About the Author
A.A. Gill was born in Edinburgh in 1954 and studied at the Slade School of Art. He is the restaurant and television critic for the Sunday Times. He is the author of two novels, Sap Rising and Starcrossed, and two restaurant biographies, The Ivy Cookbook and Le Caprice. He lives in London.

Rich and famous

What a discovery. A. A. Gill is a remarkably stylish humorist. If you know him only through his sharp profiles and essays, this novel is an enjoyable introduction to a sharp, insightful writer. His observatoins on what it means to be rich and famous -- and how the rich and famous are most certianly NOT like the rest of us -- are witty, also right on the money.

Stick with the Articles

First of all, let me say I admire AA Gill. His writing skills are incomparable- when he does nonfiction. His vocabulary is breathtaking, fierce intelligence bites out through the words, and he is just the master of the cutting, sarcastic, insulting bon mot, or an equally beautiful and uplifting observation.

But for some reason, when he does fiction, it's like some other persona picks up the pen. Some of his other books have come across as being bad enough to have been done for a dare over drinks (or not, since he's sober now), with every kind of idiotic situation and sexual fantasy minced up and churned out as rapidly as possible. The book with the big dog was particularly inane.

This one is mildly readable, no great shakes, but no Great Danes (or whatever the hell that dog was) either- thank heavens. Not particularly worth seeking out, but nor is it one you have to grit your teeth til it's over with either.

Wonderfully acid, then sweet book from UK writer with scandalous reputation

Gill is the master of outrage, and this combination of romantic comedy and farce utterly delivers. It is acidic most of the way through, but Gill-the-Meanie turns out to be a softy as things wind on and what looks otherwise doomed has a happy ending.

Catalyst knows how to make quality Battletech Sci-Fi material and this Tech Readout is no exception. I like that the new mechs, vehicles, and battle armor are nicely spread out to almost every faction in the Inner Sphere. So if you really like a specific House, Clan, Periphery state, or the Republic you should not be disappointed. I also like how Catalyst made previously experimental weapons mainline weapons. For example: improved heavy gauss rifle, improved heavy lasers, X-pulse lasers, VSP (Variable Speed Pulse) lasers, streak lrms, ER flamer, TSEMP (Tight-Stream-Electro-Magnetic-Pulse), etc. I noticed that there is a large amount of Inner Sphere and Clan tech mixture in this book which at first I did not agree with, but now I think it's a good thing. My only complaint is that some of the artwork is MEH.If you haven't already check out the website Sarna. Each faction has there own technical readout for 3145 and there are a ton of awesome new units that were not included in this readout.Included in this Tech Readout:14 Battle Armor24 Vehicles52 Mechs (14 Omni Mechs)4 Aerospace Fighters6 Dropships and other Craft

TRO 3145 was again another $40 release, so I gulped and picked it up anyhow as I have been a player since Battledroids. This is not as good as 3075, however, the Units are certainly more enjoyable than those provided in 3085.However… BE WARNED… this book is not as thick as 3075 and 3085… as it has fallen prey to the $5 PDF faction based TRO Supplements… though those PDF’s are not as good as the previous ones from 3085 as much of the items from this TRO are repeated in them. With space being taken up by the Superheavy and Quad-Vee rules it served as “salt in the wound”, which we have not seen since 2750 and 3050 spent time on Inner Sphere Lost Tech and the arrival of Clan New Tech.I was also a little annoyed at their attempts to continue to conceal the sequestering of the Fortress Republic in the text though, as these TRO’s are supposed to be written in the future looking back at that time. I mean really guys… we are lucky to get most of our fellow players to read the supplements… much less read the novels to discover the answers. Otherwise, as you can imagine, this TRO is all Click-Tech aka Mech Warrior Dark Age (MWDA) into the “classic” Battletech universe.Regardless of that, I was thrilled with the introduction of the 3145 Superheavies from the Republic of the Sphere – as well as the rules to create your own!!! However, I was irritated that yet again the Word of Blake (WOB) 150ton Omega was excluded from the TRO. This would have been a perfect place for it to be duplicated, and cheapens the value of Jihad Final Reckoning to just be for that information.I was also intrigued by the Quad-Vee concept, which felt a lot like Dana Sterling’s Robotech Hovertank, or perhaps more like Dream Pod 9’s Gearkreig hybrids. They did take the time to provide the rules to make your own - however – they provided only a single example of this new Mecha / Vehicle hybrid.Anyhow… Tripods and Quad-Vee’s oh my!

Book is a great source of knowledge of the BT universe and I like the return to old layout with all the background info, variants and personalities. Artwork is generally good with only a few high school sketches. Need to put the new weapon & electronics info in the back like 3050. I like the colossal Mechs!!! just strange that they all have to be 3 legged, you would think a 4 legged mech could even go higher in tonnage. Looking for more info on the systems and background, truthfully just getting back into Battletech after a few years so the amount of data I am sorting through is mountain.

As a huge fan of Battletech, I enjoy reading the Tech readouts,, and this was no exception. The artwork is varied, but generally pretty high quality. While the book is not as large as 3085, it still contains a good number of vehicles. Another interesting fact is that many Inner sphere mechs now possess clan weapons as a default. While some do not like this mixing, it further helps to show how during the Inner Sphere and Clans are slowly merging back together into a new galactic-political soup.While this book provides some very good new vehicles, and helps to further explore the dark age, there are a few issues that I had with the book. First, while there are many mechs and tanks, there are limited power armor, infantry and other vehicles. So while the selection is pretty good, it again is not as impressive a selection as the 3085 Readout. Now my biggest issue comes from the text that accompanies each vehicle. First, just as in previous Tech Readouts it can be difficult to see which powers make use of a vehicle, as often only a single power, or in some cases only the company who manufactured it are mention. This can force a person who wants to play a pure force, to go to the master lists site to see if a vehicle was commonly used by that power. Second, and this was the biggest negative point, comes from a disparity between the writers and the actual stats of the vehicle. Now in the Dark Age Clan Wolf, House Liao, and House Kurita are in ascendance as major powers, while the Republic, House Davion and others are either stagnating or have been in decline. I expected this to be reflected in the text, however this was not the case. Most descriptions of the more powerful nations sing praise and laud over how great many of these nations new mechs are, when in fact a good portion are mediocre or average in their stats(with the exception of Wolf). In contrast most house Davion or Republic mechs are described in negative tones, or even go so far as to use that vehicles text to describe a victory of one that nations rivals over that vehicle. Most of these vehicles are described as disappointing or faulty to the point of being a mistake, but when one looks at the stats they find that they are very highly rated mechs and powerful by comparison(A great example is the new Black Knight variant). The effect is that it leaves the impression that either the writers or the person in charge of the book was playing favorites or holding a grudge, rather than trying to appeal to the entire battletech audience which is a very long lived audience, with a great deal of diversity.So all in all, it is a pretty good book, but the negative tone is what prevented me from giving it a complete 5 star rating.

About the Author
Daniel P. Friedman is Professor of Computer Science at Indiana University and is the author of many books published by the MIT Press, including The Little Schemer (fourth edition, 1995), The Seasoned Schemer (1995), A Little Java, A Few Patterns (1997), each of these coauthored with Matthias Felleisen, and The Reasoned Schemer (2005), coauthored with William E. Byrd and Oleg Kiselyov.

Matthias Felleisen is Trustee Professor of Computer Science at Northeastern University, recipient of the Karl V. Karlstrom Outstanding Educator Award, and co-author (with Daniel Friedman) of The Little Schemer and three other "Little" books published by the MIT Press.

...it's been obsoleted by its own fouth edition. No place on the listing for this book do I find a hint that this is the third edition of a book currently in its FOURTH edition. They renamed the book The Little Schemer for the fourth revision. Buy that book instead.

The best first book on programming in any language.

I gave an earlier edition of The Little LISPer a glowing review in Byte in 1980. It was then the best introductory book on programming, regardless of language, and I still haven't seen anything to compare with it.
The greatest strength of LISP is its firm base in the essentials of the mathematics of computability, including Goedel's recursive functions and Church's Lambda calculus. It uses a single data structure, the linked list, and a minimum of programming primitives, all with well-known mathematical properties. For those who don't know the mathematics, this base in simple concepts means that LISP is one of the easiest programming languages to understand, and at the same time one of the most powerful.
The greatest strength of Little LISPer is its easy and natural sequence of steps for introducing data types and structures (numeric, text, and Boolean atoms organized in lists and trees) along with the recursive programming structures that are natural for creating and processing them.
I have just ordered the third edition for my son who is learning programming (if he can get it away from me).

Got Come of Age promptly on July 3rd, and finished reading it just in time to interview the author, Stephen Jenkinson, for my podcast (A Worldview Apart). The book is incredible, and as good as Die Wise was I think this most recent offering far eclipses it. Jenkinson does indeed make a case for elderhood in a time of trouble, but if you expect him to write out his central theses in bland lettering like an academic or reporter might do, you will be left wanting. No, if you want to taste the core of his philosophy, you will have to work for it. Stephen has an astonishing mastery of the English language, and his etymological explorations add so much depth and richness to his philosophical meanderings. You will have to read, re-read, think on things for a bit, and re-read again. I suspect some will tire of this, but I adore this sort of writing, at least when the author tackles worthy subjects. And Jenkinson does indeed. Come of Age is not just a lament about the lack of elders in the Western world, it is also a forensic investigation of the roots of this outcome, one that follows an expansionist trail all the way back to the Roman Empire and perhaps even before. Ancestry, culture, monotheism, change, and even the emergence of white supremacy are touched on in due course, as are other topics. And the author approaches these with both a sense of wonder and humility that I find so refreshing in these days of fake news and alternative facts. I loved this book, and will certainly read it again.

Reading Jenkinson is not like anything else. Listening to him is the same. His answers are unhurried, thoughtful, even lyrical, and whatever the opposite of dumbed down is, they're that. I will often go back to a section I highlighted because it felt important but I couldn't quite follow, only to find every word finely crafted, his argument pure and clear. I don't know how he does it.He's one of those people who has wrestled truth to the ground and is able to write about it. His voice is important and his books ought to be required reading for all members of the human race who are working on being more human.

Jenkinson is a national treasure (well, I assume he is in Canada, where he lives, but I suppose we can claim him as a "North American Treasure". Deeply wise, funny and articulate, a great storyteller. This book won't appeal to everyone in our fast paced, highly distracted and dubiously motivated society, which Jenkinson explores in great detail, and provides alternative. His other recent book - DieWise - was also a must read, for those that find beauty in big questions and exploring the nature of a life well-lived.

Stephen Jenkinson is unlike any writer/philosopher I’ve ever read! He brilliant and lyrical prose draw me in and will not let me go. Sometimes I laugh out loud, sometimes I’m in tears. I’m learning through it all...may we all take the need to nurture and cultivate true elders again, our youth deserve no less and our future may very well depend on it!

Stephen often says that 'food makes hunger'. You forget you're hungry until the scent of food being cooked in the kitchen reaches your nostrils. And then it all comes at once. You'd gotten so caught up in whatever you were doing that you'd forgotten to eat. Or, you'd been eating the cotton candy, fast food diet of this culture and, while you forgot what real food was, your body did not. It remembered the moment it smelled it. I think many of us in this modern, dominant culture of North America, walk around with a deep 'elder hunger' but we don't recognize it as such until we meet someone willing to elder. And so, I believe that this book, a visitation of eldership itself, will make hunger. Stephen makes the case that waking up to this hunger and learning how to contend with it well might be one of the most needed things in this time and place we live in. Stephen offers no easy answers but instead, urges us to wonder: What is an elder? What is it that crafts an elder? Can one simply pronounce one's self to be an elder? What does an elder do? Is elder a noun (something you are) or a verb (something you do)? Where have the elders gone? Why did they go? Why aren't they appearing now at the time when the world needs them most? Why do we have more old people now than we've ever had and yet so few elders? How could it be that we've had a hundred years of books on personal growth, personal empowerment and leadership, a rapidly growing industry of therapists, 'shamans', healers and life coaches, more seminars and retreats than you could shake a stick at, and yet so few elders? What do we do with our hunger for them once it appears? How is it that the elder has become an archetype and no longer a part of the architecture? How has it come to pass that we are instructed to find our inner elder but there is no real-world, institution of elderhood? And, perhaps most importantly, what might it take to conjure the practice of elderhood into this world again? I look around me and see the hunger for convenience, efficiency, ease, freedom and 'more' but perhaps we might be better served to open the pages of this book and see if a certain relationship to this old, human hunger might help us conjure the food that the soul of our culture so desperately needs.

About the Author
Alonzo L. Hamby is Distinguished Professor of History Emeritus at Ohio University. He is the author of several books, including Beyond the New Deal: Harry S. Truman and American Liberalism, Man of the People: A Life of Harry S. Truman, and For the Survival of Democracy: Franklin Roosevelt and the World Crisis of the 1930s. Hamby also has received two National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships, a Harry S. Truman Library Institute Senior Fellowship, a Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars Fellowship, and the Ohio Academy of History Distinguished Service Award. Born in Missouri, Hamby graduated from Southeast Missouri State University and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Great One Volume Overview

This is a fine one-volume overview of FDR's fascinating life and career. Hamby is a master of compression and an excellent stylist. He explores details of Roosevelt's life and actions in an economical manner without sacrificing texture and complexity. His account of Roosevelt's time as assistant secretary of the navy is a good example, and his summary of Roosevelt's visit to the battlefront in Europe during WWI is masterful. Hamby marches us through the 1930s with fine details of the challenges of the New Deal and the social revolution it adumbrated, and his pace and narrative power only grow in the final section on WW II, weaving together the stories of FDR's personal and political circles with the details of how FDR seized the role of commander in chief in an unprecedented manner. Hamby doesn't lose sight of the influence on Roosevelt of his two political heroes, Wilson and Theodore Roosevelt, nor does he skip a good anecdote or fail to draw on the observations of those in Roosevelt's intimate circle, such as daughter Anna. It's rare to say of a work of history by a scholar that it's hard to put down, but it is.

FDR Was The New Deal

There is always a discussion about whether the New Deal worked or was a failure. Of course the mobilization of our economy before and during WWII is what really ended it. However the point the author makes more than once is that FDR WAS the New Deal. He was the face the public saw and more importantly heard on the radio during the Great Depression. The main theme Professor Hamby wants to get across is that the relief efforts were what sustained millions of American's during the period between 1933-1938, and that this more than anything else was what created the Roosevelt Coalition. Of course the NRA, AAA, WPA, PWA and the other alphabet soup agencies had a mixed record and some positive reforms that were lasting, but relief and Roosevelt's charisma may have been what really mattered in getting through the 1930s.

That a blue-blood patrician with a shockingly Eurocentric childhood (vacations in Europe and an education at Groton modeled on the English Public school system...think Tom Brown's School Days) would come to be the hero of millions of working class Americans seems almost impossible from the standpoint of 2015...but it happened. No matter how calculating and power-hungry FDR may have been by his second-term the author makes it clear that he cared about the Forgotten Man.

Highpoints: The failure of the some aspects of the "first New Deal" and the surprising success of the "second New Deal", FDR's overreach after the 1936 election, and the recession of 1937, partly because of FDR retreating from the relief efforts of 1933-35 because he was concerned about the national debt.

Professor Hamby is very objective and points out both the positive and negative traits of Roosevelt, particularly his political calculations and ability to put aside progressive idealism and recognize the political reality around him. FDR may have hated Tammany Hall and the political machine in New York City as a young progressive, but came to realize he would have to at least co-exist with them if he wanted to become President someday. Plus whatever else you can only admire a man who struck down with polio at the age of 39 decided never to give up.
The notes may intimidate a general reader and need not be referenced continually; however if something grabs your interest Hamby tells you exactly where to go to if you want to learn more about a particular part of FDR's life.

Excellent book about FDR

Man of Destiny is an amazing book. It isn't for the reluctant reader that's for sure. If you are a history fan and in particular FDR, this is a most informative book. It is very detailed and most worthy of being in any history collection. FDR was truly one of the most influential people in 20th century American history - and world history, too, for that matter. I was surprised as I read this book to learn the things I did about him. As I grow older, history does become more interesting to me. I am pleased that I got to read this book and share it with my spouse. I almost want to suggest that all of the present presidential candidates should read and perhaps learn from this book.
