From the Back Cover

The #1 New York Times bestselling memoir of U.S. Navy Seal Chris Kyle, and the source for Clint Eastwood’s blockbuster movie which was nominated for six academy awards, including best picture. From 1999 to 2009, U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle recorded the most career sniper kills in United States military history. His fellow American warriors, whom he protected with deadly precision from rooftops and stealth positions during the Iraq War, called him “The Legend”; meanwhile, the enemy feared him so much they named him al-Shaitan (“the devil”) and placed a bounty on his head. Kyle, who was tragically killed in 2013, writes honestly about the pain of war—including the deaths of two close SEAL teammates—and in moving first-person passages throughout, his wife, Taya, speaks openly about the strains of war on their family, as well as on Chris. Gripping and unforgettable, Kyle’s masterful account of his extraordinary battlefield experiences ranks as one of the great war memoirs of all time.

Excellent perspective from one who served. Seldom do I condemn other reviewers in their stance, but this is the rare exception. To all those who thought or think this is American propaganda, then you either did not read the book, or your mind was made up before you started or you have not read any other memoirs from any other conflicts in the world. This is the insight of a man who was on the ground and answered the call of his country and performed to exemplary levels of honor, bravery and comradeship. You will find the same type of writing in “Last Dead Hero”- Robert Lamon, “Blood Red Snow”- Gunther K. Koschorrek, “The Forgotten Soldier” Guy Sajer “Patton” Ladislas Farago and a host of others. These men fought for their country and sought to defeat and destroy the enemy. Plain and simple, waris about killing people to win. It’s not a walk in the park and handled through diplomacy where everyone holds hands and smiles. War is ugly, destructive and dehumanizing. Ask the Russians how many they lost during World War Two. Ask the British if they had, as Neville Chamberlain proclaimed, “Peace in our time.” You win by killing your enemy!Chris gives the reader a frontline look at how the battle in Iraq was fought. Does he come across as inhumane? Perhaps. But as a sniper, his job isn’t to sit back and observe, it’s to protect his fellow soldiers in harms way. And he does this by killing the enemy.I have talked, not interviewed, many men who served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq/Afghanistan. The common thread all of these men and women hold is, they are fighting for the man/woman by their side. Politics and grand strategies are the farthest thing from their minds. Protecting their fellow soldiers is front and foremost. His insight to his commanders is a common theme you’ll find in most biographies-incompetent. His description of one of these, “0% casualties, 100% effectiveness.” galled him. How do you go out in the field to ambush or become a target for your foe and not expect to incur casualties? I’m sure those were the words Eisenhower, Bradley, Montgomery, Patton, Truscott, Roosevelt, King, Schwarzkopf and Franks told their men as they were going into the fray. No!The other side of this tribute is his family life. Was it all rose gardens and happy-go-lucky? Far from it. His wife Taya had her own battles to fight. She was responsible for raising their two children while he was off fighting. Her insights to their fiery, troubled relationship are well timed and placed through this work. She does not hold back how much she despises the military but also understands that her husband is bound and determined to keep the bad guys from coming to the states and making sure he does everything in his ability to make that happen. For her, it is a Catch-22. She loves her husband and is proud of his service, but sooner or later, he’s going to have to make family number two on the list. When Chris realizes that he’s not immortal during his last deployment and reenlistment is coming up, he will have to decide if he wants to continue his service which could result in him losing his family. He chooses the later. This alone is an excellent testament of two people not taking the easy road. They overcame their differences and remembered why they fell in love in the first place.I recommend this warrior’s story to anyone who wants a glimpse into the day to day life of a man who is dedicated to his God, Country and Family.

Really great book – I have a couple points, but first I served in Iraq in 08-09 as a gunner as a member of a combat MP team; being said, I have the utmost respect for snipers because of their overwatch capabilities. I mean, they all deserve a high five for keeping us ground pounders save over there. As for the book, I like it because Kyle writes in spoken word, not a verbage packed authoring kinda thing. He writes and talks like a SEAL. It’s well written, I enjoyed the tidbits form Taya – reminds me of when I describe my deployment and then my wife cuts in too. Very genuine book. As a soldier, I gotta pick on other branches as a requirement. Kyle calls SEALs silent professionals, I understand what he’s saying, but he can get kinda obnoxious and narsasstic sometimes, im not giggin’ the guy though, he’s a friggin’ SEAL, a horse of another color and im sure if I went through BUD/S and came out the other end, I’d be a cocky bad-a%% too! Anyway, God bless Kyle and his family, rest in peace brother, you earned eternity of it in heaven – thanks for you and all your brethren who watched our six, even when we didn’t know you guys were there.

Book is a pretty detailed version of Kyle's experiences in Iraq, and it's a good read. Movie is more of a summary of Kyle's 4 tours in Iraq, and adds a lot of embellishments and untruths into the Kyle story (Hollywood does this for more dramatic effects). That being said, the book received a lot of criticisms about Kyle making up a lot of stories to turn himself into more of a "Legend" than he really was. Such criticisms included Kyle taking out Looters in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina; this was not discussed in this book. Neither was the criticism of the alleged Jesse Ventura episode, where Kyle supposedly punched the former governor in the face. None of this was discussed in this book or at least the version I read. Maybe the publishers took those stories out in this version due to the criticisms and the subsequent defamation lawsuit filed by Ventura. I don't know. Anyway, this book is a good read, and, in my opinion, a better depiction of Kyle than the Eastwood movie version.

I had intended to read this book and see the film but was immediately moved to do so after listening to an interview with the screenwriter on The Rich Roll podcast. The intro to the book states that it was submitted for review to the military prior to publication in accordance with their standards and that there was quite a bit that they didn't like. What that tells you is that this is a pretty raw account of serving as a dedicated Navy SEAL sniper. It is not an overly romanticized tale of a hero or a legend as Chris Kyle has come to be known. He definitely expresses his 100% dedication to his SEAL profession and in that regard is probably a Navy recruiters dream poster boy but he also shares the toll that a decade of commitment took on him physically, emotionally and in regards to his family. He really seems to have put it all out on the table. A great addition to the book are brief submissions from his wife on how this life was affecting their relationship and children. Without her contribution it would have been easy to view this story with a neat and clean arc of enthusiasm and excitement to action to a slightly rough but ultimately successful re-entry to civilian life. Instead we get a real sense of the fact that coming home entails much more than merely adjusting to indoor plumbing and quiet nights. This is a very complete view into the challenges this type of commitment ultimately entails for the individuals as well as their families. It is heart breaking to discover what ultimately claimed him after all that he and his family went thru. We can only hope that his story serves to shine a bright light on the issues surrounding combat veterans and that we are all much more conscious of the many sacrifices of the brave that serve us. I highly recommend his wife's book, American Wife, to get the full picture.RIP Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield

This is a great read. I didn’t know a thing about the Cuban revolution in 1959. Read like a novel and very informative and interesting

Lots of good information, well written, lots of action, keeps you interested

Truly riveting! Perrottet’s writing let’s one feel they were right there in all the action and inaction; misfortune and fortune of the rebels winning against overwhelming odds. Very engaging throughout.

Full disclosure: Tony is a friend of mine. But I have other friends who've written books I didn't review here because I didn't love them (the books, not the friends!). Cuba Libre is a fantastic read. Tony asked me to look at it and consider writing a blurb. I figured I'd read a chapter or two, determine whether or not I could recommend it with a clear conscience, and then get back to my own work. Instead, I spent two days with my nose buried in this thing, absorbing the experience of being part of the Cuban revolution, hanging with Fidel and Che and the women they loved, tasting the food they concocted from what they could buy from grateful villagers, smell the tropical rain.... This is a book that pulses and breathes with unexpected insight, humor, and erudition. I can't recommend it highly enough.

For those who want to learn about the most unusual revolution to ever take place in the Western Hemisphere, you simply MUST get this book. The book is a fascinating, tumultuous journey with extraordinary detail, written with great humor as well. Rare archival photos of Che, Fidel and many others add to it and it's so compelling that I went without dinner because I couldn't put it down! If you have any remote interest in the Cuban Revolution you owe it to yourself to get this book. You will be rewarded with story telling that is truly mesmerizing.

What an enjoyable book. Even though I'm in my 50s I knew very little about Fidel, Che, and the Cuban Revolution. The author did a fantastic job telling this incredible story. I find with books like these that I sometimes have trouble keeping track of all of people mentioned, but the author wrote in such a way that each character stood out. Also, I loved the way the author reviewed Cuba’s history in the early part of the book, giving enough detail to set context but not slowing the book down with too much detail. As for the story of Fidel, Che, and the rebels, it was nothing short of astonishing. They were so outnumbered and they made so many mistakes, and yet they prevailed thanks to cleverness, charisma, commitment, and often, luck. I enjoyed learning about Fidel and Che as well as the women who participated in the Revolution. This book is a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at an incredible historical event.

Author does a great job of assembling even the minute facts and revealing the lack of any glory in the Cuban Revolt. It sounds like a group of stooges led by a bipolar leader who was terribly unprepared for any task at hand which resulted in the death , capture and torture of many loyal but ignorant followers. A Woodstock gone very wrong. One thing the author reveals is the awesome and misleading power the media offers in deluding the public and it's leaders. So relevant to today's political climate. The book is a telltail reveal it all on corruption that existed on both sides of the Cuban environment of the 50's. Such a terrible waste of life in the desire for money , power and control of the Cuban people.

Though in the last two years I've often found myself thinking, "How is it possible that THESE are my leaders?", reading Tony Perrottet's Cuba Libre! was an excellent reminder that mad ego, crazy power grabs and insanity at the top seems more a rule than an exception. Cuba's fascinating and wild history is beautifully and excitingly told by Perrottet, who is a gifted storyteller with a flare for character. Reading this book was not only a great primer on an important neighbor, it was a tremendous amount of fun! Highly recommend.

The Acid King Chapter 1 SUNDAY, JULY 1, 1984 4:45 P.M. “THERE’S A BODY IN THE woods behind Gunther’s Tap Room.” The line went dead. Larry Springsteen stared at the telephone receiver cradled in his hand. The fifty-four-year-old lieutenant for the Northport Village Police Department had to think quick. Everyone in town knew Gunther’s. As Northport’s favorite watering hole, the bar had made a name for itself as one of writer Jack Kerouac’s favorite drinking spots. But a body? In Northport? Nothing ever happened here. Hell, that was the reason most people moved here in the first place. As far as Springsteen knew, no one in Northport was even missing. The woman on the other end of the line had sounded young. Maybe it was a prank? Either way, Springsteen had to follow up. If there really was a body in the local woods and the police brushed a tip off as a crank call, there would be hell to pay. Springsteen dialed the home of Officer Gene Roemer, who was off-duty that day. He told Roemer about the strange phone call and asked him to come into work to help trace it. Roemer obliged and soon the two were working on a trace at the small village hall that housed police headquarters on Main Street. Unfortunately, their efforts were unsuccessful. Too much time had passed since the anonymous caller hung up. Springsteen and Roemer organized a brief search of the area behind Gunther’s, but no remains were found. Maybe the call really was a prank? Roemer and Springsteen decided to continue their investigation the following morning, and both headed home. Any optimism the two policemen shared was shattered the next day when another call came in—this time from Sister Mary James, the head nun at the Madonna Heights School for Girls in Dix Hills. James told the police that one of their students, Jean Wells, had returned to the school after a weekend in Northport and told a counselor that her friend, a teenager named Gary Lauwers, had been murdered and buried in a place called “Aztakea Woods.” Once the call ended, Springsteen telephoned his boss, Northport Village Police Chief Robert Howard, and alerted him to the situation. Howard had just begun a monthlong vacation, leaving Springsteen in command. Springsteen, however, thought his chief needed to be directly involved. When Chief Howard arrived at the station, he placed Officer Roemer in charge of the investigation. At forty-two years old, Roemer had been with the department for nearly twenty years and had proven himself to be an outstanding officer. His first move was to drive over to the Lauwers residence on West Scudder Place to see if Gary was even missing. Chief Howard joined him. Once Roemer and Howard arrived, Gary’s mother, Yvonne Lauwers, insisted that she speak with the two on her front lawn. Over the past year, Gary had gotten himself into some serious legal trouble—mostly robbery and assault—and his father, Herbert Lauwers, forbade his wife from even mentioning their son’s name in the house. Standing outside, Yvonne told Roemer and Howard that she had not seen Gary for some time. “Well, you know,” she said. “This is not unusual. Sometimes I don’t see him for two or three weeks.” “That may be,” Roemer replied, running his hand through his thick graying hair, “but how about doing me a favor? I can’t really do this kind of investigation without a missing person’s report. As soon as he’s located, the law says we gotta tear this up and it never happened. We can’t release it to anybody because he’s a minor.” The fifty-six-year-old mother of three relented, and filled out the required paperwork for Roemer. Now armed with the documentation he needed, Roemer could continue his investigation. He wanted to question Jean Wells immediately, so he headed south to Madonna Heights School for Girls, only ten miles outside of Northport. When Roemer pulled up to the large white mansion at the end of the long, paved driveway, he found Jean’s parents waiting for their fifteen-year-old daughter. When Jean emerged from her classroom, they began to chastise her. “What did you do wrong now?!” her mother and father demanded. Officer Roemer stepped in. “Your daughter did something very courageous,” he told the distraught couple. Sitting down with Jean, Roemer asked how she found out about Gary’s murder. She replied that she had gone to the Northport movie theater around noon the previous day to hang out with her friend Karen. The two had made plans to meet at the Midway, Northport’s local head shop, and then walk downtown to see a movie. Afterward, they planned to grab lunch at Phase II Heros on Main Street. Also joining them on that fateful day was Karen’s boyfriend, Jimmy Troiano. Jean was slightly intimidated by Jimmy. An eighteen-year-old high school dropout, Jimmy had a reputation for being a tough guy who dabbled in drug dealing and the occasional burglary. His physical appearance was also unsettling to some. Since he was a young boy, Jimmy Troiano’s face had been adorned with a large scar, along with a grin marked by a mouthful of unnaturally sharp teeth. The canines were the result of genetics, but the scar came from a childhood injury on a local playground. Some say a seven-year-old Jimmy took the chained hook from a swing set and jumped off the top, tearing his cheek open in the process. Others maintain he merely fell. Either way, Troiano’s face had earned him the unflattering nickname “Drac”—short for Dracula. Before he dropped out of Northport High School in the middle of his sophomore year, Jimmy’s classmates made sure “Monster Mash” was played in his honor at their ninth-grade dance. Once Jean arrived at the Midway, she exchanged small talk with Karen and Jimmy before asking the question that would change their lives forever. “Hey, I haven’t seen Ricky since I left for boarding school,” Jean said. “How’s he doing?” “Ricky” was Ricky Kasso, Jimmy Troiano’s best friend. Ricky’s taste for ingesting and selling LSD had earned him the tongue-in-cheek nickname “the Acid King.” In reality, Ricky’s kingdom was sparse. For the last three years, he had been bouncing back and forth between his parents’ home and living on the streets. His father, a strict disciplinarian, had no tolerance for his son’s drug-fueled rebellion. By spring 1984, Ricky was seventeen and homeless, with no job or education. He survived by sleeping on friends’ couches, inside public restrooms, and even in a sewer trench at the Port Jefferson railroad station. What little money he had from selling drugs usually went to buying more. “Oh, Ricky? He just killed some guy,” Jimmy replied. “What’s his name? Um . . . um . . . Gary.” “Gary Lauwers?” she asked. Jean knew Gary well. The two had been friends since they were in elementary school. “Yeah,” Jimmy replied nonchalantly. “What?!” Jean exclaimed. “That’s not funny, Jimmy!” “Nah, I’m serious!” Jimmy insisted. “Do you wanna go up and see it?” “ ‘No!” Jean replied. “What are you talking about?!” The three stood in the rain as Jimmy told them how there had supposedly been a “bad drug deal” between Ricky and Gary, so he and Ricky decided to ambush him. Jimmy and Ricky, along with their friend Albert Quinones, then lured Gary into Aztakea Woods and stabbed him to death. Karen laughed, thinking Jimmy was pulling a prank on Jean. She had no reason to believe the things her boyfriend was saying. The laughter caused Jean to temporarily relax and they all headed downtown to catch their movie. However, sitting in the darkness of Northport’s small theater, Jean couldn’t stop thinking about what Jimmy had said to her. What if Gary really was lying dead up in Aztakea? After the movie, Jean skipped lunch with Karen and Jimmy and called her mom from a pay phone, asking to be picked up right away. Once she got home, Jean quietly snuck over to a neighbor’s house and asked to use their phone. She called the Lauwers residence and Gary’s mother, Yvonne, picked up. “Hi, Mrs. Lauwers, this is Jean,” she said. “Is Gary home?” “No, Jean, he’s not,” Yvonne replied. “I haven’t seen him in two weeks.” Jean felt a chill dancing up her spine. She hung up and immediately called the Northport Village Police Department. While Jean’s story seemed believable to Roemer, he still wondered if the girl was simply the butt of a cruel joke. After all, he knew about Kasso, Troiano, and the trouble they liked to cause. “Jean, is it possible Jimmy may have been lying to you?” he asked. “We checked the woods yesterday and we didn’t find anything.” “Oh, of course!” the pretty young blonde said, desperate to believe Roemer’s suggestion. “Jimmy definitely could have been telling me a story. . . .” Roemer left Madonna Heights wondering if this investigation had become a fool’s errand. He now had the names of the victim and the alleged killers, but no hard evidence. When he returned to headquarters, Roemer called the Suffolk County Police Department, asking for help locating Gary Lauwers’s remains. However, Suffolk County turned down this request, telling him that teenage gossip wasn’t enough to warrant their intervention. Undeterred, Roemer scheduled another search of Aztakea Woods for the following afternoon. When he returned to Madonna Heights the next morning, Roemer asked Jean Wells if she would be willing to take a polygraph test. She agreed without hesitation. When Jean arrived at the Suffolk County Police Department in Yaphank for the test, Roemer first had her meet with detectives from the homicide bureau. Upon hearing her story, the detectives decided Jean was credible, canceled the test, and agreed to help the Northport police search Aztakea that afternoon. Unfortunately, this search also came up empty. Due to severe thunderstorms, the police dogs could not key in on any kind of scent that might have led to a body. Tired and frustrated, the investigators decided to go home and try again the next day.

I held my breath awaiting the release of this book. I know first hand how this story was made into a media circus with the focus on Satanism and away from the real issues of the mental health of families and individuals compounded by drug use and the horrific outcome. I saw how facts were twisted to fit the sensational rather than presenting the truth. I know because I was in the middle of it all, as you will see, if you read this book.As we saw all the lies being presented in all forms of media, my coworker, Suzi and I promised each other that someday, when enough time had passed, so that we would not further hurt anyone who had lived through that ordeal, we would write a book, so that at least the truth would be out there for those who wanted to know it. The problem was, neither of us really knew how to write a book. Jesse Pollack has now written that book for us. This is indeed as accurate of a telling of the story that I could imagine. His style of writing had me reading to see “what was going to happen next”, even though I had lived through it myself. As I read each page, I could feel myself transported back to that time, reliving every moment. There is enough intrigue in the story that it would have made a very interesting novel, the problem is that it’s not a fictional story but really happened. It’s important, not only that we should know the true tragedy that unfolded and what led up to it but in truth, just with different characters, in many ways is still being played out today. On so many levels, this is a must read.

I've read a great deal of true crime over the years, and this was one of the best I've read in a long while. The narrative moves along, and doesn't conform to a standard format. The individuals are fleshed out, and the amount of excellent research revealed; as all the characters rang true.An example: There's not a lot to like about what Ricky Kasso became, but the manner in which he grew to be was communicated well, in both scope and feel. I was surprised to find myself pausing to understand what it must have been like to be on the street and unable to detach from the spiral; feeling unloved, unwanted, a throwaway. The author uses good backup to explain motivations, and allows the story to unfold smoothly and fully. The use of the ancillary story of Breskin's work was an excellent method of revealing deeper facts and painting the feel of the era.Highly recommended.

I received "The Acid King" in the mail and have already finished it.I hard a hard time putting it down.Jesse P Pollock, the author, did a fantastic job. It's not just about the terrible killing in the Aztekea woods, but covers the lives of all the kids from the time they were young, until they got involved with drugs, like the hallucinogens,PCP and LSD.Jesse P Pollock does not demonize these kids, but showed them to be human.I would recommend this book to anyone who likes an honest truthful true crime storyYou definitely have to read it to understand what I'm saying, and draw your own conclusions.

Fantastic read. I couldn't put it down. Yes, it's part of the publisher's teen line, but don't let that fool you: this is a sophisticated page turner. "Satanic Panic" was a period of time that negatively affected many lives, including my own. This particular crime is the one that kicked an obscure movement into a full-fledged, sometimes literal, witchhunt. Bravo to the author, who crafted the sad and scary facts into a detailed timeline without the unnecessary drama and flourishes that pepper most true crime books. I read Pollack's other book, "Death on the Devil's Teeth," which was also fascinating and very well written. It's clear to me that this writer has a very bright future--he is a must read on my list!

So, I'm not a scholar or an author or an expert. I'm just a regular average creep who loves occult crimes and a good story. The Acid King has both, and will keep you amazed and horrified til the end. Before this book, I had read "Say you love Satan" because it was the only other book I could find that focused on Ricky Kasso. While that had good story, after read AK you realize how sensationalized SYLS was, and that the occult aspect overshadowed the real story: a teenage kid who didn't have a chance commiting a horrible crime, and paying the ultimate price. This book made Ricky Kasso very relateable, which is part of why it was so horrifying. To find yourself feeling for this teenage kid who was capable of something so awful. We all knew a Ricky Kasso growing up, they just had different names and came from different places. In all, Acid King reads well and it's obvious the author has done intensive research, and tells the true story of a lost kid looking for a way out, by any means. Been a long time since I read a book I couldn't put down, so this is it. My only complaint is I wish I hadn't read it so fast! All Hail Ricky the Acid King!!!

In a world where it’s becoming more and more difficult to distinguish the facts from fake news, it’s refreshing to read a book that sorts through all of the sloppy reporting and misinformation that surrounded a sensational murder case in 1980s Long Island. As the author points out in The Acid King, many reporters, including those from top new organizations, didn’t even bother to do their own investigations. They just ran with the most sensationalistic elements surrounding the case of Ricky Kasso without doing due diligence. Pollack dispels many myths about the case, the most pervasive one that implied there was an evil Satanic cult in Northport, LI, that practiced animal sacrifice and grave robbing. If you are into true crime and great investigative reporting, you will enjoy this book immensely.

Review

Praise for The Know-It-Alls:Included in Backchannel’s (WIRED.com) “Top Tech Books of 2017” An “important” book on the “pervasive influence of Silicon Valley on our economy, culture and politics.”—New York Times“A valuable addition to the growing body of literature that’s trying to explain how a culture of under-socialized wunderkind CEOs drove tech’s future into a ditch.”—Backchannel (WIRED.com) “An unabashed critique of the values of Silicon Valley start-ups that increasingly control our lives online.”—Library Journal “The Know-It-Alls examines highly influential figures such as the often-neglected computer pioneers John McCarthy and Frederick Terman, who helped to transform Stanford, California, and its valley into a digital powerhouse ― McCarthy as the father of artificial intelligence, Terman as a catalyst for local entrepreneurialism. These finely researched portraits are a joy.”—Nature Magazine “[Cohen] shows how the cult of personality for tech entrepreneurs developed out of a ‘combination of a hacker’s arrogance and an entrepreneur’s greed’ and . . . helps chip away at the power these men (another crucial quality) have carved out for themselves. . . . An enlightening breakdown of how Silicon Valley billionaires have shifted popular discourse in their favor.”—Kirkus Reviews “Individualism is a big part of what makes America great—until it becomes a euphemism for selfishness and arrogance among lucky winners who prefer to believe that luck and other people had nothing to do with their success. The Know-It-Alls is a terrific case study of some of the unreckoned costs of the digital revolution, and how one piece of the American idea threatens to overwhelm the others.”—Kurt Andersen, author of Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire and host of NPR's Studio 360 “Why is the Internet the way it is? How has commerce come to dominate the scramble for clicks and eyeballs? What kind of people, essentially all of them young men―brainy, ambitious, focused, very young young men―created cyberspace? Via the careers of a dozen of them, Noam Cohen tells the story in this entertaining, refreshingly unworshipful survey.”—Hendrik Hertzberg, author of Politics: Observations & Arguments and ¡Obamanos! “A fascinating intellectual profile of the people who have increasingly come to rule our world. With precision and skill, Noam Cohen tweaks the pretensions of a handful of tech oligarchs, whose self-styled project to better our lives results in little more than a power grab at our economy and our democracy. . . . I’ll be turning to Cohen’s insights into the profiteers responsible again and again.”—David Dayen, author of Chain of Title “A provocative and illuminating examination of Silicon Valley. Using profiles of its core digital capitalist giants and the immense political, economic and cultural power they have quickly come to possess, Cohen raises troubling questions about how this can possibly square with a fair, decent, humane, and democratic society. This immensely readable book should be mandatory reading.”—Robert W. McChesney, author of Digital Disconnect

Mr. Cohen put perspective into my own writing about technology that was so missing - the lives of the founders. First of Stanford, then Silicon Valley, then the elitist culture we have today. Here is a beautifully constructed chronology of one generation's quest (1950's) to improve the human condition with machine intel leading to the next and the next generation of digital companies in it for pure profit and, more dangerously, controlling human behaviors. My highest recommendation is given.

OK - so I come at these issues from a rather opposite end of the spectrum. But, you know - something IS wrong with the internet, and Cohen is part of this early vanguard that is trying to pin down the problem and the solutions. I think the strongest parts of the book are the profiles of successful internet pioneers -- and how they essentially took over the medium from the early hacker culture that, for all its quirky characters, would never have imagined that the internet would become the pinnacle of twenty first century capitalist culture. But that's what has happened - and the question is: is that ok? Cohen is the guy waving his arms, warning us that it's only going to get worse. Our society and social structures will all become pawns in this ever expanding technological universe. Do we have the will to stop it?Now, my question is: stop what? After all, the internet is more than Facebook. In fact, I don't know a lot of people who use Facebook. And some of us have very thin relationships to Instagram, or Pinterest, or Youtube. And Google? Maybe it's not the world's greatest company, but I turn to it a thousand times a day. And many people from all walks of life with all kinds of personal and political agendas use it fairly effectively. And yet we see how the internet has polarized our country, politically. How it is used to distort reality, or impose perhaps a reality that we pretended or did not know existed. All of these things to me are mixed blessings, really.Cohen senses danger. I think we are well advised to watch these developments carefully. The world seems busier and weirder all the time. It's possible, that in some yet unfulfilled way, Cohen is sounding a warning that we ignore at our peril.

This book is well researched and very interesting and good.I got a lot out of it, and will read it again there is so much in it.

The stories about the persons mentioned in this book were fascinating and frightening at the same time

The book’s central tenet (revealed in its title) is accurate and well supported. The long detour on the early history of computer science and early AI thought leaders is a slog, however. And chapters organized around individuals slows and confuses the development of the arguments. A long form Times article would have been a better form. And lose the footnotes. We believe you.

So Silicon Valley moguls are essentially all privileged white male superegos, living the life of racism, sexism and ageism, and of course, obscene wealth. This is not news, but Noam Cohen has put together an alternate history of the computer era, bent at this angle. It makes for uncomfortable reading, meaning, it’s effective. The main locus is Stanford University, which turned itself into an industry-promoting school in the 1930s as a way of differentiating itself. It began with Hewlett-Packard, which paid off big for the university, and it has never looked back. Venture capitalists prowl the campus, hiring students, handing out checks for ideas and helping with business plans for a large piece of the action. Students quit early to go into well-funded startups. The school takes only the highest scorers, because that’s all that matters. Interviews are based on intelligence quizzes and games, not personalities or values. And the old boys’ network means once you’re in, the offers keep coming. For life. (Everyone else is over the hill by age 32).The chapters are biographies, showing the growth of greed and power and arrogance of each person. A couple of them are really quite revolting, but probably no more so than in any group of people. What Cohen posits they have in common is that their money and power make them know-it-alls, with outsized influence and voices. They try to make up for it with ill-conceived plans like Zuckerberg’s misguided donation to education in Newark, or Gates’ donations to eradicate polio – at the expense of progress against anything else. They see themselves at the front of the line because of their money, so what they say goes. Then they can spout crackpot concepts like you are your own startup of one, and the poor will be uplifted if only they had access to facebook, and India was better off as a British colony. They fling their wisdom without concern, because their success makes them right. It is not a pleasant scenario.Cohen thinks people should be uplifted by people, by actual contact and relations, and that government’s purpose is to facilitate, promote and enable such qualities of life. The moguls often felt the same way - until the first check came in.David Wineberg

I just received the book today and after a first pass-through, I really like it, and I think that it will become the standard reference on Schneider Trophy aircraft, both the ones that flew and the ones that didn't.I particularly enjoy the fact that minor variations, either of different aircraft of the same model, or of the same aircraft at different times, all merited individual three-view drawings. All of these drawings are identified as to date, location, pilot (if applicable) and race number (ditto). Some drawings are more detailed than others, but that is a function of the available source material, and in fact the author provides an appendix showing all the source materials used to create each drawing, with subjective ratings given as to the reliability of the source materials. There are also additional cutaway three-views of many of the later aircraft. Particularly nice is a comparison of the floats on the S.6, S.6A and S.6B.I also like the fact that there are course maps provided for each race, and usually a reproduction of each one's official poster. There aren't too many photos, but with all of the drawings that is not, to me, a big deal. It appears that every aircraft that was ever intended for Schneider appearances is shown, including many that I was unfamiliar with, especially in the 1931-and-later period. The book has a pretty good-looking bibliography and index, and the production values seem very good to me. If you have any interest in the technology of the Schneider Trophy era, I think that you need this book. (I should point out that I have been an airframe design engineer for 35 years, so I appreciate books like this!)

Two criticisms with this volume. Not enough photographs of the airframes and engines and I would have liked more text on engine development.Other than that? This is undoubtedly the seminal single volume history of the Schneider Cup. Each year gets coverage of the aircraft, personalities and circumstances that drove the developments for that year. Each chapter includes obligatory information about the race course, weather, and controversies that may have arose as well. There are plenty of three views of the both the built and the proposed airframes as well. The only possible companion volume to this book might be "Race with the Wind: How Air Racing Advanced Aviation" by Birch Matthews for information on the technical side. This is not a "quick read" book. It's in-depth and aggressive in scope. . Recommended without hesitation for anyone with an interest in in the golden age of air-racing or aircraft developments. Modelers would be well advised to look else where.

I've researched the heck out of the Schneider Trophy and this book contains information I was unable to find anywhere else. I hesitated buying this book because of the price and now I wish I hadn't because I bought other less expensive books that did not contain the info I was looking for and this book contained it all so I could have saved myself time and money by buying it first. If you are interested in the Schneider Trophy this is the book for you.

Mr. Pegram has published one of the great books on the Schneider Trophy era. With great insight and research his book is a must own for anyone interested in the historic series and it's impact on aviation in general. Filled with information not found anywhere else and 3 view drawings of every aircraft built or planned to be built for the Schneider Trophy Races.

I have been fascinated with Schneider Trophy aircraft for almost as long as I can remember. The old Putnam and Hirsch books are longtime treasured members of my library, and I was really looking forward to Pegram's book as the "ultimate" Schneider Trophy aircraft reference, but alas, it falls slightly short. The physical attributes of the book are exemplary. It is attractive, well laid out, and appears to be printed on good quality paper and very well bound. Though I have not read the entire text, it appears that Mr. Pegram is a very knowledgeable and capable writer on this subject. The 3 view drawings are outstanding, and they are indeed what makes this book special. I am very happy to have this book in my collection, but...The only thing keeping this book from being the ultimate Schneider Trophy aircraft reference is the photos. They are few in number, and are so small and indifferently reproduced as to seem to be almost an afterthought. Even the relatively small number of photos would have been OK if they were larger and reproduced with more care. As it is, I will cherish this book primarily for its superlative drawings and text, but will look elsewhere for photos of these wonderful machines.

The most detailed book on the Schneider trophy era that I have read, reflecting 30 years of research by the author. Many pictures with superior scale drawings. A must have book for aviation historians!!

I was excited when I discovered that this book was planned. There hasn't been one on the Schneider trophy for many years, and it promised much.On balance, it delivers, but only just. Without doubt the success of the book comes from the superb general arrangement drawings created by author Ralph Pegram. These alone make the book worth buying. Every aircraft, including those little more than gleams in their designers' eyes, is included, something not done before in any book on this the most prestigious of all early-aviation contests. And Pegram does a good job of qualifying his sources, noting carefully in the books appendices which drawings are taken from detail manufacturers' material, and which are educated guesses.Where the book falls down is in its sub-editing. Spelling and style are inconsistent throughout, which after a while becomes tedious. Attention to detail also various in the text. Once example is my own book, which Pegram refers to by a title that is simply incorrect in the bibliography. So for any aviation or Schneider Trophy enthusiast, this remains a must-buy book, but one that, like many of the aircraft featured in the Schneider Trophy story itself, isn't quite the success hoped for.

With my husband and I having experienced a sort of free-fall of disaster, despite the efforts of well-made plans, I sought counsel in redefining our lives. I found it here, and shared my readings with my husband. There is always a solid, underlying biblical message, but it is applied in such a way that we, as 21st century people, can relate. A year later, we are coming out of this difficulty, but I still often refer to the book. As Jeff Manion writes, you can read a thought-provoking book, but it is not until you are in the pain of transition that you transform permanently. The book provides an excellent guide. I believe the insights apply to those who are more open and spiritual, as well as those who are specifically Bible-based. If you feel that you need change as you are marking time in the metaphorical (or real) desert, this book will help clear your vision and offer perspective.

When you're caught between what once was and what now is you're in the land between. In our case it was sudden and unexpected. Time seemed to come to a near standstill and even breathing seemed to require effort and thought. My husband and I studied the book of Job. Not what might be high on the 'to do list' in the middle of being thrust into having most every aspect of your life turned upside down. But, we felt God leading us to study Job and we feel through it God prepared us for what was yet to come by studying Job.We've dropped many cliches like, "Things can't get any worse." And, we aren't fond of hearing "How are you?" Because it's meant more as a greeting than truly concerned about how the person is doing. People expect the response to be "Good" or "I'm doing well" and typically not concerned about how you are doing. We were lying to answer it as people have come to expect. We resorted to, "We're hanging in there" because we felt making it through another minute, hour, day, etc. we truly were hanging in there. We've become mindful and that we mean it when we ask "How are you?"Nearly 6 months into our situation a friend gave us THE LAND BETWEEN. This friend had also been through so much in the past 3+ years. Some of it very similar to our situation, with much more besides. She is an example of perseverance and through it all growing in her faith. We are so thankful for her friendship and how she came along side us in our struggle and sharing this book with us.Our prayer is that God use us to help others as our friend helped for us. If, God places others in our path to help we will give them a copy of THE LAND BETWEEN and walk with them on their journey.Jeff Manion does an amazing job guiding the reader through the story of the Isrealite's journey and how that relates to each of us today as we journey through life. Truly, God used Jeff Manion to deliver this lesson to each of us seeking to understand God in life's journey and life's difficult situations.

I've been in a place of transition for a few years now, so I could definitely appreciate the subject. Still, haven't we all heard about the Exodus as an illustration for our lives and heard these difficult times called being in the wilderness? I didn't think I'd find much new.In one respect, I didn't. The author takes us through the Exodus and brings up key lessons along the way. Yet...there was something wonderful and new here. It wasn't just the usual points. One thing he'd did excellently was to intersperse the journey of the Israelites with modern stories of people in transition.I also appreciated how he emphasized that the wilderness can build our faith, but it can also destroy it. He talked about it being our choice. He also discussed the difference between complaining ABOUT God and complaining TO God, how it's okay to be honest about what we are going through as long as we are going to God to seek him in the midst of it.Another important point was made early on: "For the story to work its intended transformation in our lives, we need to see ourselves as prone to the same weaknesses, capable of the same failings, and tempted by the same sins. It is imperative to associate with the characters in the story even when they are misbehaving, rather than placing ourselves above them." (location 216) We can only learn if we are willing to face our own weaknesses and sin, not if we think ourselves above it.I definitely recommend this book.

When the Israelites escaped from slavery in Egypt and headed for the Promised Land, it took them a lot longer to get there than they had anticipated. Most people experience times in their lives where they get caught in the wilderness between what their lives used to be like and what they hope their lives might one day become. Jeff Manion has written this book about it.The author has himself spent plenty of time in "the land between", with the book relating the story of how his family was thrown into chaos when his mother was killed in a car accident, and then the story of how his church struggled through a difficult period when plans to build a proper church building were delayed for several years. The book is divided into five parts, labelled complaint, meltdown, provision, discipline and growth. Time spent in "the land between" can be an opportunity to grow closer to God or to grow further away from him; the author's advice is that you choose the former rather than the latter. In my view this book is likely to be helpful to Christians regardless of whether they are currently going through a difficult period, as everyone from time to time gets to visit "the land between".

I really enjoyed this book. Handling life difficulties when you are stuck in a "wilderness" is very inspiring. I started reading this book right after I broke my ankle and was waiting to go into surgery. It had been recommended by a pastor I heard some years ago. I found it refreshing. The author talks about life's difficulties without being all sugary sweet but also without being a Debbie downer. I really enjoyed it and it has helped me through this hard time in my life

Good concept, however very poorly designed. I guess some dates just didn’t seem as important to the designer being as the have certain dates cover with cartoons (hope you don’t have more then one friend or family member with any of those dates).. doesn’t make much sense. I wouldn’t recommend this product. And I wouldn’t purchase again.

I hated having to go through the calendar every year to put in all the birthdays, trying not to miss any. This is the solution. This is the calendar that you keep, just for keeping all the birthdays and other anniversaries on. It's not for daily events like "Soccer game 6:30" - just for annual things that are on the same date each year. This does not have the days of the week, nor a year; just the dates. If you put something like "Fred's birthday, born 1997" on March 20th, it stays there - and year after year, you'll see it there - this is not a calendar that becomes obsolete on Dec. 31st - it is, to borrow a gardening term, a "Perennial".Any big family needs one of these to keep track of all the cousins, nieces and nephews, and everybody. My only (minor) complaint - why is called "Mom's"? I'm the Dad in my family, and *I* bought this for our family use!

I LOVE the Sandra Boynton desk planner and have used it for years. This is the perfect birthday calendar, is easy to use, and compliments the planner perfectly!

Absolutely love this calendar this is second time I’ve ordered it my first one fell apart definitely would recommend to people easier to reference birthdays for each month it’s great Even anniversary’s.

I have used the same piece of poster board planner for birthdays, anniversaries, and other memorable family dates for 15 years. Never realized there was a "Birthday calendar" available. This is a wonderful tool and I think it would be great as a wedding gift so the new bride would know about "special" family dates.

Gave as a gift for my youngest daughter who has 10 children. I filled in all the family 'B'days & anniversaries for her for a jump start. She loved it.

Love how this is the birthday, special occasion calendar that NEVER has to come down and keeps me remembering family and friends' special days.

I like the size. The slick paper is difficult to write on.
