Beautiful Atlanta

This is a very scholarly book, and as such, is very well researched. The images of the homes are wonderful, and I appreciated the included plans for many of the homes. Reid's homes are classics, they are built in many of the favorite styles of the affluent. He is probably best known for his Georgian homes, that fit the beautiful northern Georgian Piedmont perfectly. If you have any interest in great residential architecture of the first half of the 20th century or just have a love for Atlanta, then you will thoroughly enjoy this book, and as the other reviewer stated, it's a perfect book to get ideas for your own home, uh, but I hope you have the requisite deep pockets.

Book shows why Neel Reid was one of greatest of the South.

The book gives history and insight on his life and follows his working history from Macon to Florida to Atlanta. His attention to detail is pointed out in many chapters and the photography along with the orginal drawings are a good touch. If your looking for some ideas or maybe a facade to copy this would be a excellent book. Most of his houses are timeless designs and the interior views and elevation views are stunning.

My (now 20-something) boys LOVED this book. We sang the song (listen to Raffi for the tune) and danced the dance when they were little. Didn't always exactly get them ready to go to sleep (!), but such delightfully fun times/memories! They asked for it every night. Now I give it to parents of little ones at baby showers. A must-have for fun parents! :-)

I read this book to my children when they were just little babes. I was so happy to have found the book again to give to them to have now that they are married so that when they have children they can read it to their little ones. Thank you Thank you for having this book available

My daughter loves books and she loves singing. So I love the Raffi books because they are the songs I grew up with. The lead in pages to this song throws me off, but she loves it and now she sings it on her own when we start to read it.

Wish this was a board book. I didn't notice until it arrived. I will wait to gift this to my grandson when he isn't chewing everything. Cute song. Love Raffi!

If you don't know Raffi and you have young children, check him out! I have a 30 year old daughter and two grandchildren now. I bought his dvd as well.

In the early Roman Empire, as Christianity struggled to gain a foothold and survive in the polytheistic pool of Roman theology, its greatest rivals weren’t the Caesars or the Roman aristocracy but rather the faith and devotion of the common Roman legionary. The faith of these men was centered on the god Mithras, who, they believed, led them to victory upon the field of battle and had done so for nearly four centuries

Despite this widespread belief among soldiers, the cult of Mithras was not a creation of the Romans, although they would eventually add their own rituals and mysteries to the ancient religion. In fact, the Mithraic religion was an Indo-Persian creation, a theology which managed to travel from India and back into the Hellenic and Roman world by way of Alexander the Great’s conquest of the Persian Empire. Eventually, the cult of Mithras would spread across the ancient world, and Mithras would be worshiped from the mountains of India to the coasts of Spain. As a result, the cult of Mithras could ultimately be found in every corner of the Roman Empire.

The Mithras cult was one of the many “mystery religions” that the Romans adopted, several of which came from cultures outside of Rome. Isis, an Egyptian goddess, and Cybele, an Anatolian goddess, were both popular with Roman women, while Mithras, which was a variation of the name of the Zoroastrian demigod Mithra, was popular with Roman soldiers and the political elite for over 400 years. Since the Mithras cult, like all of the Roman mystery cults, was esoteric in nature, the exact nature of the influence other cultures had on the cult remains unknown, but some archaeological evidence has led modern scholars to make educated deductions. Some believe that the conscription of Persian soldiers into the Roman army and continued contact between the Parthians and Romans led to some members of the ever-eclectic Roman society adopting the cult directly from the Parthian/Zoroastrian religion (Clark 2001, 157). This seems like the most plausible explanation, but others have argued that the Mithras cult was actually a Roman religion that was given a Parthian fa�ade to make it appear more exotic in order to attract Romans who were enthralled with eastern spirituality (Clark 2001, 157).

The best evidence to determine the origins of the Mithras cult can be found in the many temples throughout Europe that the Romans erected to the god. These temples, known as mithraea, were subterranean chambers where the secret rituals of the cult took place. The best evidence from extant mithraea are the reliefs on the altars, which depict a graphic mythological story. The altar reliefs usually depict the god slaughtering a bull and often accompanied by a leaping dog (Clark 2001, 158). The references to Zoroastrian theology are unmistakable; the bull slaughter is similar to an account from a Zoroastrian text (the Bundahishen), while dogs were viewed as asha animals in Zoroastrian theology and an important part of the funerary ritual (Clark 2001, 158). The detailed iconography on the Mithras altars suggests that the inventors of the Mithras cult had more than just a superficial knowledge of Zoroastrianism, which in turn indicates a provenance of the religion somewhere in Persian or Parthia.

Excellent History of Rome's Strangest Cult

This little short was one of the strangest histories to date. It starts with its origin as an Indian God of contracts. Not really something you'd expect to see in Rome several hundred years later. This belief was then picked up by the Persians as a God of soldiers. Eventually with it's belief being incorporated into Zoroastrianism. A lot of Persian beliefs made its way into Rome through this cult. Like a belief in an eternal battle between good and evil.

Still it is surprising that a belief held by the Persians and their Parthian successors would end up being carried to Rome through the military. After all the Parthians were imperial Rome's greatest enemy. There is a lot of discussion of historical sources and the problems with knowing anything about a secret cult that met in underground temples. It was interesting how the cult withered when Constantine pushed Christianity through the army. The soldiers being the number one followers of Mithras.

Finally they discuss the similarities and differences between Mithras and early Christianity and show that despite popular misconceptions they were very different. Including big differences in the miracles they perform. The bibliography at the end gives excellent sources for future reading. I would definitely recommend.

This would be of interest to anyone wanting a superficial understanding of a competing cult to Christianity. The work is not scholarly and has few references. The author, sadly, fails to explore initiation rites and potential secret teachings of the cult. The biggest take-away for Christians is a better understanding of the culture during the time of Christ.

Simply helpful and a good read.

i highly recommend this wonderful book because I found it to be a delightful combination of useful Mental Hyigene information and a memoir of Dr Rafael Canton 90+ years of life and 60+ years of Psychiatric practice. The wisdom and humor makes for a good read and the information shared is a win win combination.In the complex environment we all find ourselves facing it is very helpful to have a resource that is easily accessible.The optimistic practical ideas and knowledge gives us power to affect changes in our life and can lead to a more peaceful world which is also Dr. Canton's goal.

A World of Nearly-Identical Twins?

This is an uplifting book that is well-grounded in reality. The author says he views all human beings as his nearly-identical twins, but in disguise. At the same time, he has a keen appreciation of each person's uniqueness. Sometimes, he says, he can't make his attempt to bond with the similar natures of other human beings work, but it's worth the effort when he is able to diminish the innate fear or distrust of strangers and better listen to what the other person says or does. He says he chooses to be optimistic in a world with so much sadness and suffering. He makes this choice, not by denying things that are truly difficult, but rather by choosing optimism when pessimism would be an equally easy choice. He notes that we aren't able to choose our feelings, but we can choose our ideas by gradually learning to modify the way we think. He presents several fairly easy strategies for practicing "thought selection." To me, his kernels of wisdom seem genuine and unforced, and I consider this thoughtful book a breath of fresh air, entirely unlike the usual genre self-serving, self-help books.

Rating: 5Heat Rating: 4 out of 5Dance with the Devil basically starts right where Night Embraceended so one of my first reactions to the book was "Yay! Zarek is alive!" With the way the last scene of his ended in Night Embrace I was afraid he was dead. Anyways, I loves me a tortured hero and Zarek definitely fits that bill. Dance with the Devil was a fabulous read and is the best in the Dark-Hunter series yet!I'll try not to fixate too much on Zarek in this review. I just love the man. Like I said, a tortured hero really touches my heart and Zarek has been tortured like no other. As a whipping boy in his human life Zarek had been abused in ways that were completely inhumane. Every time one of his half brothers did something wrong, or anyone for that matter, it was taken out on him. Some of the abuse was touched on in Night Embrace but we get so many more details of Zarek's abuse in Dance with the Devil. These details will make you incredibly nauseous. I never realized that there were literal whipping boys in our history. The practice was barbaric. Because Zarek had spent his human life being tortured, degraded and spat upon it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why the Dark-Hunter was so volatile. Even after Zarek became a Dark-Hunter and Ash had erased all the external damage done to his body the internal wounds still festered. Then, on top of that, as a punishment, about 900 years ago Zarek was banished to Alaska with nothing to do. A punishment for an act he had no memory of committing I might add. With nothing to do and no Diamons to kill it's a wonder the man wasn't totally loco.In comes Astrid. Astrid is a nymph of justice and a daughter of Themis the Greek Goddess of Justice. Since Zarek gets in some trouble in Night Embrace Artemis wants to kill him. Thank goodness for Acheron though. He manages to talk Artie into having Astrid judge Zarek to see if he was guilty of his crimes. There were many things that I liked about Astrid. She was a fair and impartial judge. I enjoyed her inquisitive mind. Her quest for the truth about Zarek despite the pressure put upon her by Artemis made me believe in her. Made me believe that she was good enough for my boy.OK. I dare not even try."Anyone feel all gooey inside or is it just me?This book was a much more introspective book than the others in the series so far. When we first met Zarek in Night Embrace I could pic up on his pain and his desire to belong. The man is so lonely. In Dance With the Devil we see a lot of Zarek reliving his past as he tries to overcome it. As he tries to gain some self worth and confidence. As he tries to except that someone might care about and except him.Though I'm in love with Zarek the other character that captured my heart was Simi. She's such a great demon! So cute yet deadly. I can't wait to see her in future books.Zarek has now joined the other characters that I have locked in my basement - Zsadit, Strider and Bones. He's simply captured my heart. You absolutely MUST READ his book!P.S. This does pretty well as a stand alone.A corny note:I love it when authors manage to slip in the title of the book somewhere within the book's pages and Kenyon did that in this book LOL.

I really enjoy the Dark Hunter Series. I have read them all. The early ones are her best by far. Just the right mix of romance, mystery and paranormal fantasy. The only issue is that the further you read in the series the more violent the books become. I definitely recommend the book, I just caution people that when you get to books such as Acheron and Styxx, the violence and torture can become too much to read. I had a very hard time finishing the last book she wrote (Styxx) because of how graphic it was. Don't let these comments stop you from reading her books. Ms. Kenyon truly knows how to create a world all of her own and make you believe it really exists. Her fantasy world contains so many substories, plot twists, character relationships that I don't know how she keeps them all straight, but everything she writes flows smoothly from one book to the next. You become so familar with characters that you feel as if these people exist in you life. She is an amazing writer.

My top favorite book from Sherrilyn's Dark-Hunter Series. Finally, the feariest Dark-Hunter Zarek faces his past and present. Sherrilyn takes us through the darkest moments in Zarek's life to unravel the mystery of his past. We finally understand how this Dark-Hunter is unable to be tamed. However something unexpected happens when a beautiful lonely goddess is given the task to judge his existence. Only then to find the love he's longed for and purpose to live. I love this book!! A must read.

Zarek's story has long been one of my favorites. I remember the first time I read this series that it was his book that turned me from someone who liked the series to someone who LOVED the series. His past just KILLS me. We learn things about Acheron that makes my heart ache. We get to see more of the tangled threads that weave the gods and mortals together. We get to meet Simi, the charming, irreverant Charonte demon that Ash loves like a child. Simi's musings on barbequing her enemies gave me a case of the giggles. There's just SO MUCH going on here. SO MUCH!My love for heroes who have been sorely abused, mistreated, neglected, and otherwise have had a s*** life continues. Zarek is so prickly most people avoid him like the plague. Ash's musings on why Z is quick to lash out hurt. He hasn't known an ounce of compassion in his life -- just like Ash -- and he hurts others because it's the only thing that's a constant for him. He's another one that I just want to give cookies and hugs to. Poor Z. Poor, poor Z. I felt for Astrid, too. She's forced to lie to Zarek about who she is and the more she learns about Z, the more she knows that her lies will hurt him when he finds out the truth. It's a sticky situation.Seriously, I adore the threads of the overall arc that are being revealed. It's big and it's just going to get bigger. As a reread, I think I enjoyed this as much as I did before simply because I like seeing all the groundwork being laid for later stories. This series is huge and a little intimidating and I'm a little in awe of Sherrilyn Kenyon's storytelling abilities.-Kelly @ Reading the Paranormal

You step into colonial Burma and Thailand during the early 1920s, and you will travel by mule train, rail cars, and motor cars all described as only Willy Maugham can !! I love the way he describes the people he meets, the quint South East Asian villages, and the lush jungles that took over Angkor Wat like magical pythons out of an opium dream. I can here the song, "Hungry like the wolf" ( 1983 by Duran Duran) on this South East Asian voyage complete with Buddhist monks in saffron colored robes and expat colonials living strange lives far away from the stately homes back in Mayfair and Knightsbridge in London. Yes, as a fan of Somerset Maugham, this is a great book from a bygone era that will never return again.

W. Somerset Maugham's travel collection Gentleman In The Parlour (1930) is an uneven collection of stories from the author's trip through what was then Burma and Siam, ending in Haiphong, Vietnam. As Paul Theroux points out in the introduction, he wrote the book several yeas after the fact and wrote the story from the point of view of a solo traveler, even though he had a companion on that lengthy Asian journey. He does write about some of the local color, but he mostly focuses on cultural differences and the most entertaining episodes are about some of the characters he met on his journey.

Reading Maugham's colorful descriptions of his travels in a small volume with yellowed pages easily lulled me back eighty years into the time he wrote which is so different from how one would go to SE Asia nowadays. Taking a break from writing fiction, he filled his journal with interesting stories of people he met along the way. I especially marveled at the former monk's recollection of collecting food in his begging bowl and the man who had to marry in a hurry in order to get a job. The beauty of his writing shown through each page; for example: "The coconut trees with their disheveled heads were like old men suddenly risen from sleep." Written from his heart, the journal felt like a way of getting a look inside Maugham's soul.

If you like Southeast Asia, this is a wonderful book to read. Although old fashioned, it will make you laugh and reminiscent. It describes Asia that we imagined, but which no longer exists. Take it with you on a trip to Myanmar or Vietnam.

Aldo he tells us he has left himself at home he gives us a very interesting and personal account of his observations. But more than a traveller Maugham remains a story teller and writer, some of the stories he tells us from this trip he published elsewhere to, sometimes even before this journey.So more than a travelogue this is a very carefully composed novel in the form of a traveler’s story. And also his observations tent to be very personal he is very careful about his private life. For instance there is no word about his companion. His eighteen year younger lover Gerald Haxton, how also was a great help on all his journeys. He always pretends to travel alone (with local guides and helpers) he actually never does. Like many famous travelers, such as Bruce Chatwin, V.S. Naipaul, Graham Green and Wilfred Thesiger, all pretending to travel alone, but all in the good company of lovers, wives and mistresses. Nothing wrong with that but it sheds a little different light on their journeys, and makes the travels of the few actual solitary wanderers all the more heroic.All do complaining sometimes the periods of his travels though south east Asia must have been among the happiest of Maugham’s life. He is happy, healthy, in the company of his lover, enjoying country as well as city, confident, hopeful and full of energy. This novels tells us that too, the long line of works he wrote after this trip even so.

classic math stat test that I used to prepare for math qualifying exam at the University of Maryland

Hogg and Craig is one of my favorite texts. It is an intermediate text in mathematical statistics similar to Mood, Graybill and Boes. I took qualifying exams in mathematics for my Masters Degree at the University of Maryland in the early 1970s. One of the exams I took was in statistics. I had little formal training in statistics at the time. Hogg and Craig was the recommended text for the statistics exam. So I bought it and studied out of it on my own. It was very clear with excellent coverage of methods for deriving distributions for random variables and transformations of random variables. I passed my exams and got my highest grades on the statistics exam even though I had more training in abstract algebra. Hogg and Craig really helped. It has been revised since then to maintain currency with statistical developments but it still has maintained its clarity and usefulness. Most of the other reviews that are critical of it are way off base. I am sure that efforts have been made with the numerous revisions to keep the material up to date. Perhaps some critics are correct that it comes up short on some modern advances in Bayesian statistics and other computer-intensive statistical methods. But that should not tarnish its reputation as a classic text in mathematical statistics.

Check if you can get an alternative

There muliple starting points that could generate your interest and need for this book. If you are a math undergrad major, and this is your required reading, stop here, go get it, use it and probably sell second hand -- you won't be doing that much statistics anyway. If you are a grad student with a major other than statistics, and this is a required reading for a class in statisitical inference you are taking at a local Stat department, stop here and go get it anyway; it won't hurt to have it. Everybody else, welcome to continue...

I am now teaching a semester class on introduction to probability theory (the first class in two semester sequence) using this book, and I don't like it very much. It has a little bit strange audience in mind: students who barely have enough math background to do statistics, just the standard 3 semester calculus sequence, but no real analysis and no complex analysis. If you do statistics for living, or consider doing that, you need something more serious measure-theory based (at least that's how I was taught in my grad program, and I see huge advantages in looking down at probability theory from the measure theory prospective).

In other words, it is one of the few books that fill in the gap between all those colorful but very limited and boring "Probability and Statistics for Housewives" the-only-math-class-for-my-general-college-requirement books that steer away from calculus and call a cdf "area under the curve", on one side; and Cramer's Mathematical Methods of Statistics or Kendall/Stuart's Kendall's Advanced Theory of Statistics or Billingsley's Probability and Measure, 3rd Edition (which I also reviewed), on the other side of the rigor spectrum. You get what you paid for: if you invested more into your math training, you would get a much better leverage and understanding of statistics from other books, see below. With this much of calculus, H&C is probably as far as you can go about math statistics.

The material is sequenced in a somewhat awkward manner. Sigma-fields are mentioned in the first chapter, but are not actually used anywhere -- you need measure extension theorems for this stuff to make sense and be useful, and this will shoot you quite far out of the calculus-only class. So, is this an extra stuff that a stat student does not need? Probably not at this level!

Most examples in ealry chapters use well known distributions like uniform, exponential, Poisson, binomial without naming them, and without using the normal distribution that only appears later in the book. I found this confusing, and so will my students, I am afraid. Many of the important concepts, like modes and percentiles of a distribution, or a nice E[u(X)|X]=u(X) shortcut, are hidden in the exercises, so unless you as the instructor stumble across them in the end of a section, or if you are using this book as a reference, then you and/or your students won't see them.

So overall: yes, it is a dated book, it still is an important book for math stat training; but I will only recommend it for somebody in exactly that calculus-only niche. You can use Cramer as a reference; using Hogg and Craig for a reference won't suffice.

Now, what about the alternatives? I am using Wasserman's All of Statistics as a strong supplement in teaching from Hogg and Craig and pulling somewhat nicer examples, exercises, and supplementary results not mentioned in H&C. It also has the same not-so-advanced audience in mind (the course was originally written for computer science students interested in data mining, and a nice extra feature is that Wasserman talks about the computer learning paradigm in parallel to statistical inference paradigm); it is much better written and laid out, with important definitions and theorems clearly highlighted; it structures the material better... BUT! it does not have almost any proofs. However scared you as a student might be of this p-word, your class on mathematical statistics must have enough of those to give you an idea how mathematical statistics works, and how different results in statistics are linked to one another.

Of course another alternative is the classic Cramer "Mathematical Methods of Statistics" textbook that is even more aged (1943) that Hogg and Craig (1958), but it is just better written and more complete. With this one, however, you would need your real analysis, measure theory and complex analysis... or at least some basic understanding of those.

Intro to Math Stats

I am currently a graduate student in Statistics at Miami University of Ohio. For my first and second mathematical statistics courses, we are using this text.

This is a really great book. It is fairly short, and each section is on average only 2-3 pages, but those 2-3 pages are absolutely packed with good stuff. Usually there will be a short introductory paragraph on the topic, and then the authors get right into theorems and examples. There are usually 2-3 theorems and 2-3 examples per section, and they are all organized very well.

The theorems always appear in an appropriate place in the section (i.e. it makes sense in the flow of the explanation of the topic). They are always set up in a manner which makes them easy to understand, and proof of each theorem follows its declaration. If the theorem is too difficult to understand or too long to reasonably fit a paragraph, the authors cite the original publication in which the theorem appeared. Additionally, there are no extraneous proofs, and each one of them is essential to understanding the course material.

The examples usually follow the theorems and will use the result of the theorem as a direct tool to solve the example. Most of the time, the examples will be pretty similar to the homework problems, and provide good hints that will lead you in the right direction when you are attempting the homework. The authors are never trying to be "impressive" with their examples; the clear objective is to help you understand the material without being unnecessarily complicated and/or skipping steps.

The homework is also excellent. It is challenging enough to force you to be competent with all of the material presented, but never leaves you at one of those infamous "google search" dead-ends. Usually the first 8-10 problems in each section are relatively easy if you are grasping the material, and there are lots of answers in the back of the book to aid you. As you get to the end of the homework problems in the section, you will be looking at things that are highly theoretical, are proofs, or require critical thinking. The authors' response to this extra challenge is really the greatest thing I have ever found in a college-level textbook. If a homework problem requires using a "trick" that is beyond the common-sense level, the authors provide a helpful "hint" to point you in the right direction. It is certainly possible to solve the problem without using the hint, but after doing a semester of problems, I can tell you that the hints will save you hours of frustration that you would have spent trying to figure out what little "trick" you were supposed to use to solve the problem.

All in all, I think this is the best mathematics textbook I've ever had, a close second behind "Introductory Abstract Algebra" by Joe Gallian. I think if you are interested in statistics at the graduate level, this is THE BOOK to get you started. I honestly cannot think of any criticisms that I have of this book, and I truly believe it's possible to learn the foundation of mathematical statistics with this book, even if you don't have a professor available to you.

Great second story in the series.

Sort of a Harry Potter story set in a military academy, with interesting teachers, a crusty headmistress type admiral in charge, a student with amazing powers, a couple of stalwart friends, etc. etc. Fun to read.

A good follow up to Book One.

The main character continues to evolve and change based on the experiences she goes through from Book One. What is interesting to me is how Axira deals with her own proscribed limitations so people don't find out what she is or can do. My only issue with the book is it is a bit short. That however can be considered a personal idiosyncrasy on my part, because I can devour novels 3 times that long in a single read.

Natural extension of the first book.

This continues the series, with the natural step-up in the conflict from the first book. We learn more about the characters and Axira is forced to reveal more of her abilities. All the great aspects of the first book are continued here, with Axira slowly learning how to be a "person" and learning how to worry about more than just her desire for revenge.
