Not what I thought I was getting.

I had waited years for this book to finally release. When I found it I decided to purchase the book at 38.00 for the paperback. When I got it I was very disappointed! The actual story was a small section of the book. I found it unnecessary to have the court papers to be included in the book. I had hoped that the story could give more insight to the characters and story of The Matrix. Since it wasn't what I thought it was going to be I ended up returning it to Amazon. I did take a hit on a restock fee but it was better than eating the whole cost of the book. My recommendation is to wait and buy the book second hand or borrow it from your library. In my opinion it is not worth the full book listing price.

Listen I don't know if this person influence the matrix. Apparently the law said she did. But this was perhaps the worst book (and im a frequent reader) I have EVER read. Take my word for it... The book starts with her embellishing herself and her credentials and a history of the novels creation. Then it goes into the legal battle. But thats basically the most interesting part of the book. The rest of the book is a horrible attempt at science fiction. I do commend the writer being influenced by the bible (sorry to bring religion into the review) but even the composition of the book is comical due to the arrangement of how the story is presented. Buy if your curious I suppose, but I'm telling you this book isnt worth a penny. Very short too/

A Classic

This book first came out in the 1930s and presents the prevailing methodology of artist's materials of that era. The book contains no illustrations and is meant to be read, not looked at. The information presented in this volume is both specific and broad, and certainly for the patient reader who takes time to study what it has to say, the book will yield much fruit. This volume contains a wealth of information and together with Ralph Mayer's "The Artist's Handbook" and Charles Eastlake's "Methods and Materials of Painting of the Great Schools and Masters" presents a comprehensive and thoughtful overview of traditional art materials and how these were handled during the past four centuries. I highly recommend it.

A very useful book. I like it more than "The Painter's Handbook" by Mark David Gottsegen. Max Doerner gives the artist insight into how the old masters prepared their canvases and the materials they used. "The Materials Of The Artist" is for the classically trained artist. For instance, he mentions the use of Champagne (or French) chalk as the best in the making of gesso. As for making paints he discusses the use of pigments, that although often toxic yield beautiful colors if prepared carefully.

Excellent but might not be the whole story

Max Doerner (1870-1939) taught at Academy of Fine Arts in Munich for 25+ years, and in his day an major expert on painting techniques. This book has played a major role in art history and research since the first day it was published. Do note the book was first published in 1934, and then translated from German, hence the writing style can be somewhat turbid. Perseverance pays with there being more information in here than you can shake a stick at.

My comment about being careful is a result of recent studies of old master paintings. The old masters would typically have a team of apprentices working alongside them, mixing paint, painting parts of the painting that the master was probably too bored to bother with (as well as good training for the apprentice) etc. The Master/Apprentice setup allowed for a continuous stream of knowledge being passed along the generations. However as oil paint technology advanced, in particular the ability to buy premixed paints off the shelf, the painter no longer needed a team of apprentices. He could pretty much get by on his own. Hence there was no longer anyone for the painter to pass on his knowledge to. This resulted in a considerable amount of technical knowledge being lost. (A good example is the recent theory promulgated by David Hockney that the old masters were able to paint such realistic paintings as they used rudimentary projection techniques to place a guide image on the canvas, overwhich they painted. No one knows if he is right or wrong).

From the 1800's on, technical experts such as Doerner and Charles Eastlake ("Methods and Materials of Painting") began to impart their wisdom on how the old master paintings were created. But the techniques thay had available were very rudimentary, more often than not being a case of the expert trying to reproduce a certain style and looking at the painting surface close up. The experts proferred their theories and techniques, often with much aplomb leaving no room for doubt. Unfortunately they were often quite off the mark - they could emulate a style somewhat but never 100%. There are too many variables involved even for a discerning eye. It has only been with recent advances in scientific analysis, usually chemistry based, that a truer understanding of the old master technique is finally being determined. Van Wettering's excellent "Rembrandt - the painter at work" book details the findings of extensive research carried out on a number of paintings considered to have been painted by Rembrandt. The book is 340 pages, and they still haven't got all the answers. But what they have done is to throw in to doubt the theories and techniques of the 19th/20th C experts.

There is a welter of information in this book, but if you are trying to perfectly replicate a certain old master painterly technique, and failing to do so, then be warned the experts might not be such experts afterall.

All said and done, I do recommend this book for the wealth of information it contains. Along with oil painting it addresses pastels, tempera and mural techniques. Even if you do take the techniques in here as verbatim for an old master then there is all likelihood that you'll create a great painting.

Stephen Thorn loses his girlfriend when she is snatched way while they are out in the countryside. He spends the next years trying to find and forging a career as a uncompromising writer of true crime novels and a celebrity.

His quest leads him to murder, kidnapping and other bloody acts. Unrequited love and double-crosses also feature as Stephen does not know who to trust – quite rightly, it seems.

Engaging and entertaining, this has simple black-and-white illustrations embellished with red for blood – plenty of that. A one-off – worth a look

An OK story of someone flipping out years after a tragic event. The story made a lot of what is supposed to be shocking turns but I thought were just illogical. It jumps places more than once to the point I thought I was missing pages of the book. I didn't care much for the art but I did like the stark coloring, mainly black and white with just some touches of red.

Brilliant...even for this century

This book is a brilliant analysis of a general practitioner in the 40s and 50s who worked in mental institutions. In the 40s, the general practice was to perform frontal lobotomies to correct mental instability. Dr. Ferguson was one of the few physicians who followed up on his patients and discovered that the lobotomies were not correcting the situation.

He became an alcoholic. Through the recovery process of his alcoholism, he decided to return to the area of psychophysiology, and learn ways around performing lobotomies.

He was one of the first to discover that several of his patients were having mental problems because of vitamin deficiencies. He was also one of the first to use a new product called Ritalin (by Ciba) to correct catatonia...and it worked.

It's because of pioneering men like Dr. Ferguson, that we have gone beyond the ice pick age of lobotomies, into the century of curing the mind through curing the body.

About the Author
Shari Harley started her career selling and facilitating programs for Dale Carnegie Training. She has also provided training for American Century Investments, led leadership development and succession planning for OppenheimerFunds, and taught leadership courses at the University of Denver. She's right! You can say MORE than you think, and in the right way!

Many of us think we are good at clearly communicating - or perhaps we deliberately avoid conflict - at home or at work. This book is chock full of healthy reminders, tips, suggestions and guidance on how to communicate - while finding the balance of knowing when to step back. Shari says "In the absence of knowledge, people fill in the gaps. Give more information than you think you need to give." Great reminder to not leave people guessing. Say what you want to say, be kind, follow-up, and stay tuned in. This is one solid example of the kinds of eye-opening and healthy reminders filled in this book to help anyone looking to create a happier work environment with the relationships we strive to create up, down, and across our organizations.

These lessons will make the workplace a happier place to be

In How to Say Anything to Anyone Shari Harley presents a Guide to Building Business Relationships That Really Work. Key concept: candor. Candor is making a commitment to talk about things as they happen, not 6 months after the fact. When candor's missing, gossip, tensions and secret agendas arise. Many of us remain passive against broken, indirect communication habits, hoping that things will miraculously improve? Unfortunately, that will not happen. It takes stills and effort to lead 360 degrees. Be the change you want to see in the world around you. How people work with you depends on the relationships you cultivate. So build trust and rapport, avoid gossiping, give and receive feedback in an orderly manner and without prejudice. Set relationship expectations, assume less and ask much more. What do your colleagues or boss expect? Will your approach be accepted? Take action on your ideas and feelings. It will make the workplace a happier place to stay and business relationships last longer.
Harley repeats her messages often, both in formulas, steps and crafted cases and real-life stories, which makes her guide boring at times. Nevertheless these lessons can't be practiced enough. From a simple `thank you' after receiving feedback, avoiding a cc: email culture to an intentional introduction in a new job.

Outstanding advice

As an employment lawyer, I counsel companies on a daily basis on how to communicate with their employees. This excellent book gives great, step by step advice on how to have a difficult conversation with an employee(her example, an employee with body odor, suggesting that the best lead off line is "I've noticed..." and then intro the behavoir. She understands the power of questions, including the these two questions that every manager must ask to retain employees:(1) "What are the three things that will keep you with this organziation?";(2) What is the one thing that would make you leave the organziation?" The book is peppered with these gems, and weighing in at a mere 168 pages, it is a true field guide for employment lawyers and human resources.

I would swear by Sum & Substance. Listening to other S&S CDs in the car has helped me a lot when it comes to studying for exams but these have got to be the worst. Marc Perlin is an amazing professor and he really knows his stuff but he has ABSOLUTELY NO PLACE IN DOING AUDIO CDs!!! I am really not poking fun at him, merely the product, but his speech impediment makes it nearly impossible to focus on the lectures. It's like he's constantly trying to teach with a mouthful of soup.

Great purchase. I bought this set in place of taking the actual class. It appears that I learned as much law from this set as I would have learned from taking the class. Additionally, there were areas that the cds covered that could not be fully fit into a standard 3 credit class. Best of all, I could listen to it as many times as I needed.

Citizens are slowly dealigning from these actors, and individual politicians are therefore growing in importance in elections, in government, within parties, and in media reporting of politics. A crucial question concerns how this new pattern could be restructuring politics over the long run - notably, whether the personalization of politics is changing the institutional architecture of contemporary democracies.

The authors show that the trend towards personalization is indeed changing core democratic institutions. Studying the evolution of electoral systems in thirty-one European democracies since 1945, they demonstrate that, since the 1990s, there has been a shift towards more personalized electoral systems. Electoral systems in most European countries now allow voters to express preferences for candidates, not just for political parties. And the weight of these voters' preferences in the allocation of seats has been increased in numerous countries.

They examine the factors that appear to be driving this evolution, finding that the personalization of electoral systems is associated with the growing gap between citizens and politics. Politicians and legislators appear to perceive the personalization of electoral systems as a way to address the democratic malaise and to restore trust in politics by reducing the role of political parties in elections. The book also shows, however, that whether these reforms have had any success in achieving their aims is far less clear.

About the Author

Alan Renwick is Deputy Director of the Constitution Unit in the Department of Political Science at University College London. He was previously Associate Professor of Comparative Politics at the University of Reading. His publications include The Politics of Electoral Reform: Changing the Rules of Democracy (Cambridge University Press, 2010) and A Citizen's Guide to Electoral Reform (Biteback, 2011). His research focuses primarily on processes of electoral and broader political reform and how these are changing over time.

Jean-Benoit Pilet is Professor of Political Science at the Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). He works on electoral systems, elections, institutional reforms and party politics. He has recently co-edited, with William Cross, The Politics of Party Leadership: a Cross-National Perspective (OUP, forthcoming) and is the author of several articles published in journals like Electoral Studies, Party Politics, European Journal of Political Research, West European Politics, Representation and Journal of Elections, and Public Opinion and Parties.

Influence through Storytelling

As the title indicates, this is a book about the power of storytelling as an influencing tool. As Annette best tells it: "People don't want more information. They are up to their eyeball in information. They want faith...Faith needs a story to sustain it - a meaningful story that inspires belief in you and renews hope that your ideas indeed offer what you promise...Story is your path to creating faith. Telling a meaningful story means inspiring your listeners...to reach the same conclusions you have reached and decide for themselves to believe what you say and do what you want them to do. People value their own conclusions more highly than yours. They will only have faith in a story that has become real for them personally. Once people make your story, their story, you have tapped into the powerful force of faith. Future influence will require very little follow-up energy from you and may even expand as people recall and retell your story to others."

The author then goes to summarize what the remainder of the book is about: "The rest of this book is dedicated to proving to you the things you already know about storytelling and filling in whatever gaps might be missing. Storytelling is not rocket science. It is very easy and incredibly rewarding to practice."

2- "Other methods of influence - persuasion, bribery, or charismatic appeals - are push strategies. Story is a pull strategy. If your story is good enough, people - of their own free will - come to the conclusion they can trust and the message you bring."

3- "People need story to organize their thoughts and make sense of things. In fact, anyone you attempt to influence already has a story...If you tell them a story that makes better sense to them you can reframe the way they organize their thoughts, the meanings they draw, and thus the actions they take."

4- "Policy can't adapt, but a story can give guidance, make sense, and without ruling on either side of an unresolvable conflict, invite someone to think through her own creative solution to a tough problem."

5- "A good story helps you influence the interpretation people give to facts. Facts aren't influential until they mean something to someone. A story delivers a context so that your facts slide into new slots in your listener's brains."

6- "However, if you tell sustaining, guiding stories like this one, people will feel empowered to stop asking you for answers and to think for themselves. An answer only gives them a fish, whereas a story teaches them how to fish for themselves."

10- "True influence changes behavior without relying on constant reminders. Any agreement that depends on policing future behavior is not addressing some force or dynamic still working against your desired goal."

11- "No builder would start building without first understanding the foundations of the terrain. Neither would a successful influencer build a new story without first understanding the old stories. Influence will require either a new foundation that can coexist with the old stories or excavation and removal of the old outdated stories."

12- "Storytelling tracks vital deviations that inspire growth - meaningful personal experiences, creative solutions to conflict, and paradoxial truths."

13- "After all, organizational values form behavior. Stories about your values in action create and sustain the organizational culture (for better or for worse). When you live the vision and values you profess, you need only tell people what happened last week or last moth. If you aren't living your vision and values daily, well, you can't dress a pig in a ball gown and expect people to call her princess. Story telling operates as a litmus test of accountability that simultaneously inspires and reminds us to stay true to our values."

Top 10!

I will put this on my list of top ten books on personal development. A how-to book on influencing others that begins with self-reflection and the integrity required to project authenticity and believability. This book is very well done, and I see how it earned its spot in the "100 Best Business Books of All Time."

Much like Michael Jeffreys (who wrote Success Secrets of the Motivational Superstars: America's Greatest Speakers Reveal Their Secrets) Annette Simmons is not a fan of technique. That is to say, she believes that only basic goodness, honesty, and strong character can produce influence. This book is not exactly a how-to book in the sense that it directs the reader on specific tips for becoming a better storyteller, but rather, encourages a new way of thinking - which is thinking non-linearly, from multiple perspectives, and away from facts.

As author Annette Simmons notes, "People don't want more information. They are up to their eyeballs in information. They want faith--faith in you, your goals, your success, in the story you tell."

Stories get past the rational, critical mind and mines deep down into our emotions at an unconscious level. A good story induces a state of trance whereby the critical conscious mind becomes engaged in the narrative, allowing the moral/meaning of the story to sink into the unconscious unchallenged. It then influences their perception, thoughts, feelings and behavior.

I've had friends tell me they think storytelling is a strength of mine. After reading The Story Factor, I hope they are right. I know what I have to do to improve, anyway... and that is always a good thing.

Be More Effective at Persuasion

If you've ever wondered why you have a hard time getting others to see your point of view, you may be using too many facts and not enough relevant stories. Annette Simmons explains why giving more facts will not only turn people off, but can hurt your chances for ever being able to influence them.

I had a major insight on page 50 when I read, "A subtle yet powerful shift occurs when you seek to influence people to make wise decisions rather than `right' decisions. When you decide to awaken sleeping wisdom rather than convince others you are right, you will produce a much more powerful experience for both of you."

Most of us have a cause we're concerned about and would like to see a better world for people, animals or the environment. Annette shares stories throughout the book that will get you thinking about personal stories you can share that will make a difference. When people are faced with too many facts and information (which most of us are) they'll become confused and cling to status quo. A story helps them draw out their inner wisdom and connect with Truth.

Whether it's to one person or many, if you're trying to influence the unwilling, unconcerned or unmotivated, the information in this book will help you achieve it with less effort and better results.
