I've long been a fan of R. Crumb's art and have been looking forward to Art & Beauty Magazine # 3. This book combines all three numbers into one hardcover volume. Those that only know R. Crumb from his comics are in for a treat. The subject matter is pure R. Crumb but the drawings are fine art. R. Crumb has a way of rendering portraits that combines the best of comic art and line drawing illustration. The book is beautifully done and it's great to have a hardcover version of all three editions of Art & Beauty Magazine. R. Crumb fans will not be disappointed and those unfamiliar with his art may become fans. Recommended!

You see R's view of the human form carries from the cartooning to real life. The book rounded out the artist in my mind.

Beautiful drawings of some very sexy women and girls.This book is less provocative than a lot of his other work,but still very enjoyable,My only complaint is I could have done without that drawing of the fat man with the tiny penis.

I was excited to read this book, but a lot of the information seemed like filler and for $30 I was expecting more. There are 95 topics covered within the book, but the information that I actually found to be useful could've been condensed down to probably 15 topics. Even though this is marketed as a book for the beginner/intermediate level, which is where I would place myself on a scale in terms of design experience, a lot of it just seemed to come down to common sense. There also seemed to be a lot of repetition on various topics and the advice on most things seemed to boil down to: use your best judgment.I was also disappointed by the use of color/visual examples within the book, as they seemed to be a bit outdated. I know this will probably come down to personal taste, but frankly, I found a lot of the visual examples and color combinations to be unattractive and uninspiring.Final verdict: I don't think it's worth $30, you could probably get a shorter, cheaper book on basic color theory and as the book suggests, use your best judgment on creating a suitable color palette for your design project. Also, this book seemed like it was geared more towards print designers so if you don't fall into that category, I definitely wouldn't recommend it.

Picking color palettes is my favorite part of the design process. Even though I have felt comfortable with my understanding of color theory, I want to be sure I’m keeping my skills sharp so I picked up this book. It was a great review and I honestly learned several new tips and tricks that I will be using in the future.

about the scanned-OCR-edition

I would like to write about the text of the paperback, not on the content: this is an edition of GeneralBooks who scanned the original book (that is available in pdf for the buyers - fortunately), passed it through OCR, and printed what came out. NO checking and NO formatting was done on the text. Even the exising formatting is often missing (footnotes follow mostly continously in the same row (!) the text of one-one page), titles may miss on the beginning of chapters, one part of the content disappeared (I am not even aware of OCR to do that!). Without the original scanned book, it is impossible to read. I wonder how much it would have added to the present price to just check for formatting and separating text from footnotes, nothing more. As it is now, I would not recommend it at all, but only to buy the pdf, and print it out at home. The present state of the book is simply inacceptable.

I found it a great deal less even handed than I would have expected

I found this book when as I was been exploring the filioque clause and things related to it. In short it was not what I was expecting. Probably the first half of the book, as he speaks about the undivided Church was helpful and covered lots of ground. For me the book fell apart somewhere between 1014 and 1054. I found it a great deal less even handed than I would have expected. I probably hadn't looked at the date of authorship till that point, and perhaps that accounts for some of it. What does become clear to a 21st century western mind is that the questions of primacy and power, hierarchy and council have been some of the worst features of Church life.

Not for the uninitiated

Pelikan is a challenge to read, because he allows the arguments of history to remain as complex as they were when they were raging.

But he does give a good feel for the spirit that formed the Orthodox Church as it exists today. It is treated objectively, and I suppose sympathetically. (I'm told he converted to Orthodoxy before he died).

Less complex discussions of Orthodoxy exist, especially Timothy Ware's books. There is also a very nice issue of Christian History magazine that gives a good overview.

This is the most serious discussion of Orthodox doctrine that I have seen.

Advanced work for serious players

I bought this book as an introduction to continuo on the lute. Unfortunately for me I am very much a novice player and most of the book is beyond my grasp. I do find some of the information helpful, and I hope that by continuing to play I will better understand the material in a few months, or years.

Since the mid-1980s, the presence of women in governance has become a major marker of successful democracy in global and national discourses on the democratization of society. A diverse set of nation-states have legislatively mandated gender quotas to ensure the presence of elected women representatives (EWRs) in various rungs of governance. Since 1993, the Indian state has legislated a massive program of democratization and decentralization. As a result, more than 1.5 million EWRs have taken office within the lower rungs of governance or the Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRI).

This book is an ethnography of the Indian state and its policy of legislated entry of women into political life. It argues that political participation of women is necessary to change the political practices in society, to make institutions more gender, class and caste representative, and to empower individual women to negotiate both formal and informal institutions. Its locus is the everyday life contexts of EWRs in the southern Indian state of Karnataka who negotiate their own meanings of politics, state, society, empowerment and political subjectivity. Analysing three factors – structural boundaries, sociocultural divisions and conjunctural limitations imposed on the participation of EWRs by political parties – the book demonstrates that the social embeddedness of PRIs within everyday practices and social relations of identity and power severely constrain and shape the political participation and empowerment of EWRs.

Providing a valuable insight into contemporary state and feminist praxis in India, this book will be of interest to scholars of grass-roots democracy, gender studies and Asian politics.
