My original purchase was the 2008 edition and with the changes going on in medicine and a broader scope of vision issues addressed, it was time to update. Peggy Wolfe does not disappoint--her story of dealing with vision loss and how to adapt continue to send a supportive message. I like the fact that she has the book printed in large print--very easy to read. She gives many useful hints for dealing with the daily problems and keeping a positive spirit. Not always easy if you happen to be the one with the loss.
Nothing new. Could find everything on the computer. Gave mine to the Goodwill.
Quite a bit of new information
I have several friends with mild to severe vision loss, and each one found the earlier edition of this book very, very helpful. Now . Peggy Wolfe’s new edition,--“Vision Lossâ€â€”offers a thoughtfully revised and fresh take on her original 2008 publication, “Macular Disease.†The new title change reflects the broader outreach and additional practical advice offered to ANYONE with vision problems.While this edition adds new and even more useful materials, it retains the uniquely valuable features evident in the first two editions--- very specific practical information (how-to-do and where-to-find), combined with the real-life experiences of the author as she deals with the daily problems encountered by anyone with vision problems. This makes a great gift to relatives or friends experiencing vision problems.The large print and glare-free heavy paper, the extensive index, many illustrations, and the listing of specific sources for finding further information – all combine to make this book a most valuable and practical tool that can inspire those who want to live like the author—who declares, “Vision loss need not deter us. ‘We can do it!’ is the message of this book.â€
This updated version is worth buying, even if you own an earlier edition. The emotional response to diagnoses is helpful if struggling to accept one's vision loss. Acceptance, gratitude and patience with oneself is emphasized. The little stores of real life situations and how to handle them is easy to relate to. The tone is warm and the organization and style (with the large print) make the book accessible to all readers, low vision or not. Also the practical tips for little chores is helpful. My mother is experiencing vision loss and she found this third edition very helpful and an improvement over the first edition.
I read Vision Loss from cover to cover recently on a coast-to-coast plane trip and am bursting with enthusiasm for the book. Though I don’t live with vision loss myself, my father-in-law has macular degeneration. I read the book hoping to understand what he must experience daily, and to discover practical suggestions that could help him live with less frustration. I was not disappointed!I especially enjoyed the personal stories, which grace Vision Loss with the author’s honesty, humor and compassion. She seemed tobe right there beside me, chatting with me in her encouraging voice, and I trusted what she told me. After reading the stories, I felt deeper compassion for my father-in-law's challenges, and I knew I'd be delivering a copy of Vision Loss to him right away.One of the many stories that especially moved me is “A Weekend Asking Strangers for Help,†about how the author accepts the invitation to attend a retreat far away from home, not knowing how she would find transportation to and from the remote location or how she would be able to find her way around a strange hotel or at the multi-level retreat center. Instead of crumpling and deciding not to go because she would need to be outgoing and assertive, she calls the director of the retreat despite her fear. The director finds a woman to give the author a ride to and from the retreat. Because of this shared ride, an energizing new friendship develops between the two women—one that in turn connects the author with yet another soon-to-be new friend, who drives her back and forth between the hotel and retreat center daily. And so the author transforms a“daunting venture, even if she had perfect vision,†into an unexpectedly enjoyable experience by making that first phone call.I empathize with the author’s difficulty in asking for help. Years ago, after having been seriously injured, I needed help. Nearly paralyzed with fear, I picked up the phone, called an acquaintance, and asked her for help doing daily tasks I couldn’t do for myself while on crutches. This carried me through much anxiety and embarrassment about not being able to “do it myself.†It led me to risk trusting another, and rewarded me with an emotionally nourishing new friendship. All of the stories in Vision Loss offer insights like this one, and they are inspiring examples of meeting personal challenges with grace and humility.Vision Loss looks and feels great, too, with smooth, heavy, non-glare paper and large, bold print. I heartily recommend it to anyone living with vision loss, either personally or by association. It's a smart, encouraging book with a lot of heart.
This is an absolutely wonderful book and perfect for anyone, at any age, who is diagnosed with a vision condition and who needs both practical tips to get through the day and a positive shot of confidence that it will be all be ok. Peggy Wolfe has an engaging writing style and she has packed the book chock-full of practical tips you can use at home, in restaurants, when traveling and more. I highly recommend this book.
