Prodded along by her questions, the tarantula describes his frightening encounter with a girl who scooped him up into an empty glass jar. He was so threatened by her presence that he leaned back on his hind legs, opened his fangs, and rubbed off a few of his hairs to fling at her. Eventually, Harry was released in her backyard where he met several female tarantulas that were ready to accept his romantic intentions. Throughout the interview, Harry reveals much about himself and his lifestyle, including his favorite foods, whether his bite is poisonous or not, and why he sheds his skin. Drescher's scratchy cartoon drawings add life and a touch of comedy to the story. Harry's expressive face, with its eight eyes and mouth full of teeth, is never scary or terrifying. Additional facts about tarantulas are included. An imaginative, engaging, and instructive book.

Informative AND Cute

Through interview format this book presents great insight into the life of tarantula. This book provides children with a delightful journey through some nonfiction; this is something children need more of. With all the nonfiction reading children have to do in upper grades, I try to expose them to as much of it as I can. This book shows children that nonfiction does not have to be dry and boring. I learned a lot about tarantulas through this book; they were creatures I never thought much about before. This text helps to make them seem less "creepy" to children. My students love this book and a few of them like to take the book aside and play the parts of tarantula and interviewer.

VERY inappropriate for my 5 year old to bring this home from school and have me read out loud to him. ' I have to transfer my web sack of sperm to her. i must be very careful and tap her in all the right places. tapping puts her in a romantic mood. then i transfer my sac and im out of there in a flash, so far so good. i can thank my lucky stars"- NOT OK

My daughter (5 yo) and son (2 yo) love this book

My daughter (5 yo) and son (2 yo) love this book. She checked it out from the library and I came here to buy her a copy. I was really surprised to find such poor reviews of the book. It seems like many object to teaching your children about reproduction using factual language like sperm. I actually disliked that page because it mentioned romance! Talk about personification. But there is plenty of that in children's books like bugs don't talk either!
Children should learn how the world works. How bugs reproduce is an excellent introduction to the topic. You can use this as an easy introduction to the sperm and the egg.
The story is an interview of Harry the tarantula and gives children a great view of life from the tarantula's perspective. I learned about how tarantulas protect themselves from predators.
