I bought this book thinking I was buying a book that was going to discuss a detailed modern scientific theory regarding the origins of the first life on Earth. However, after reading this book, I realized that it was not what I expected. "A Brief History of Creation" deals little with the science of abiogenesis, and focuses more on the history of the search for the origins of life. This was very interesting; it talked about the ancient beliefs of spontaneous generation all the way to the Miller/Urey experiment with a reducing atmosphere (without going too much the scientific details of their experiment, and focusing more on its context in scientific history). I was looking for a book that actually provides a theoretical framework based on modern discoveries on the most likely way life began, and this book just wasn't what I was looking for. Regardless, this was a very good book, and it was worth a read, especially if you are someone interested in scientific history. If you are like me, and want a book that is less historical and more scientific I would suggest "The Vital Question" by Nick Lane.

Excellent book on how humanity thought life was all about from early days till present. From religious points of view to modern science. Elusive in fundamental definition of what life really is, this book hones in on it's very essence. Wonderful book for the inquisitive. Highly recommended.

i am not a scientist. however, the book answered my question: when and how did life begin? i understand the point of the Book of Genesis.I think I understand the point of A Brief History....Well worth the investment. CMC

An interesting book. It is basically a history of Biology as seen from essentially one point of view, but that point of view enables the author to bring in most of the major personalities in biology. However I felt that too much time was spent on the really early speculations about the origin of life and not enough on the most recent information. For example, there is no discussion of the quantum evolution speculation, which I felt deserved at least mention.

A fascinating account of the search to understand how life began on earth. For people who are disappointed at the level of scientific illiteracy in America (a large proportion do not believe in evolution), this should seem to be a beacon of light. I bought six copies and distributed them to six teenagers hoping to influence their thinking. I encourage others to do the same.

Alessandra Pigni is a humanitarian psychologist with several years of experience in the Middle East. From Chapter 1: What is Burnout?

‘Burnout’ comes from causes other than simply working too hard: "There are teachers, social workers and clergy who work incredibly hard until they are eighty years old and never suffer ’burnout’ because they have an accurate view of human nature. They don’t overromanticize people, so they don’t feel the great psychological stress when people let them down."—Peter Senge, founding chair of the Society for Organizational Learning North America

Burnout is the result of a broken way of working: it’s not so much about "how much" we work, it’s about "how" we work, the quality of the relations, the care and humanity that permeates our workplaces. Misunderstood and misrepresented, burnout creeps up on us, leaving us exhausted, frustrated, disillusioned, uncaring, and cynical. You won’t find Burnout Syndrome in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the psychiatric bible. The omission makes sense: burnout is about existential suffering, some call it the result of a broken way of work, the outcome of a lifestyle where we forget about what is meaningful for us.

Those who burn out may be the sane ones, those whose humanity has not been lost. Burnout affects "normal" individuals—people with no major psychopathology. We are all at risk of burnout and in order to prevent it we have to address our broken way of working, of relating to each other and to ourselves…

While pervasive across the board, burnout is definitely the do–gooders’ syndrome. Most of those affected by burnout were once idealists, striving for meaningful work, engaged with their community or working internationally with the hope to make a difference. Burnout is not just too much work. Burnout creeps in when meaning is lost, when you no longer feel that what you do matters, when you experience a mismatch between what you believe in and what you are asked to do, or when there is a gap between what your organization preaches and what it actually does. Burnout is fuelled by a culture where there is no room for respect and appreciation, where emotions are an embarrassment. Understanding this is key to understanding the nature of burnout, to know how to prevent it and how to overcome it.

Music as a Voice for Feelings

This book looks at the link between music and feelings and highlights some of the aspects of this connection that may get taken for granted. For example:

In the musical Peter And The Wolf, melodies and instruments follow a child's development. The flute for innocence and the oboe for libido wrestle with other instruments to finally confront and separate from the tympani of parental projections.

Pauses between notes express the strong feelings and tragic events that take place throughout Otello, the opera.

In the musical West Side Story, three notes are used simultaneously in a way to express a tone of conflicted feelings. The song may serve as a a reminder of a tendency to reduce or split things into either/or positions as a result of stress and/or a challenge to tolerate ambiguity.

In Mozart's Piano Sonata in A Minor, K. 310, changing rhythms follow the pain of loss and mourning.

In the opera Lucia di Lammermoor regarding the shame behind narcissistic anger, "the musical tempo changes from larghetto (slow) to presto (very fast), which according to the conventions of bel canto style, denotes intensification of Lucia's affect."

Good but disappointing.

This was a disappointing artbook. The videogame Asura's Wrath is full of amazing art from the many talented artists at CyberConnect2; unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the artbook. While the great concept art (such as the amazing end chapter art from the game) is present, it's presented in the book in very small size, far too small for it to be truly appreciated. There are many character concept sketches and creator commentary, so there is still content to be had in this artbook, just not the best the game had to offer.

I am a Global Sourcing Manager, I really appreciated the pragmatical approach of Sourcing process in Magnus Carlsson's book.
This is definitely more than just another book on purchase or sourcing process, it is a toolbox that will help me in my job, to move my scope of responsabilities, to organize my priorities and to set up another strategy on my sourcing activities.
This book's phylosophy opened me new ways of thinking.
I recommend it to all buyers, from small to big companies if you want to developp your thinking and for sure to improve the competitiveness of your company.

Many books promise to show how to create value in a supply chain, yet they mostly feel to be lacking when push comes to shove. This book is different; it has a focussed look at reality, with actual experiences from IKEA. If there’s one company that seems to have optimised its supply chain very well, it is IKEA. Learn how to get a grip on your strategic sourcing and category management, amongst many other things.

The book looks at ways of improving the entire procurement process and creating a mutually beneficial environment for both purchaser and supplier alike. Of course, the purchaser will always want a bit better deal, yet there are ways in improving efficiencies and structures that offer benefit to both parties. It is a lot more than just cutting waste.

The author manages to cram a lot into a relatively small book, the contents of which are engaging, informative and incredibly more-ish. Whilst the book is aimed at the larger organisation, something that might be quite established and mature (with all the problems that can come with it), there is no reason why much of this book’s knowledge cannot be utilised or transformed into the operations of a smaller company. Not everything may be relevant, at the moment, yet there are still sufficient takeaway points to provide value.

It is a demanding book due to the sheer quantity of information on offer, sharing the knowledge of an industry professional that has been at the sharp end with a clear global leader who has transformed its own operations over time. It is a highly worthwhile read.

This is a book for those who should be doing things, although the academic need not be left out in the cold: there is an extensive range of notes and bibliographic references for deeper, additional reading. Although the reader may be kept fairly engaged and active consuming and contemplating the advice dispensed within the book as it is!

Important take-aways which will improve the maturity and results of any procurement organization

Strategic Sourcing and Category Management: Lessons Learned at IKEA by Magnus Carlsson (KoganPage, August 2015) is not a case study, although I didn’t need the note from the author in the introduction to know that. The author may have spent 25 years at IKEA, working in strategic sourcing, but this is less a story of one company and more the learnings gained by one professional over 2.5 decades in a competitive environment.

Like any other book I review or event I attend, my focus in reading this book was to cull out the important ideas: what are the few take aways that really stand out as unique? There are quite a few in this book, any of which will improve the maturity and results of your procurement organization. I think this book is fantastic – full of great new ideas and ways to implement them.

Category Management

The first question that might come to mind is ‘how does the author suggest we segment our spend or supply base to get the best results from category management?’ He advocates segmentation by manufacturing process – and yet he introduces the idea that the processes he is accustomed to are different than the ones most commonly seen. The steps in any process must be allowed to influence each other – not just downstream, but back and forth. This philosophy brings the entire process to life and pushes those managing it to emphasize agility and flexibility.

Several of the take-aways I detail below provide examples of where learning something or changing a requirement must be allowed to affect the trajectory of the project no matter how far through the process it is. That being said, Carlsson does not suggest that processes should be ‘loose’. In fact, he explains that the difference is in the details – the difference between mostly getting a process right and actually getting it right may be small in percentage of the total effort, but will be significant as a percentage of the results.

Influence v. Power

This is big – first of all, knowing the difference between the two and second of all being able to build and wield both.

Influence is like BATNA outside of a negotiation. You strengthen it by increasing your options. If a company (or individual) can create and define a reason for suppliers to give them something others can’t access, they have influence. Another way of looking at it is increasing control over one’s environment. It is important to note that volume of demand does not automatically create influence. This provides someone with the option to improve results without violating the popular collaboration paradigm.

While Influence incentivizes desired behavior by offering something of value in return, power makes it happen through leverage. There is more force to a power-based approach.

Market Diagnosis

Another critical idea. As Carlsson says, “locate the money.” Market diagnosis should be conducted early enough in a project that the findings can be allowed to shape the resulting sourcing efforts. Always look at the difference between what high margin/cost suppliers provide and what lower cost suppliers provide. High price suppliers have found a way to deliver value added services, and low cost suppliers have found a way to be efficient. The right answer is likely somewhere between the two, and there is something important to be learned from both.

If there aren’t enough viable alternatives in your project, re-engineer the offering to make them viable. Maybe your requirements are more the issue than what is available in the market. Understand the role that different cost types (fixed/variable/unit-based/overhead) as well as material vs. process costs have on the value created for your consumers. Start with cost calculations and then move to a value analysis which combines costs and consumer benefits.

One of the strangest pilgrimages ever

If you're old enough, you may remember the "Chuckles Bites the Dust" episode of the Mary Tyler Moore show, where a rogue elephant in a circus parade mistook Chuckles the Clown for a huge peanut and "shelled" him to death. His comrades at the TV station were heartbroken by the tragedy, but also could hardly suppress their laughter. "Aftermirth" dealt with those same mixed emotions that come from bizarre, freakish accidents where people are killed.

In the story, narrator Michael Larssen, whose wife was killed when lightning struck her nickel-titanium underwire bra, withdraws completely from the world. Only when he meets Elena, whose father was killed in a freakish industrial accident, does he begin to live again. On one of the strangest pilgrimages ever, they meet others who have lost loved ones in bizarre accidents, and they learn the startling secret to moving on with their lives.

I enjoyed "Aftermirth" very much. The storyline was quite original, and the characters - even the dead ones - were painted vividly enough to be real people. Kudos to Ms. Jordan for a very intriguing and entertaining story.

Hillary Jordan demonstrates yet again how little you REALLY know her as a writer...."Aftermirth" is unexpected, irreverent and super-smart, finding both humor and human connection in that most bleak of topics: death. A fantastic and thought-provoking read, by one of the best (and clearly most versatile) literary voices out there!

Alas, the sacrifices that some people make to take their genes out of the human gene pool. "Aftermath" tells the story not only of people who have contributed to their death by their own foolish actions but also of those who have met their ends through bizarre, albeit humorous, circumstances. While the story naturally has a morbid thread, its message goes well beyond death and bereavement. If anything, it shows that death can forge the beginning of new relationships - and, let's face it, that the means to the end can be pretty damn funny.

I simply cannot compliment the author and the narrator enough. Not only is it a-laugh-a-line funny, but the high-level ventriloquism Christopher uses adds a level of shine that outstrips almost any reading experience. Just wait until you hear and imagine Barry Trotter hit the redial button on his uncle's address book. There are also references to the top actors and actresses of the day, but that doesn't really impede this book's withstanding of the test of time.The book starts off simply, with Barry et al travelling to America to stop the latest Trotter film. Michael Gerber simply doesn't believe in the fourth wall, and this helps add to the comedic effect (case in point: Barry whines about the slow narration, keeping him on the stairs for several pages). I loved his parody of England's Sun newspaper (althought it was a case of TMI at one point).While this is certainly not for everyone, those who enjoy toilet humour and R-rated comedy will enjoy this book with a 99% probability ratio.

Barry Trotter is a 22-year-old slacker wizard who still lives at Hogwash Academy with his half-canine-brained friend Lon Measley. The future of Hogwash is in peril because of the glut of fans that are camping out there, thanks to the fact that Barry sold a map to the place (now, if Hogwash is enchanted, it's never quite explained how a map would help the "Muddles" find the place, but, never mind). They are sent on a mission to the United States (of course, engaging the help of the third member of this triumverate, Ermine Cringer) to stop the production of the Barry Trotter movie. Along the way, they attempt to find author J.G. Rollins, and finally Barry confronts his mortal enemy, Lord Valumart.This book has enough bodily function gags to make the Farrelly brothers proud (turns out, this is not by accident), plus some wicked parody and an underlying anti-commercialism theme (although whether the author is serious about this or it is just a comedic device, who knows?) There are places where the book drags a little, and not all the jokes work, but it is clever to the end, where a couple of twists make you wonder what you are reading after all. This may not be a book that 12-year-old Harry Potter devotees might appreciate, but for older fans and even non-fans of the series, it's an entertaining diversion while waiting for the fifth Potter book to hit the stores.

I will start off by declaring a few things. Yes, I have read the Harry Potter books. Yes, I do like them. Yes, I will read the rest of them. But no, I am not a fanatic fan who thinks Harry Potter is as good as it gets. You will find me in the middle of things.With that said, I will say I do not like this parody very much and I think I dislike it more whenever I think about it, and this is not caused by the fact that I am an obsessive Potter fan as I started off with saying. =) The book is very self-ironic which I think is a good thing (it often says things like "Nightmares can be extremelyinstructive (especially in cheesy books like this one"). There are jokes in this book I found amusing, and there are several names I'm sure I would find more amusing if I knew what they were a parody of. I fear I haven't paid enough attention when I read HP.But Gerber seems to spend one hell of a time joking about sex and bodily sounds and smells. Which reminds me, this is NOT a children's book. There are things in this book I do not find suitable for younger readers, heck, I wouldn't even find them suitable for my parents. =) Anyway, some of these jokes can be entertaining, others I just shake my head at.There is another thing I can't quite figure out about this book. I don't know if it takes itself seriously or not. This IS a parody, obviously, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's written badly on purpose. It IS written badly, let me emphasise that, and it gets stupid in several places, but I don't know if Gerber intended to. Sometimes I get the feeling Gerber tried to write the book as a *real* book, but unfortunately he failed. It even drags on at times, and I absolutely loathe the ending; I find it utterly ridiculous. Far too mushy, especially for a parody, in my humble opinion anyway.I do not exactly recommend this book. You can lead a happy life without even knowing this book existed, but I won't tell you *not* to read it either. It's not completely bad, even though I only gave it 2 stars and say several times I don't like it. =) I will point out though, that if you're a fanatic HP fan, then don't get all upset. JK Rowling is treated very nicely in this book. She's actually pictured as a very kind, helpful, and generous person, and also Barry is still the hero, despite his somewhat shady personality. He does, in some ways, save the day. This is a parody, not a book written to be mean.

I don't see how anyone could not like this book, only the most die-hard fans of Harry Potter who break-down at the thought of what they hold sacred being changed in any way would object to this series. Its clever jokes and ability to weave itself in and out of the original story is exceptionally well done. If you like this, go to youtube and watch the French and Saunders spoof on Harry Potter. I would recommend this book to people who liked Harry Potter, as well as to those who don't, it's that good!
