Best Access book I have ever read

This is one of the most intelligent books I have ever read on understanding Access... As well as one of the clearest computer books I have ever read. And as software trainer, I have stopped reading quite a few. This book should be on the business bookshelf every public library because its a clear primer on Access and data analysis. I was hooked on the author's clear sense of purpose and desire to communicate within the first few pages. I bought the book on the spot in Barnes & Noble, even though I knew I could get it cheaper here. I sent additional copies from here as gifts to friends who I knew had long struggled with Access. I should clarify, this book is not about Microsoft Access, but about using Access as a tool to create meaningful analysis of your business data. The author's breakdown of business intelligence is worth the price of the book alone. I have not given many books a 5 star rating, but I give it here without reservation.

Be careful for a books with all reviews in "5 stars"

This book, Data Analysis with Microsoft Access 2010: From Simple Queries to Business Intelligence, provides a good description of user interface functionality available in Access 2010 with some discussions of business intelligence and data warehouse. The description/discussion is basic, the approach is simple, and the level is introductory.

Unfortunately, the book author did not provide any sample file for the examples discussed either for download or in an attached CD for most chapters until Chapter 15. (This book has 16 chapters and two appendices.) One value of having a book is organized information and this book does provide that, though at the very elementary level. This book provides quite a few simple queries as examples. They can serve as an introduction to get foot wet. Access Help does the same. To learn Access 2010 user interface as provided in this book, a user can press F1 key to search the help file and read the relevant information when using Access 2010.

This book is not for a reader who is serious in acquiring knowledge in Data Analysis and/or Business Intelligence.

In all, there are two small files available for download from [...]. These two files are "SalesDatabase.zip" and "DataWarehouse.zip."

The first zip file is a single table database (SalesDatabase.accdb) with a few additional files:
1. 1 table: GeographicSales (9 records and 3 fields)
2. 2 queries: SalesByState and UniqueRegions
3. 2 forms: MainMenu and SalesByState
4. 1 report: Sales By State
5. 1 macro: Instructions
After unzip, the size of this database is 520 KB.

This file is used as an example for Forms, Macros, and Reports. This book devoted 11 pages to discuss this file in its Appendix A.

The data warehouse database has
1. 16 tables and
2. 10 queries (2 for Append, 5 for Make Table, and 3 for report/analysis).

Chapter 15, The Data Warehouse, uses this database as its main example. This book also devoted 3 pages in its Appendix B to discuss this database, which briefly describes the process of how this database can be built. This database has 904 KB and is a vanilla database, e.g., just a collection of tables and queries, and no relationship between tables is defined.

I am not convinced that "this is the only book you'll need to gain a working knowledge of Access, and how it can be used for data analysis." This claim is misleading.

Informative & Easy to Follow

I picked up this book because I needed to buff up my MS Access skills for a job as a data collector. I've used Access in the past to do very simple data entry but this new position requried me to create, store, maintain and edit tables within Access. This book very clearly teaches you how to run the processes in easy to read step instructions.

It isn't very dry like others and makes for a great, informative read.

Its a graphic novel and has some parallels to the television show, which is quickly catching up to the comics. But the stories change up a bit so those who have read the comics or want to will get a slightly different story. Who dies is sometimes switched up for the tv show. In the comics Hershel dies and they cut off Dale's leg. Also Dale and Andrea get it on......so yeah. Enjoy the read. Those who have seen the show will understand the parallel switch-a-roo I just showed.

I got the kindle version and it was hard to read the larger panels on my small phone screen. It was perfectly fine on a larger tablet.If you are a fan of the show and haven't read this, I will warn you that there are substantial differences. It is as if a drunk person explained the plot of the comic books to the screenwriter in a loud bar, and them the screenwriter wrote the show from memory a month later. This is to say that the 'highlights' from the comics made it to the show, but it is still a different story.People are on here trying to review this with deep literary analysis techniques, as if this were Shakespear or Proust or something. This is a comic about zombies. There are many like it, but this is the best one.If you like the show, you will like the comics. I promise. They complement each other, but are different enough to warrant spending time on both.

I bought this after watching the first 7 seasons of the TV show (and being severely disappointed with it from about season 4 onward), and it’s GREAT. I’m so grateful that the TV show inspired me to check out the comic, because the comic is better in many ways—but also, it’s different enough from the TV show that it’s engaging even from the pure plot and character development perspective, since people and events diverge so frequently from what I expect from watching the series.I’ve ordered (but not yet received) the next two volumes of the compendia [shifts glasses up nose], based on how good this volume is. Already, there are so many things that are different from the series, that I’m on the edge of my seat just wondering how things can possibly turn out here.HUGE SPOILERS for those who don’t care about surprises but want to get a sense of how different the comic is from the series: So there’s no Daryl, Merle, or Beth; Sophia, Lori, and Dale live but Carol dies; Carol is a needy sex freak; Rick loses his right hand early on; Michonne shacks up with Tyreese, Andrea shacks up with Dale; they never use the term “walkers” but DO discuss terminology periodically; Glenn isn’t a virgin at the beginning.

I've purchased all volumes up to 22 and the TV show has just about caught up to wear I am in the novels. These books are friggen awesome. I don't read much and my buddy lent me VOL 1 after he knew I liked the show. Well, I burned through the first one and then just went on a tear buying 4 volumes at a time...the price is pretty good for what you get out of these. $9-$15 is the range I've paid per novel, I'm not sure why they aren't the same but anyways, I keep buying them none the less. The story was written before the TV Show and the show follows the story but there is some differences. The written story is more violent and graphic then the tv show but the tv show does a decent job of sticking with main ideas. I've noticed that certain plot things that happen in the book also happen in the show but there is a unique twist like a different character it happens to or something like that. Which makes reading these volumes great cuz I have some idea of where the story is going (after having watched all tv episodes) but there are still surprises. If you like the TV show and haven't read these, give it a try and you will get a whole new experience of the Walking Dead story. I'm putting this same review under every volume I've purchased (1-22) so people can see it. go buy these!

I can't wait til the hubby is done with these so I can actually read them. We are fanatic TWD watchers and I finally got a chance to check these off on his Christmas list!!! He isn't a very big reader , but oh my goodness he read through these so fast!! and the entire time I had to tell him to stop telling me parts cause I wanted to read them, he said that they are um a little more "informative" than the show, so I would say NSFK's, which im really happy that he read them first and we know not to hand them over, we even feel uncomfortable giving them to our 15yo. I got him books 1&2 and plan on working on getting him a set of 2 twice a year. I would suggest getting them after you've watched the show only because if you read them first you might be a little disappointed that some things don't happen in the show that happen in the book. But if reading after the watching the show it gives a little more depth to most of the scenes. overall im happy with my purchase and plan on getting more

I get excited every year they put another one of the Omnibuses out. The artwork is phenomenal, and the inclusion of additional covers, sketches, and other drawings at the end is a welcomed finish. It is a big heavy book, so definitely designed as a collector's item. Highly recommended.Update: anyone know if #7 is coming out? These have been perfectly timed in the past to come out around the holidays and this year, nothin.Update: I contacted a distributor and they said while they don't have an official release date for Omnibus 7, they estimated sometime in July/August 2017

NOT kusudama, NOT for beginners - Highly technical, assumes you know all traditional origami bases first (frog, balloon, etc.)

Extremely dry technical illustrations, no step-by-step instructions. This is an old, technical manual that assumes you are already an expert in normal and advanced origami, with a new cover that gives the impression it's going to give you step-by-step instructions. However, the first step in each project is actually a finished origami base, such as the "frog" base becomes the "crane." But far more complicated. My 12-yr-old has an engineering mind and folds origami and cuts kirigami at expert levels, but this non-kusudama guide left us both struggling. Fabulous book! If you understand basic origami instructions, this book is great. Don't buy the used copies though...I had to return mine as it came missing pages 2-18...not acceptable condition in my book, otherwise the book itself is great! :-)

I just finished reading "The Membership Economy" and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in starting a subscription/membership business or for anyone who already has a subscription/membership business and wants to grow it.The insights provided by Robbie Kellman Baxter about successful subscription / membership businesses and how to apply the principles, that have worked for them, to your business are extremely helpful.

Some books are about trends that are taking place in a particular sector. This book is about a much more fundamental shift. The fact that the title includes the word "economy" is very appropriate. We are experiencing a shift in the economy due to many factors as so well described in this book.The Membership Economy has certainly impacted my own thinking about how people's behavior is affecting how goods and services are bought, sold and shared. Leaders need to think differently about their companies as a result of this changing behavior. Functional areas in a company have very different roles in a membership economy vs. an ownership economy. This is a fundamental difference. In fact, it is a cultural shift.The book is filled with strategic advice and practical guides that can benefit any business today.

This is such a fascinating read! I very seldom leave book reviews, but I feel this book merits one. It is an extremely applicable and useful guide, as what is termed as "the membership economy" begins to transcend all sectors of the economy (from non-profit, to fitness, music, tech, and more). I highlighted and took so many notes while reading this book that I felt I had to go back to 5th grade and relearn how to efficaciously highlight–yet, so much content seemed important to retain and worth revisiting. You may have not even noticed the power this phenomenon leverages; yet I guarantee this book will open your eyes to many ways in which this skill is implemented, and hopefully allow you to adopt some of its advice.

Great overview for membership sites - a bit more broad than I was expecting - as I'm an information marketer working on building up an online membership site- this book covered membership sites from Airbnb to decade old non-profits. It does excite me that membership sites I am learning as an internet marketer can also be applied to massive tech startups - so these skills are transferable and desirable for all marketers of the future. Glad I heard her on the Chris Ducker podcast which inspired me to invest in this book.

Proust fans will be delighted with "Jean Santeuil"..

It's hard to imagine anyone who has not already read "Search for Lost Time" enjoying this book because it is very much a first draft version, in outlook and in execution. However, if you read and enjoyed "Search" there is every chance you will be delighted with "Jean Santeuil". There are countless delicious turns of phrase and insights which do not appear in the deservedly famous masterwork. Certainly, there are monotonous descriptions to contend with, but if you enjoy the idea of observing a major author honing his skills, you will probably read even these with delight. This early Proust certainly increased my appreciation and understanding of the later work. Highly recommended for those who read all the way to the end of "Search".

Enlightening for people who have already read Remembrance

This story really is its own work, not simply a skeleton for Remebrance. The depth of description is there, but not as consistently beautiful and insightful as Proust accomplished in his later writings. Interestingly, the feel of the book is more overtly homosexual than Remebrance, and the agonies of love and jealousy are missingly completely. This work can be enjoyed independently of Remembrance, as can his short stories which are more pointed.

If you want to read the great Proust, buy the Modern Library translation of IN SEARCH OF LOST TIME. This earlier work, unpublished in Proust's lifetime, is only for those who've read SEARCH and are interested in all things Proustian.

I am a fanatic of Proust, so for me and my ilk this is absolutely necessary reading.

one of the bests in college writing

it's a must-read. It's easy, well written, and fun to read, and covers all aspects of writing, from the start, critical reading, and critical thinking, to specific writing techniques. English is not my first language and i've been trying to read anything that can help me in academic writing, and this one has been the most useful as well as the most enjoyable so far.

Required text for my Eng class, but very well written.

English is my least favorite subject. I only took it because it is a requirement. This book, however, is well written. It has clear examples, some very beautifully written, and it is understandable on all levels. I was surprised that I enjoyed quite a bit of the writing. I never would have bought it on my own since I don't care much for the subject, but I am glad it was a required text so I could encounter it. I have to admit, It was an excellent source to improving my writing and understanding of the subject.

A different optical illusions book

Over the last decade or so there have been dozens and dozens of books and games which focus on optical illusions. I should know. I have written two books on the subject; produced two board games which are based on illusions; and, published six decks of playing cards each containing 55 different illusion images. Virtually all of the existing materials using illusions are basically collections of images. The text which accompanies them is usually descriptive intending to make the illusory effect more readily available to the reader assuming it is not readily apparent. They help the reader "see" the illusion. This book is "different." The author takes us into each image using a step by step easy to follow conversational tone which not only makes the illusory aspect of the image clear, but importantly and differently, makes us not only "see" the effect but understand "how" it was achieved! He then encourages the reader to go ahead and create his or her own special images. It is very well done.

Illusion drawing secrets revealed like never before!

As a published digital photo artist specializing in "Illusion Fusion", I am a big fan of optical illusions and have been purchasing books and calendars on the subject for many years from authors like Block, Seckel and now Ausbourne. Because optical illusions are compelling and entertaining in their own rite, most books on the subject (and there are a lot) tend to fall into two categories - creative picture/story books, or scientific explanations of how the mind's eye works. Ausbourne, a graphic artist himself, and publisher of arguably the first and longest running science web site on optical illusions, has taken a more unique approach with his first book. As the title suggests, this book shows how to understand and draw illusions from someone who has been creating illusion art for almost two decades. The book's illusions are beautifully rendered and printed in full color throughout the thirty-seven enlightening and easy to follow workshop projects. By dissecting the world's most popular illusions into their basic forms, Ausbourne was able to definitely explain the steps for creating my own illusions using a variety of media. I see these projects being a valuable source of inspiration for my own illusion creations for years to come. I give this book my highest illusion rating: Three thumbs up.

A fun way to understand how visual illusions work

I find optical illusions a fascinating subject, and this book plays right into my curiosity! In this book, there are examples of all types of visual illusions - impossible objects, distortion illusions, ambiguous illusions, and the like. What makes this book so great is the way the illusions are explained and the invitation to play with them to see how they work. Even when I demonstrated for myself how these illusions work using the easy hands-on projects in the book, I found it impossible to convince my eyes that they were being tricked! I found project after project in the book to be captivating and intriguing. This book is both informative and lots of fun! If you're interested in optical illusions, how your mind can be tricked, or just like to see how some puzzles work, this book will give you hours of satisfaction.
