I was excited to read this book, but a lot of the information seemed like filler and for $30 I was expecting more. There are 95 topics covered within the book, but the information that I actually found to be useful could've been condensed down to probably 15 topics. Even though this is marketed as a book for the beginner/intermediate level, which is where I would place myself on a scale in terms of design experience, a lot of it just seemed to come down to common sense. There also seemed to be a lot of repetition on various topics and the advice on most things seemed to boil down to: use your best judgment.I was also disappointed by the use of color/visual examples within the book, as they seemed to be a bit outdated. I know this will probably come down to personal taste, but frankly, I found a lot of the visual examples and color combinations to be unattractive and uninspiring.Final verdict: I don't think it's worth $30, you could probably get a shorter, cheaper book on basic color theory and as the book suggests, use your best judgment on creating a suitable color palette for your design project. Also, this book seemed like it was geared more towards print designers so if you don't fall into that category, I definitely wouldn't recommend it.
Picking color palettes is my favorite part of the design process. Even though I have felt comfortable with my understanding of color theory, I want to be sure I’m keeping my skills sharp so I picked up this book. It was a great review and I honestly learned several new tips and tricks that I will be using in the future.
Great books, the binding will come undone with use and pages fall out.
