantly getting inspired by this book. They were learning by General Powell's example.

About the Author
Dexter Filkins has been foreign correspondent in Afghanistan and Iraq for the New York Times since 2000. He was a member of the Iraq bureau from 2003 to 2006, a Nieman fellow at Harvard in 2006, and is currently a fellow at the Carr Center for Human Rights Policy at the Kennedy School of Government. A Pulitzer Prize finalist for his work from Afghanistan in 2002, he has received numerous awards, including the George Polk awards for his coverage of the assault of Falluja in 2004, and an Overseas Press Club award.

Exceptional

Of the dozens of books written about the war in Iraq, along comes Dexter Filkins with a commentary on Iraq that blows the others away. Non-political and highly personal, Filkins goes after the day-to-day story that, through accumulation, delivers a report about the Iraqi citizenry over the years after the invasion. He captures it with style, wisdom and grace.

Americans have largely known the Iraqi war through political slants with a small degree of knowledge of the street. The author adds so much to the discourse. Who knew the depth that kidnapping played or how even going to the bathroom played with both American troops and the Iraqi people, disrupted as it was. This is a book of color and passion. I was particularly moved by a paragraph in which he relates how one would know if an Iraqi was killed by a Sunni or a Shia. The exceptional side of "The Forever War" is not only the presentation of the story but the narrative in which it is told.

Filkins has his own boots on the ground, grinding through Baghdad, Falluja and other hot spots. His book is one of remarkable courage under fire and serves to remind us of what our government simply didn't know about Iraq, or about which it didn't care. I highly recommend it.

Powerful and Moving

This will, I think, become the classic book of the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. It is non-political and consists of multiple snapshots rangng over many years, not always in chronological sequence. These are Filkins's carefully selected memories of his life as a N.Y. Times reporter on the front lines, as well as his experiences on 9/11 at ground zero.

He makes no effort to "explain" the turmoil of the Middle East, but one puts the book down with a new understanding of some of the powerful and destructive forces at play. He is respectful of the U.S. military and his sketches of the bravery of the Americans fighting against bad odds, most of them only teenagers, is very moving.

Politics don't even intrude in the brief chapter on Ahmad Chalabi, it is rather a sketch on the personality of this complex and slippery player in the power struggles of the time.

I recommend this book as a companion to the excellent "Imperial Life in the Emerald City" which documents the appaling stupidity of U.S. policy in Iraq flowing down from the top. The "Forever War" balances that with the street smarts courage of our military. Still, Filkins would, I am sure, agree that imposing "democracy" by military force guarantees a forever war.

This is a powerful book, well and clearly written, by an experienced and compassionate observer.

Ernie Pyle would be proud of this book

I happened to be in New York when Mr. Filkins was giving a reading from this book at the Strand so I stopped by to listen to him read as well as answer questions about his years in Iraq and Afghanistan. This book is probably one of the few written about the wars which does not get involved in making judgments about whether these wars are anything but "forever."
Starting with his witnessing of Taliban "justice" in Kabul in 1998, nearly 20 years after Jimmy Carter decided to start the war in Afghanistan as a trap to lure the Soviets into invading the country and create a Soviet "Vietnam", Filkins shares with us the brutality of that war and the ravages it brought to Afghanistan over a couple of decades. He is able to capture the reasons that the Taliban were reluctantly viewed by the general population as a means to end the bloodshed and blackmail which had seen millions displaced, disfigured and dead over the years. Ironically, Filkins witnessed the amputations and executions in the former soccer stadium the same year that Zbigniew Brzezinski was giving his interview with a French magazine claiming that his advice to Carter to fund the mujahedeen and thus creating "a few stirred up Muslims" was worth the price if it meant the Soviets would end their occupation of his native Poland. Filkins witnessed firsthand just how "stirred up" they became, and how decades later, they are still "stirred up."
Filkins does not get into the "who started what and when" trap in this book, but does show that decisions have consequences and "The Forever War" started long before W even thought about running for president.
If you are looking for a book that points fingers and lays blame, this is not the book for you. If you are looking for a book that shows the day-to-day reality of war, the deaths, the damage, the decisions, that people have to make in winning or surviving them, this is as good as it gets.
Filkins does devote a few pages of placing Iraq today into context with his observations in visiting the cemetery where Gertrude Bell is interred and her role in the creation of the country of Iraq after WWI, as well as his visit to the graveyard and memorial built to the memory of the 30,000 British soldiers who were members of the Mesopotamia Expeditionary Force who paid the ultimate price in liberating the country that would become Iraq from the Ottomans during WWI.
As I told him after his reading, I am sure that Ernie Pyle is smiling down on him and his courageous return to unvarnished journalism without a political agenda.

Honestly I feel like I’m pretty magnetic in my own right

Honestly I feel like I’m pretty magnetic in my own right. I have a large group of friends and I am routinely the organizer and center of attention. Even so, I learned a lot from the book. I realized that a lot of the connections I had were purely surface and that I didn’t quite know people that well outside of a group social party setting. I was also committing one of the cardinal sins by leading with “no” which probably means I wasn’t as magnetic as I thought I was. But I am learning and improving and getting back there!

A STEAL for what you’re getting

This book is like a course in itself, and I know the author is actually a social skills coach… I can’t help but wonder what he teaches in his courses to his clients if I got this much value from his book! I really liked how he was able to relate each and every principle to real life somehow and make it accessible to anyone.

I would recommend this book above all others of its type. Every single other one I’ve read is information I already knew or could find in some blog in 2 minutes. This one stands above the rest.

Great as a leisure read or a textbook

Social cues for social success. If I had one complaint about the book, it’s that the last chapter should have been first because I think it is integral to understanding social interaction and should be the first thing people learn about. But hey that’s just me I guess. It works nicely as a finisher and overview of everything already in the book to that point.
